Dodds as Big 12 Commish?
Just saw the teaser on rivals that Weiberg stepped down from his post to join Big Ten. One of early mentions to replace him is Deloss Dodds. What is the chance of this happening? If so, what does that mean to Texas athletics?
I know a lot of people that don't necessarily think that highly of Dodds, but I say the man responsible for bringing in Mack, Barnes and Augie is worth something.

Who's down on Dodds?
He got it right with Mack Brown over Gary Barnett, made a surprisingly good hire in Rick Barnes, and transitioned over to the Augie era very nicely.
Dodds isn't without mistakes, but his overall body of work has been very good for the university.
As for whether he takes this job, I have no idea. I thought there were murmurs of retirement sometime soon, but I may be misremembering.

Down on Dodds
Some friends of mine are still mad at him about Mackovic, the handling of the Penders situation, the reluctance to open up lower-level seating at the Drum to students, the additional requests for dollars through the Longhorn Foundation, etc.
Meanwhile, I happen to agree with you that his overall work has been quite impressive, especially lately. While I wouldn't blame him for retiring and happen to think he would be a good fit for the Big 12 Commish job, I'm hoping a few things get mopped up before he packs his bags.
For instance, how much longer is Augie going to coach? I'd like to see some of the renovations that are still going on get finished. I'm also fearful that if he leaves (for retirement or the Big 12) that it would cause some ripple effect throughout our coaching ranks.
Since I have no idea what the report said, I might very well be questioning things that are in no danger whatsoever. So, does anyone have insight into the actual report? Does anyone share my concerns about what happens if he does leave?

Not really....
He got it right with Mack Brown over Gary Barnett,
Actually no. Tom Hicks flew DeLoss to a Chicago suburb airport where they met with Barnett. They offered the position to Barnett and called DKR to let him know (as a member of the "search committee") of the hire. After the debacle of John Mackovic, both DKR and Doug English refused to be silent and refused to endorse the hire. They let him know they were on their way to interview the next HC of the Longhorns, Mack Brown, and they hoped Hicks & DeLoss could join them. They told Barnett, "tough titty" and climbed on board the plane. Next time you see DKR or Doug, be sure to thank them!
DeLoss has done a better job as of late.
I'm pretty sure Nebraska & OU will have a LOT to say about the idea of hiring DeLoss, aka it won't happen.

If true, that's interesting
I often rib my father, 'cause he was going nuts that Dodds didn't get Barnett. He thought it was the biggest mistake, and that Dodds had elected to go for a "Good ole boy" instead of a good coach.
He hates that I remember that.

Same story I've heard too
as HornChamps.
Dodds doesn't get a flier for two decades worth of utter mediocrity. For 90% of his career he was a pitiful AD -- and should have been removed.
He just kept pulling the slot machine lever until he finally made some good hires.

Fascinating
I'm showing my age here with my view of Dodds, which makes for a fascinating study in contrast.
On the one hand, you've got a large swath of the population who suffered through some lean years under Dodds' direction.
On the other hand, Texas sports are at an unquestionably great place these days.
Two very, very different perspectives on the same situation.
The only thing I'll say is that I'm glad we're not at a point where we're still in such a drought that negativity and angst are the common denominators among our fan base.
Watching other traditional powers implode with negativity makes me appreciate the 2005 football title more than ever. Mack Brown and Deloss Dodds are both flawed, but damn, we got that title.
At least we're a relatively happy fanbase for now.

It will be interesting to see
who replaces Dodds upon retirement, because he has been there for a long time. Too long.
Mack would be one choice, but it wouldn't surprise me to see them go after someone young.

Chris Polonsky (sp)
It's widely speculated that she is in line for the job.

two words
Kansas.mafia.
If you ever get the time, do some research on Robert Heard's writings on Dodds.
Although I always thought it was amusing that a Baylor grad who bandwagoned onto texas was able to actually get people to pay to read his insights into the program, he was the undisputed leader of the charge against Dodds in the '80s and '90s.
As I recall, Dodds was a track coach & assistant AD at Kansas State before coming to texas. Now, as you'll remember, at that time, Kansas State had the worst football program in America, and was trolling the Big 8 basement in pretty much everything except men's basketball and track. They brought someone in from that environment to a football-crazed program like texas? You can see why he didn't exactly fit.
Add in the hiring of 'Kaiser' Bob in basketball, McWilliams and Mackovic in football, the Penders situation, the Gustafson situation, et al, and you can see why he was despised.
From the limited information I have, the only reason Dodds still has his job is b/c he knows where all the skeletons are buried in the athletic department. If you look at the results texas had in athletics in the mid to late '80s and through the ealry to mid '90s, you can easily see why there was a good case to fire him.

dodds
The people that talk poorly of Dodds do so mainly because of the tight-lipped, ultra-spin manner with which information always seems to get disseminated from the SID office.

That was then, this is now....
Dodds record sucked in the past but it has gotten better. Which is light years better than excellent in the past and bites the weinny now.
No matter what he has to get some credit for fostering an elite program that UT is now.
