Countdown To Football Season: 78 Days
Our daily countdown to the return of Texas football continues with yet another reason to love the fall in Austin.

If you're thinking to yourself, "That's Silvio Berlusconi throwing the hook 'em!" then you're half-right. He's clearly throwing the index and pinky up, like we do, but whereas in America the gesture was captured by Longhorn fans as their universal sign of awesometude, it turns out that in other parts of the world, the meaning is quite different.
I was vaguely aware of that, of course, but needed this Wiki entry to understand all its worldwide uses. So, there. Educational Friday. You learned something new today in the long slog through the offseason.

As he said, I am sure that is what they tell the administration, but they know exactly what they are doing.

in my anthropology class we discussed this, and the prof said that in italy(if Im not mistaken) it is an offensive sign(or something degrading of some sorts) and a bunch of ut kids were walking around rome pullin the hook em and they looked like idiots because they didn't understand the culture (anthropology rocks!)

The Sweedes thought..
the Bush twins were giving the Hail Satan sign in Bush's inagural parade.
I used to have an article pinned up above my office desk that read, "Bush twins are Satan worshippers?" -- with a picture of them giving the Hook'em.
Stick to beach volleyball and wooden shoes people.

sure you're not thinking of the Dutch?
in the realm of wooden shoes, that is.

Don't the Sweedes have clogs?
I live in an old Swedish neighborhood and they sell clogs at stores that look wooden.
They also drink Glog in the winter, which I would suggest staying away from. Warm yes. Good no.

They probably do
But when I think wooden shoes, I think Holland. It's not like either country was exactly rocking high-tech footwear until recently.

Most of Europe
it is offensive in some way.
In Italy it is saying you are a Cuckold; which means your wife is a cheating whore, which is explained in the article PB linked to.
Who need anthropology classes when you have wikipedia.

Hand signs
I was walking out of a meeting the other day and a woman there saw my badge lanyard and said, "Texas?!" I smiled and flashed her the Hook'Em Horns. She flashed back an inexplicable Shocker-like hand symbol and when I asked what she was doing, she was surprised I didn't know the U of H hand symbol. I responded, "There's a University of Houston?"

ever seen this?
The hand gesture is also used frequently and prominently in Gangsta Rap.
by abcdmetrius on Jun 15, 2007 2:23 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah
I thought that was weird. I have never seen it. Though I am admittedly not very gangsta'

Probably wrong,
but the picture looks photoshopped (fingers appear to be different color).
On another note, the cheerleader is cute. Keep that stuff coming.
by cliffaudit on Jun 15, 2007 2:41 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
it's not.
i remember seeing it live (it's from the 2006 NCAA tourney) and saying to myself, "did that cheerleader just give the shocker symbol?" and then reqinding the tivo to be sure. the next day, the mighty mjd had a post about it on his (sadly, now basically defunct) blog.
and yeah, she's hot. you can tell she totally into the shocker.

by Jason Mayer on Jun 15, 2007 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

but i would never put it past berlusconi to flash that hand sign at a formal event with other statesmen. tactful, he is not.

I'm not sure what it's like where you guys are, but the only people I know who up the shocker are the raised-truck, gelled-haired, Blinn-attending d-bags of America.
