What sort of ridiculousness is this, or am I way off for thinking this is a bit wierd/shortsighted?

I'm as baffled as you are...
Seems a little bit too early. Presumably just being done to create some buzz?
if you know the kid is a total stud
why not?
it isn't like he can sign a national letter of intent this year anyway
these are just commitments, not scholarship signings
there is plenty of time to yank the offer if a kid turns out to have peaked too early, or become a complete addict/headcase
