Enjoyable times in Gainesville

Billy Donovan informed the Magic and the University of Florida over the weekend that he had second thoughts about agreeing to be Orlando's head coach, but it's unclear whether the NBA team will let him go.

Orlando has a signed contract from Donovan and is making a decision as to whether to let him out of the five-year, $27.5 million deal that he signed on Friday, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Sunday.

Magic are stupid if they don't release him

Donovan realized he's not willing to coach at an NBA level. Why would the Magic want him to be the coach? There's plenty of coaches out there in the NBA, so why take a risk with this guy who can't even make up his mind? Rick Carlisle is available. Stan Van Gundy, possibly his brother, assistant coaches, etc. No need to keep this fraud.

What a puss....

You have to be a HUGE pussy to give up on a job 4 days after you've accepted it. That tells me that he's not made for the big leagues. I guess he wasn't willing to face egos tha were larger than his....word just in that Orlando has granted him a release from his contract....Donovan and Kobe must talk a lot....

I'm sort of a big deal, people know me

Not sure

that he's a fraud or a pussy, but you do have to wonder.

What kind of person makes a huge, life-changing decision without really sitting down and thinking about all the pros and cons before actually making the decision? Why did he only have the second thoughts after all of this went to press?

Either Donovan is not so good at basic life decisions, or when the Magic players heard about all this they called him up and told him that there was no way they were going to play for him.

So take that.

Senses

I just think he came to his senses and realized coaching in college is great.  Who wants the pressure of the NBA and the pros?  I know he probably shouldn't have taken the job but it is best he realized his mistake early and got out of it.

He has a chance to build something legendary at Florida.  Flip flopping makes him look really bad but I'm sure it will be only non-Gator fans with a problem on how he did it.  Florida realizes the have one of the top three coaches, if not the best, in America so they will forgive really quick.

No disagreement here

on the realities of his situation.

I just wonder how hard it would have been for him to spend a day or two imagining he had already taken the job, before signing the legally-binding contract.  You know, playing out the scenarios ahead of time, sort of like he must do before every game...

Oh well, maybe I'm assuming too much about what common sense should dictate...

So take that.

Maybe He was blinded

by the amount of zeros that was behind the 27.5 when they sent him the contract.

I do not know what is wrong with him.

I have NEVER backed out of a 27.5 million dollar contract in my life. It is one of those little rules I live by.

Maybe it was for the kids.....

I can definitely agree that coaching in college is great especially when you're dealing with young kids who want to learn...but...For me if I've won two national championships and I've placed my school on a plateau that only few have reached then I would leave on top. Pressure is always there and if you can conquer or just be competitive in the NBA then the job is yours to lose. Going to the NBA is challenge that he should have taken just to measure his ability, if he fails there's no doubt that college will always be there for him. Build another program from the ground up...just my opinion.

Ironically,

It's probably the best move for BOTH sides. As sportsfan pointed out, Donovan has the chance to "build something legendary at Florida," potentially becoming the next Coach K. I believe among active coaches, only Coach K and Bobby Knight have more championships than Billy D's two. That two is also one more than the following coaches have: Rick Pitino, Tom Izzo, Roy Williams, Lute Olson and Jim Boeheim. A lot of great coaches have yet to win their first as well, such as our favorite, Rick Barnes, Bill Self, Ben Howland, Bob Huggins, etc. And the kicker is that Donovan is younger than all of them (note: admittedly, not 100% positive that this is true).

Meanwhile, Orlando's second choice is Stan Van Gundy, who I feel did a great job with Miami and a young Dwyane Wade. From all accounts, SVG wants to coach Orlando as well. As an NBA coach, he's already a better fit than Donovan in the short-term, and who's to say he's not a better long-term fit as well?

Careful...

Don't forget this guy or their fans may come-a-callin'. They don't like it when his name is not in the mix.

I know you are talking about active but...Just saying.

Orange and Blue Hue

has a great blog post about the whole situation.

On Monday morning, however, the NBA franchise released an official statement on their website which makes it sound as though this ordeal is far from over

Very interesting, though ultimately, there's no way Orlando would or should hang on to someone who doesn't want to coach them.

Absentee-owner Rich DeVos is not generally known as the nicest guy around, and considering he started Amway, the ultimate pyramid scheme, you can bet he’s a first class manipulator of people.

Just interestingly hilarious.

So where does that leave the Kid? Back at Florida — probably for life. (Insert huge cheer here.)

Agreed. And good for college basketball, SEC basketball, and the UF-UK rivalry.

some will say that Donovan’s reputation will take a hit. How that can be said with a straight face, I haven’t a clue.

Disagree. Until Billy D starts winning again, he will be questioned as to why he took such an unorthodox path back to coaching UF. Even Rick Pitino still gets questioned as to why he left UK to begin with, and he's taken Louisville back to the Final Four. Failure sticks. And despite Donovan's never coaching a game, he's "failed" at the NBA level. Even Orange and Blue Hue agrees.

Either way, Donovan’s second thoughts: have all but permanently closed the door on a future NBA career, assuming the Magic release Donovan.
