Depth Chart Projection: Offense, June

We'll do this once now, then again in July, with multiple discussions in August.

For now, my projected depth chart on offense, barring injuries, suspensions, and so on.

Discuss.

nice

so you're predicting no redshirt and some PT for Chiles, but Sherrod as the solid #2?  I can dig it.

The passing game should be outstanding with Sweed, Pittman, Cosby, and Finley out there.  I'm predicting a huge year for Quan.

by SelimSivad on Jun 7, 2007 3:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

My thought process is twofold:

(1) If you name Chiles the official backup, you gotta stick him with a clipboard in his hand on the sidelines. I think the coaches would rather have the freedom to use Chiles multi-dimensionally.

(2) Harris knows the system better. He's probably the "steadier" guy you want at official #2. That way Harris can focus on his role, Chiles can focus on being used in a variety of ways.

Just makes the most sense.

Fullback
I'm guessing Cobb and Tiemann.

The O-line and back-up QB are the only drama this season.

The defense is anyone's guess.

Defense tomorrow

As for fullback, I think you're right, though neither will be used prominently, I'm certain. This is going to be a wide open offense.

I'm positively thrilled about this year's O, provided the line is on the right side of average.

Tackle

Is there a clear-cut 4th option at Tackle?

I know the transfers hurt us, but having our starting Left Tackle as the back-up for our starting Right Tackle (and vice versa) does not seem optimal.

by Humdrum on Jun 7, 2007 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

Britt Mitchell - a redshirt freshman - is in the mix, though I haven't heard much about him in a while.

It's not a great situation, really. Webb's transfer really hurts - he was the guy who was closest to being "ready" to slide in, should Ulatoski or Hills falter or get hurt.

Remember, too, that Ulatoski wasn't great last year as a redshirt freshman. Tackle's a bitch of a position, and takes some time to develop into. We really need both Hills and Ulatoski to stay healthy, and to perform.

--PB--

by Peter Bean on Jun 7, 2007 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Damn

Can we slide a Guard over if necessary?
Do any of them have experience playing Tackle?

by Humdrum on Jun 7, 2007 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

question
why are ulatoski and hills backups for each other?  I mean, if one gets hurt and the plan is for the other to move over and take his spot, then it makes sense that one would be the backup for the other with allen as 3rd string.  but surely it doesn't go both ways, right?  just wondering if there's actually a plan for this.

anyway, another minor point.  i agree that griffin will be the starting center, but from what i've heard, burnette is a bigger talent.  we might be seeing more of him and less of griffin as the season goes on.

by billyzane on Jun 7, 2007 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

Well

On the first point, I'm really noting that if one guy goes down, the coaches will evaluate, first, whether to move the other tackle to the now vacant spot. For example, if the coaches think they want Tray Allen to slide in as the replacement for an injured Hills, they still might move Ulatoski to the left tackle slot before putting Allen in the (less critical) right tackle spot. Or vice versa. We don't know.

On the second point, Burnette is being groomed to take over as the starter at center in 2008, but it's Griffin's job to lose for his senior year. I wonder, even, if the coaches might use Burnette at guard some, should their be a need.

With Ullman...

a solid backup for Finley, any chance that Irby redshirts?

by jc25 on Jun 7, 2007 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

Depends

If Irby shows "ready now" ability when he arrives in Austin later this month, I don't know that the coaches won't see if he can't push Ullman for the #2 spot. Ullman's a decent enough backup at tight end, and he has one of the nicest Dads in the world (seriously), but if Finley were to get hurt (God forbid), the offense would take a big hit with Ullman in there. I think Irby gets a chance to prove himself, and if Finley gets hurt, you can forget about a redshirt.

JC tackle transfer?

They gotta add one or two tackles from junior college.  There are only 4 scholarship tackles on roster.

Are they thinking of it?

i haven't heard anything

but i know mack doesn't like juco players.  there's generally a reason they're in juco instead of at a university in the first place, and it's usually grades or behavior.  considering mack just turned down one of the top players in the state because of probable grade issues, I doubt he's beating down the door of jucos looking for transfers.

that being said, when 2 O-linemen transfer unexpectedly, who knows what's going to happen?  the real question is whether any of the guards can slide over if they have to.  if so, there's no need for an emergency stopgap from juco.  We can recruit OT like crazy in the coming year.  and who knows what happens to j'marcus webb.  maybe he gets his act together and comes back next year.  who knows.

LG

I'm not thrilled about either player (Tanner or Hall), but from reports I've read out of spring ball Tanner had the better spring, is the better athlete, and didn't have the (3?) false starts in the scrimage like Hall did. You may have read different reports, but personally I hope Tanner wins the job.

Idealy for me, if Griffin does win the starting center job, I might prefer that Burnett be moved to LG like Ketch mentioned in his recent article on OB.

by FBuck on Jun 7, 2007 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

Read the same thing

Hall had the nod over Tanner last year, so I'm going with that until fall workouts, but... I also agree that NEITHER player has impressed.

Bigger question: could Huey work into that rotation right away?

What is the story with Brett Mitchell?

I thought he was being moved to the o-line as a back-up.

For some reason I was thinking he would be that next tackle behind Hills.

Cats and dogs sleeping together.

by EYESofBEVO on Jun 7, 2007 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

so, basically, if either OT gets hurt, you're

screwed.

Looks to me like y'all need to pray for your tackle to stay healthy.

You have no clear-cut #2 TB, or an experienced backup at QB, so if one of your tackles goes down, necessitating a shuffle of your OL (read:weakening of the overall unit), you could be putting other thin positions at risk.

Add in the fact that McCoy is injury-prone, and Charles was gimpy in the Spring, and that isn't a pretty picture overall.

by Beergut on Jun 7, 2007 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

Injury Prone?

By that do you mean that he got hurt one time and then played when he wasn't healed fully?

by Bob LaBlog on Jun 7, 2007 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I mean

he got hurt, had two weeks to recover, came back, got hurt again and knocked out of the game.

McCoy is not a big guy, and his inability to take hits showed at the end of the season.

by Beergut on Jun 7, 2007 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Listen, Agro

What you mean is: "My thug Kellen Heard cheap shotted out your quarterback like the classless bitch that he is..."

Seriously, I'm surly tonight, so I'll make it plain and simple: When Stephen McGee learns to throw a forward pass, we'll talk.

Until then, you're stuck with Fran, stuck with a quarterback who couldn't hit the ocean with a football from the low tide line, and stuck beaming with pride that you beat the Longhorns because our quarterback was hurt.

And now that Robert Gates is gone, you're also stuck being the same backwards ass institution you were before he tried to breathe modern life into College Station.

Gig it?

Good Answer

A little surl never hurt anybody.

by Bob LaBlog on Jun 7, 2007 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

sounds like I hit a nerve

Stephen McGee: 194-313, 2295 yds, 12 TDs, 2 INTs

Yeah, he can't pass ::rolleyes::

Let me cut the tricep muscle in McCoy's throwing arm, and we'll see how he does next season.
Hell, your 'star' couldn't even average 200 yds passing/game when HEALTHY.

"you beat the Longhorns because our quarterback was hurt."

Is this how you justify the loss to yourself?

I'm sorry, when did McCoy start playing defense? We beat texas b/c your defense can't stop the run, and has no earthly idea how to defend the option.

McGee didn't need to pass the ball to beat you guys; he ran it well enough to ram it down your throats.

The hit on McCoy by Heard happened with 1:21 left in the 4th quarter. What is your excuse for the other 58 minutes 39 seconds he was playing like a flaming bag of shit?

Blaming the loss on McCoy would have a lot more substance if you hadn't also lost a game to Kansas State two weeks before, when your offense put up 42 points.

by Beergut on Jun 7, 2007 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

McCoy was injured

That's the reason he was playing like a flaming bag of shit.  Texas held aTm to 12 points, and you're blaming the loss on the longhorn defense?

You don't have to concede that Aggy was up against a gimp QB, but it was pretty clear to everyone else that he was, indeed, playing hurt.  UT's offense was awful, due primarily to McCoy's injury.

You are correct, you hit a nerve, pinched, if you will, just like your boy, K-Turd.

Savor the victory; that brings the all-time grand total up to 35 wins - 73 losses.

by Cyrus on Jun 8, 2007 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions

12 points isn't an offensive explosion, buddy

we lost to k-state because of the defense.  we lost to a&m because of the offense.  colt wasn't healthy yet and it showed.  despite all of that, we had a decent chance to win until the play on which heard got ejected for the cheap shot.

if texas really "can't stop the run, and has no earthly idea how to defend the option" then you probably should have scored more than 12 points, huh?

by billyzane on Jun 8, 2007 7:21 AM CDT up reply actions

need I remind you

our offense is coached by Fran?

Seeing a defensive weakness and exploiting it are not something Fran is always known for.

Regardless, coming into the game, texas allegedly had the #1 run defense in the nation.
A&M took the ball on their first offensive drive, and rammed it down their throats and took it in for a TD.
texas ended the day giving up over 200 yds rushing. Please explain to me how that is good defense?

by Beergut on Jun 8, 2007 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude

You scored 12 points. 12. Two more than 10. Less than 13.

We scored 7, with a wounded quarterback, and had a touchdown called back on the LAMEST offensive pass interference call I've ever seen.

You gained 200 yards on the ground, got bailed by the officials, and we played with an injured QB. And you won 12-7.

That's as good as you're gonna get.

And it's pathetic.

--PB--

by Peter Bean on Jun 8, 2007 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

you scored 7

against a Gary Darnell-coached defense.

Yeah, you're right, the refs were against you IN AUSTIN.

Dear God, does the "victim" mentality of texas fans ever end?

We scored 12 by running the ball against an allegedly strong run defense, and ignoring the glaring weakness of that defense, which is playing the passing game.
We matched the strength of our offense against the strength of your defense, and physically whipped you.
The only thing that matters is that 12 is more than 7, and it only takes 1 more than 7 to win. In case you've forgetten, winning the name of the game.

I just want A&M to show up

in a bowl game and quite getting stomped on.
It makes the BIG 12 look like a crap league -- and people from out of state see the "Texas" in A&M and assume there is a connection b/w the two programs.

Question, did McGee get pulled in the Holiday bowl for his inability to complete a pass in the 4th quarter (aside from the illegal forward pass) or did he get hurt?
