Gibson - NBA Finals Game 1
Another solid performance by Daniel Gibson. In 27 minutes, he scored 16 point from 7/9 shooting, 4 assists and 4 steals. Although 4 of his points came in the last minute when the game was already decided, he was once again Cavs most consistent offensive threat.
It's quite obvious to me that he should get more minutes and specially get more involved in the offense. He should take much more than 9 shots for the Cavs to have a chance against a superb Spurs team.
He was also alright on defense, he had 4 steals afterall. However, he did regularly got beat by Ginobli and Parker.

He's doing well
I hope he does well for the last three games of the series.
Hughes is an abomination...
I was completely off-base when I said Gibson might not have a good series (he's off to a good start), but I wasn't wrong when I said Mike Brown would hesitate playing him. He HAS to be playing more minutes, since he's the only other person Cleveland has who's willing to dribble-drive. According to Truehoop, he played only 12 minutes in the first-half. Excruciatingly, Mike Brown kept Larry Hughes in the game the majority of the time, despite the fact that Hughes can't shoot, drive, or play defense. It almost made me wish for some Eric Snow in my life, if only to contain Parker. And you can see Pop's wheels turning...he kept Parker in whenever Hughes was in the game, and once Gibson came in, Jacque Vaughn entered as well for "defensive purposes." Hughes should NOT be playing at all.
Meanwhile, LeBron was completely mishandled in this game, as he was getting the ball 17-20 feet from the basket each time, meaning he had to first get by Bowen (or Manu), straight into the heart of the defense where someone like Horry or Duncan was waiting for him. He either needs the ball at the top of the key bringing it straight into the paint, or in a post position, where he can use his strength or height over Bowen. Kudos to Mike Brown for not implementing this.
And as JVG pointed out multiple times during the broadcast, give Tony Parker some room on the court. His shot is positively pedestrian, so giving him the opportunity to dribble-drive is absolutely indefensible.
All in all, a horrendous coaching job by Mike Brown. I'm so angry after watching this "contest."
mike brown did make an adjustment
in the 2nd half, having gibson run the point in the half court in order to get lebron the ball in easier scoring position, which worked one or two times, but still wasn't really that effective. the problem is gibson just isn't that good at distributing the ball. he's a great shooter and has good penetration skills, but he's just not a good passer.
since the Cavs don't have a pure PG, the offense is best when lebron is handling the ball at the top of the key. the problem isn't that he's doing that to begin with. the problem is lebron is getting the ball at the top of the key and not doing anything for 6 seconds and then driving 5 feet before pulling up for a fadeaway. that's fine when he's hitting them, but he wasn't tonight so he's got to do something else. we just didn't see the same drive and finish as in game 5 or the drive and dish as in game 6.
i agree that hughes is useless though. i don't think gibson even got into the game until there were 3 minutes left in the first quarter, which is just bad personnel management. i mean, if hughes is hot, fine, but come on.... if you're not gonna play gibson, at least play snow. he can at least defend someone.
Agreed
Brown did a very poor job with Gibson. Gibson played just 12 minutes in the first 33 minutes. Then he left Gibson in for the final 15 minutes. Worst than that, he was not as involved in the offense as he should have been. The guy is close to 70% in playoff (my own guess), let him make more shots.
I also agree with billyzane that Gibson is not a good passer, but neighter are Hughes and Pavlovic. With only 27 minutes, Gibson also lead Cavs with 4 assists. Maybe Snow is a better passer than Gibson, but he didn't play at all (I think I saw him for a second in the first half).
Anyways, I'm almost sure that we'll see much more of Gibson in the rest of this series.
Cav's offense
That's an interesting subject. Cavs were successful in the forth quarter when Gibson was running the offense. As you said, he is not a great passer, but he's the best they got.
I think their offense will be best with Gibson and Snow as garuds and lebron in his real position of small forward. LeBron shouldn't pretend to be a gaurd. However they do need Pavlovic in defense, so, Gibson and Pavlovic is another good option.
The cav just don't have enough offense.
The Cavs need one or two more consistent scorers. The Spurs team defense is just to disciplined for the type of scorers the Cavs have. I agree with all these comments about the Cavs not having a true point guard. They need better passing to break down the Spurs defense. It seemed like maybe 12-15 possessions that the Cavs had, they ran they plays successfully and got a good shot. It's going to take a lot more than that to beat the Spurs.
If you contrast that with the Spurs offense they take there time and will run a play 2-3 times in a possession till they get in the right positions to score. Thats why they appear boring to alot of fans. They are methodical with each possession re-running a play until they get what they want. Plus it doesn't hurt to have two guards that both can pass and score in the paint and for variety they can have Duncan to score for the post.
I am also confused about Hughes and why he's playing so many minutes. It seems pretty obvious that Gibson is on his game and he is a much more complimentary player with James than Hughes. The Cavs offense has run better when Gibson brought the ball upcourt even though he's not the best PG.
You mean like...

Brown: No lineup change for Cavs
From AP:
Daniel Gibson has been Cleveland's leading scorer in the last two games. That's not good enough to get him a spot in the starting lineup.
Mike Brown is a genius!
Obviously, his creative genius mastermind holds no ends. This is sure a trap to spring Gibson onto the Spurs, heroes in a half shell-style.
Actually, it's not a bad thing, similar to Ginobili coming off the bench for the Spurs. Give Gibson some time to acclimate to the game, then put him in mid-first quarter to give the team a spark. If Gibson is playing well and not getting 35+ minutes, though...then Cleveland has a problem.
