LA Times: Vince just got lucky

Opened the paper this morning and started reading about all the unlucky things that have happened to the LA Area teams.  Apparently, Vince wasnt unstoppable in the Rose Bowl, he just got lucky.

Star-divide

USC held a 7-3 lead in its BCS title game against Texas when Longhorns quarterback Vince Young seemed to touch his knee down before throwing an option pitch that went for a touchdown. The play was screaming for a replay review, but on college football's biggest stage of the season, the replay-review system malfunctioned, depriving officials of the right play to review. The illegal touchdown stood, setting up Young's final scrapbook moment — fourth-and-five from the Trojans' eight, an obvious passing situation. USC plays it that way, looking for a pass that never comes, as Young pulls the ball down and sprints for the pylon for the winning score. Texas fans and the national media immediately declared Young "unstoppable," but here we saw it differently. Here we are aware of the truth. Here we know that twice in that big game, Young was nothing but awfully lucky.

Laughable, man! HA.  Sorry guys, we've been had.  Vince isnt really that good.  Back to earth.

Un-Bel-ievable

As a newcomer to So-Cal, I can't believe how much these people have hung onto that game. Longhorn sandals draw lots of interesting comments and conversations.

Just wanted to share

My letter to Ms. Daniels with yall:

To Christine Daniels:

I just want to make an attempt to settle this whole "Vince Young was down before pitching the ball in the 06 Rose Bowl" ordeal.  First, yes, his knee was down--there's absolutely no question to that.  The only question that remains is whether or not that had much impact on the game.  That's another no-brainier--a resolute NO.

"How is that," you might ask?  Simply, it wasn't the only gaffe made by officials that night.  Let's, for argument sake, say USC could've held Texas out of the endzone on that drive. It's probable Texas still would have gotten 3 points on a FG, instead they got 6 (missed PAT).  Fast-forward to USC's last drive of the 1st half.  Drew Kelson intercepted a pass intended for Reggie Bush that the refs ruled incomplete, however, if you review that part of the game, which you Cali people always tend to overlook because it doesn't fit your agenda, you'll notice that the ground caused the ball to come free after Kelson had clear possession.  The result, a free 3 points for USC just before halftime.

Now if you take away the 3 extra points Texas got on the option play, and also the 3 on the aforementioned FG, the game would have been 13-7 Texas at the half.  The actual score--16-10, still a 6 point difference.

Now please explain to me how USC got cheated, or should I just outline how they just plain cheated throughout the Reggie Bush era?  If you're going to point out missed calls by the officiating staff, point them all out, not just the ones that fit your point of view.

Sincerely,
James Dunn
Pampa, TX

Please let me know if there was anything I left out.  I actually wouldn't mind spamming the hell out of their inbox at the Times.

WOW....

he went off on that one...

good point..

i can't believe that people in LA are still talking about how the got "cheated" and about how if it wasn't for that ONE play, they would have gotten a "3-peat"  well, i got news for yah, USC, how can you get a 3-peat, if you never even got a back-to-back?

it's [check your watch] o'clock and ou still sucks....

freakin LA

why does she think Vince was lucky to score on 4th and 5? Any decently mobile QB scores (but probably not leinart). Vince looked through his receivers, tucked it and ran. What was lucky about it? That SC was still stupidly playing him to throw the ball? Anyone who saw Vince play knew he wouldn't throw that ball.

Two things...

1st, even cozying up to the idea that Texas would have lost if not for that lateral is as ludicrous as saying how Texas would have beat Ohio State had Pittman not fumbled the ball at the 1 in the first quarter.  The Bush Push and the mysterious pass interference call in the Ohio State - Miami NC game are examples of unfortunate calls that ultimately decided the game.

2nd, and most importantly, while Vince Young was the quarterback at Texas, when was any 4th down play an OBVIOUS PASSING PLAY??  Please, sounds like Daniels needs to turn the West coast down a bit and watch games outside of the Pac 10.

it's interesting that..

every athletic organization that gets a leg-up on a club from So-Cal is lucky.  But any So-Cal team's victory is due to them being superior.

I don't know whether to be

Outraged, or just laugh at this.

But I am leaning toward laughing.  I mean anyone who watched the game said the same thing- VY = Unstoppable.  And check the stats man, he had like a million yards of total offense.  It wasn't just 2 plays that people are applauding him for.

I will say this, if VY had not scored on 4th and 5, or even if our Defense had not stopped White on 4th and 1 and USC won the game .... I would have been able to say that Lendale was a beast, and Reggie Bush was amazing.

I might have poubted about Kelson's INT and not getting the call, but I would have been able to admit the greatness of the other team's stars, and accepted the fact that THAT is what made the difference.

Huh?

The illegal touchdown stood, setting up Young's final scrapbook moment

The only thing illegal in that game was Bush as an eligible NCAA player, those pet chihua Ting brothers on the juice and Frostee Rucker violating his parole by standing within 100 feet of the cheerleaders and underage minors.

"Lucky" is having your program avoid the NCAA death penalty, because nobody will talk -- and the free houses have been sold.

USC mentality

"I still think we're the better team, even though we just lost the game."

with regard to that play

It was a bad call, his knee was down.  But I agree that it didn't necessarily affect the outcome of the game.  The way VY was playing, it's very likely that he would have scored on the next series of downs.  (It would have been 1st and goal inside the 10 yard line).

If Texas had in fact taken more time off the clock on that drive, then USC may not have had time to kick the field goal right before halftime.  So reversing the call might have hurt USC - you never know.  It's not a guarantee that Vince still scores that TD during the next 3 plays, but they weren't able to stop him the whole game.

At any rate, suggesting that Texas won that game by getting lucky is just absurd.

what's great is
her undercurrent of bitterness at the accolades heaped upon VY: "The national media immediately declared Young unstoppable..."

As if we didn't sit through 2 freaking months of "USC = best team ever" on every media outlet on earth, with everybody from Skip Bayless to Jim Rome saying UT didn't have the speed to stay within 3 TDs of usc.

The sad part is, most SC fans that I know are cool and dont complain at all about the outcome; they took VY's performance for what it was.  Now they get heaped into the same pile as this chick

The Burning Question

What I want to know is: when USC plays UCLA which one is lucky?

Was UCLA lucky last year? Was USC lucky the previous year?  Blaming a loss on luck is stoopid.  I think it was Chuck Noll who said you make your own luck.
