How good can Sherrod Harris be?
And what is his role?
I like many others have been very excited about the future of Sherrod since his recruitment. And, with the recent flashes and comments I would say his hype level is steadily rising. I want to know what everyone thinks about what we can and will do with him and what his role will be this year.
It's incredibly hard to not get giddy about this guy. We've seen him run, he's 6'3 220 and appears to be quite strong. Also, it may be meaningless to most, but he did graduate from highschool with a 4.0 and scored 1310 on the SAT.
It may be over-hype but any QB that has around his ability and size will have an immediate flag on them at Texas for many years to come.

it's just too bad....
that he came in during the mccoy era, but let me not get too ahead of myself. if we can think of some packages for this athlete to have the ball in his hands at least 10 times a game then im all for it. we need to get creative, i know that my be a stretch too far but on anything can happen on any given saturday.

well...
he's awesome in NCAA 2008. :-)
I hope MB & GD stick to their stated plan and give him some reps in game situations early in the year.

excited
I can't wait to see the trickery GD employs with these kids. Between Sherrod and Chiles, the possibilities are endless.

I'm not being facetious...
But has Davis every been known to get creative? I can't think of any instances. Vince was a different story, because if the play fell apart, he was good enough to make something happen.

Yes we all know
everything that has ever been good during Davis' tenure is the players making up for him, and every thing wrong with the offense is Davis' fault.

remember when vince wasn't a very good qb?
and then davis fully installed the zone read spread formation that he developed to maximize every talent vince had for playmaking instead of just treating him as a dropback qb or a straight rollout qb (like ell roberson) and then vince became one of the greatest college football players ever and texas went undefeated from there on out and won a national championship?
yeah, that was great. i heard vince designed that offensive system.

to clarify
we all have our problems with greg davis. i get very mad at him on game days because of his play calling (which, from what i've heard, is based very little on what he sees on the field).
but there's a difference between being a creative play-caller and being a creative system-designer. and i think davis is the latter but not the former.

I see your point there.
But back to the original post to which I replied, I doubt Davis has any "trickery" up his sleeve. That's something I've yet to see. Making adjustments to Vince's abilities doesn't fall under trickery or creativity in my opinion. He just decided to call more plays that made Vince use his natural talents.
Oh, and Wells, for the love of god, do you have to suck Davis' cock every time someone criticism him? I'm not calling for him to be fired, or questioning his QB coaching skills. Just stating the fact that trick plays have not been a part of the playbook since he's arrived.

I have no problem with critizing Davis
I think that there are plenty of times when he deserves criticism.
I just have a problem when people have the mindset that everything that goes wrong with the offense is Davis' fault and every that is right is some kind of fluke made possible by great players making up for Davis' complete ineptitude.

Agree with billyzane
on GD being a good system-designer but not play-caller. I am still trying to figure out if we had a double reverse last year to go with the double reverse pass. I can understand the first two or maybe three times you run that DRP that the secondary would bite on the second reverse and think the trick play was over. After that, though, I know these coaches watch film. I am of the opinion that trick plays work best when you set them up beforehand. Like, running a sweep with JC and then turning it into a flea flicker the third or fourth time. Maybe GD thought the DRP was so outrageous that it wouldn't be expected. Did anyone see a for-real DR?

Not that I can remember
but maybe the play gave the option to pass or run and it just turned out that the pass option was always chosen.

Very good point BZ

I'm one of those that jump on GD, and I guess to quickly at times. I do think that he'll use Harris/Chiles in some games using the zone read. I don't think it is the type of offense that Colt can excel in. Somehow both of these young studs need to get some gametime, every game.

Very astute BZ
I agree 100%.
As far as developing an offense, and developing QBs for that matter, I don't see too many people out there better than GD. However, he is overy conservative on game day with play calling, and trying to shelter a young QB.
