Melton and Kindle suspended 3 games each
Per the Houston Chronicle. Which seems more or less fair to me. As I said in a previous thread, driving drunk is a serious crime, but it's not the indicator of bad character that some other crimes are (like armed robbery). It's an indicator of bad judgment, certainly, but not really of a propensity to further embarrass the program and themselves in the future. It's really more of a negligent mistake than an intentional one. And because of that, I think 3 games is probably appropriate.
I know some will say that they needed to get punished more severely so Mack can send the message that this won't be tolerated. But I don't think there's any sense in punishing these two out of proportion with what they deserve just to send a message to the team. That message needs to get sent, certainly, but there are better ways to do it than punishing two kids whose transgressions happened to take place at the same time as all these other incidents. Arbitrarily severe punishments don't help anything.

Coach Rucker
In the ESPN article about this, at the bottom it is revealed that RB coach Ken Rucker has prostate cancer. He announced it today and will be undergoing surgery Aug. 27. Hopefully he can return before the end of the season. It was discovered in a routine check-up with his doctor, and it is in the early stages.
He is a great coach who has performed great work. Best wishes to Coach Rucker and his family.
Agree
with Billyzane. That punishment sounds fine to me, especially considering I don't know the full circumstances of each DUI.

Agree as well
Also, if you read the transcript of Mack's press conference today on MBTF he says that they also must complete some community service, including some sort of work with a mother from MADD whose child was severely injured by a drunk driver. My understanding is that they will not even practice until they've completed the community service. Jones suspended from the team indefinitely until the legal process plays out - also seems fair to me. Hopefully this is the end of all the nonsense and we can get down to the task of winning a National Championship!
And Andre Jones?
The ESPN article notes that he's on indefinite suspension. Wonder what makes his case different from Joseph's?
hopefully sending a message

strong words from Mack. glad to see him acknowledge the incidents reflect on the team, university, and him personally. if the facts continue to progress to show that andre jones is guilty and he is booted from the team, i'm of the mind that appropriate punishments will have been levied.
-Melton and Kindle will not suit up for home games against Arkansas State, TCU or the September 15 road game at Central Florida. "At that time, I will sit down with both young men and see if they’ve learned from their experience and if they are ready to move forward as team members, .....Also, it’s a time where I need to stand up as head coach and take responsibility for anything that’s negative, be a strong leader and send a strong message and move forward with our football team."
Brown began his annual preseason press conference by apologizing to University of Texas administration, students, alumnus and fans for the recent misconduct from some of his players. "It’s not what we have worked so hard for nine and one-half years to portray in our program of class, integrity and character," Brown said.

Melton at DE
The report I saw on NFL Network said that Melton was a defensive end. Did he switch positions or was that a typo?

No typo
He (finally) lost his running back privileges and was turned into a DE. I think he played it in high school, so its not anything new for him.
yeP
I think he was even recruited as a DE.
