Their Top 10
- Kevin Durant
- Clarissa Davis
- Tommy Nobis
- Ben Crenshaw
- Huston Street
- Vince Young
- Cat Osterman
- Ricky Williams
- Earl Campbell
- Roger Clemens
You can definitely make arguments to shuffle these up, but they did a solid job getting 10 of the very best.
I personally have to move up VY. As great as Ricky was for this program, nothing can compare to what Vince Young did in back to back Rose Bowls. We live for national titles, not Heisman Trophies.
In any case - that's quite a group to be proud of.

Agree with the choices
Just not the order. Personally, I would have put VY #1, Earl #2 and Rocket #3, but that's one pretty good field to sort through. Anyone could justify those three guys as #1.
Also liked the inclusion of Clarrisa Davis (she was truly awesome), Ben Crenshaw, and Cat Osterman to balance the list. Not ALL of them could be from football and baseball.

Weird screw up
Read the caption for Ricky Williams. How could someone at Sports Illustrated not catch the error of saying that Ricky was drafted by the Bears rather than Mike Ditka's other coaching gig with the Saints. Nice editing, SI...

My guess is that SI
confused Benson (Bears) with Rick (Saints).

What about former world record holders?
I would think that Crocker, Josh Davis and Gary Hall Jr. would be in the discussion. They each won multiple gold medals and at one time held world records in several events.
Nobis needs to come off the list and put one of those three (probably Hall) in.
Several things pop out at me on these SI lists:
1 - On the tOSU list they have Jesse Owens as like number 5 or 4. As in, Jesse one of the greatest, if not the greatest, athletes to have ever walked planet earth - Owens. Flat out crazy talk.
Someone at SI needs to crack a book.
2 - Who is the least likeable athlete at each school? For me it would be Roger Clemens, for various reasons.
3 - Houston Street or James Street. I don't know who I would choose.

My List
#1. Vince Young, Saint Vincent, the most admired Longhorn of all time.
#2. Earl Campbell, The Tyler Rose, what a beast at both the college level as well as pro.
#3. Roger Clemens, The Rocket, see Campbell's above.
#4. - #10 the rest of the list in what ever order you want.
************************************************
#'s 1-3 in order because whenever they had the ball, you were either standing or on the edge of your seat.

Number 2...
Henry Melton all the way.

A few things...
- I hate S.I.
- I love that picture of Nobis. He looks like he's 38 years old and like he wants to eat someone's skull. What a bad ass.
- Why is my least favorite Longhorn athlete of all time #1 on this list, and why, for the love of god, is he wearing a fanny pack?

Seems like revisionist history
What was the basis for this selection? As great as Clemens is and was, he probably was not even the best pitcher on his team when he was at Texas. Shiraldi was the all american and had the better record. Clemens wasnt even all SWC. Swindell probably had the best career at Texas as far as Pitchers and may have been the best to pitch at Texas even though he had no National Championships. If SI intends this to be based on College Career then Clemens probably not on the list at all. We all know that he is one of the best MLB pitchers of all time but not sure he gets the nod for best at Texas. The others are all great choices and deserve to be on the list. James Street probably should be on the list because of how good he was at two sports.

Yeah...
See #1 above.

Have to agree about J. Street
Saw him pitch many times. The combo of Burt Hooten and Street in double-headers, which they did on a regular basis, would be good to compare with Schiraldi and Clemens.

Suffice to say...
... that I'm amazed and thrilled that SI has Clarissa on the list.
There are any number of other names that come to mind, so maybe we can consider 10(b) TJ Ford, 10(c) Brendan Hansen, 10(d) Ian Crocker, 10(e) Aaron Piersol to add to all the other names people propose above.
We had a couple of dominant players in Vball as well, but they don't get the pub so they wouldn't show up on anyone's radar. Demetria Sance comes to mind.

One thing that Impresses me.
How much of that talent is home grown. As one of the elite sports programs in the country UT has it's pick of some of the best talent around the country but so much of it is from Texas.
Other programs like Ohio st. or USC in the same league as UT are made up of kids from all over but it great to see how many actual Texans play for Texas.

This seems
as much of a commentary on what these athletes have done in their post-longhorn careers, as it is their time on campus. Which is at least one reason that Clemens is so high up. Should VY go on to win a couple super bowls, and make the pro-bowl a few more times, he will likely move up the list.
Side note - I have no problem listing Cat higher that VY. In a head to head competition, is she a better "athlete" that VY? Probably not. However, in the context of her sport, she was more dominant, over a longer time frame. She played in a non-revenue sport, but was the most dominant NCAA pitcher ever.

sure, cat threw 59 no hitters but....
she didnt win the "Granddaddy of them All" TWICE, compiling over 950 yards in the two and bringing a National Championship to the DKR.
