WTF????
I thought Mack had this under control after the summer. Gatewood isn't a HUGE loss, but he was a contributor on special teams and in the secondary. The problem is a bigger one - who is keeping tabs on these kids??? And who is telling them their careers are over if this shit happens?

just...wow.
By the way, if you want to add characters to the diary, blockquoting is always the way to go.
Like so, from the article comments:
I'm SHOCKED, just SHOCKED I say. Who would expect this kind of behaviour from one attending one of the nations TOP party schools?
repeat offender?
Isn't this Gatewood's second or third run-in with the law?
Dude, get a grip!
Yep..I believe that he was
busted with A Ross back in 2006. Dude is just plain stupid & careless. It continues to amaze me how these guys continually throw away opportunities of a lifetime for the "high" life.

even better!
News8Austin reporting that Ben Wells was also in the car. No mention of charges for him, though.
oops
my bad (or it was updated):
"Wells was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and released."

what the hell is a "dangerous drug"?
it's a misdemeanor possession charge, not a huge deal.
Longhorn senior safety Tyrell Gatewood was booked into Travis County Jail at 12:36 a.m. Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous drug.
He also faces what jail records describe as an “out of county misdemeanor.”
This is the second run-in with the law for the 22-year-old Gatewood in the past year. He was in the car with cornerback Tarell Brown and former linebacker Aaron Harris last year when they were pulled over a before the Ohio State game, resulting in marijuana and gun possession charges.
The charge against Gatewood — a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession — was later dropped when he passed a drug test, but he and Brown were suspended for the Ohio State game.

Re: Dangerous Drugs
From the News 8 article...
A sheriff's spokesman says the deputy smelled marijuana, searched the vehicle and found marijuana, Xanax and a baby bottle full of cough syrup containing codeine.
I'm thinking that the combination of weed, anti-depressants and purple drank is enough to constitute a dangerous drug.
Also...
Gatewood was arrested after a Travis County deputy stopped his vehicle for not signaling a turn while he and freshman defensive back Ben Wells were on a drive near Austin.
That's some shady probable cause right there. The cynic in me has to think that the cops were peeking into the car before pulling him over, if all he was doing "wrong" was not signaling.
Finally...
[Wells] graduated from high school early to enroll at Texas and take part in spring drills.
Hell, maybe we should just keep them in high school until May. Not getting a prom is apparently messing with these kids' heads.
the marijuana smell gave the probable cause
to search the car, not the traffic stop. regardless, if they weren't two black kids driving around at night, would they have been stopped for failure to signal in the first place?
can't say for sure, but i've seen enough of this in my time defending criminals to know that most cops are not equal opportunity assholes.
that doesn't mean that wells and gatewood didn't do anything wrong, nor am i trying to make excuses for them. i'm just tangentially pointing out systemic problems as i've see them up close. you hit it on the head there, jc25.
That's more to the point
Probable cause was 2 black kids driving around late at night. The "Smell" was just to cover their asses.
signals
would they have been stopped for failure to signal in the first place?
Recently, they have become sensitive to not signaling. We got stopped two days ago for failing to signal. It was also in the news that they have become sensitive on signals specially.
Two strikes, you're out
Needless to say he won't be on the plane to Orlando this week.

Bad Drivers
How about a driver's ed course for football players? If they are going to do something illegal, you would think they would drive in such a manner as to not draw attention.
I wonder how many times a UT football player has been pulled over and only received a traffic citation or warning.
Get him off the team
He doesn't contribute to a degree that kicking him off would be a loss. He's nothing but bad news and a bad model for the younger guys.
That attitude
makes me sick. If this had been Jamaal or a high profile starter, everyone would be preaching the importance of forgiveness. I mean, I don't put myself above that because even I would find it hard to suggest severe punishment on a player I really like but if we are going to give out smaller punishments for the stars, there's almost no point in punishing anyone. He should get a 5 game suspension or so if this was his first offense. I know little of that though...
punishment
i wasn't suggesting in any way that if he were a star he should get a lighter punishment. I'm merely pointing out that he's a repeat troublemaker who puts himself and his teammates in these situations. For this, he's not worthy of being a UT football player. For precedent, see Robert Joseph.
Dangerous Drug
In Texas, any medication that requires a doctors prescription is considered a "dangerous drug"--so that refers to the xanax and cough syrup with codeine that were found.
I certainly believe in innocent until proven guilty--so we'll have to see what shakes out. If this is his second offense, he needs to be OFF the team. Period. This has gone far beyond ridiculous--all of his teammates deserve better--they deserve to not be distracted and not be refered to as "bong-horns" and "book 'em horns", etc. These actions epitomize selfishness and lack of regard for others (i.e. teammates) who depend upon him. I am not talking about depending on him to make plays, etc but instead from the simple standpoint of not doing things that hurt and bring shame to the team. This is why it should not matter if he is a "superstar" or not--selfish teammates are only a drag in the end. Fortunately, from a fan perspective, if he is in fact guilty, him being off the team would not be a huge loss.
Agreed...
I think the Charles hypothetical is a bad example, since as far as we know, he's a model citizen on the team.
A better one would be if Tarell Brown was still on the team, and this was his second offense. Even as a starting cornerback, that behavior would be unacceptable, and most of us would have no problem if he was kicked off the team.
And I haven't heard of bonghorns until now, but it's quite catchy.
Add Peter Gardere
Still looking to see what happened, but I just heard he got booked in Austin
Gardere
"Former Texas quarterback Peter Gardere was arrested early this morning for under suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Austin.
Gardere, the only UT quarterback in history to beat rival Oklahoma four times, was released on a personal recognizance bond. Gardere was quarterback at UT from 1989-92."

Wells Arrested Also?
So was Wells arrested also. I've heard here in Dallas no but now the Dallas Morning News is citing Ben Wells was cited for drug paraphernailia and released? Sorry if this was already mentioned I did not see it.

is this getting ridiculous....
or what?
This nonsense is just going too far. Gatewood is the same knucklehead that got stopped before the tOSU game last year w/ Tarell Brown and Aaron Ross.
This is really getting to the embarrasing point. What in the world can be done if these kids are just going to continue to be stupid? Obviously punishing these other guys (Jones, Melton, etc) with "harsher" penalties is doing nothing.
I won't go so far to accuse any non users on the team with users, but I have a hard time believing these are "isolated incidents". I mean, the cops just don't catch EVERYBODY who uses illegal, drugs y' know. There may possibly be others on the team that just havent gotten caught yet. It's getting to the point where it seems like it is a semi-acceptable part of the team culture, among the players atleast.
The damn team needs to do mandatory drug testing. Loddie Doddie Everybody. And monthly. If you pop hot, you're out for the season. You still have to take part in monthly tests or you lose your scholarship. If you pop hot twice, you're gone for good. Maybe that will deter these idiots. Mack and the staff need to get tougher, this is nonsense.

hmmmmmm
could these be aggie cops??
I agree if players make repeat offenses no matter how much they contribute then kick them off the team! It's not worth sacrificing the integrity and character of the university and all who associate with it.
But i must say the few times i have been to Austin (i grew up in B/CS yuck, and now im in the Army) the cops are pretty shady.
