Open GameDay Thread: #6 Texas at Central Florida

Game 3: #6 Texas at Central Florida

#6 Texas Longhorns (2-0) vs Central Florida Knights (1-0)

Saturday, September 15, 2007 · 2:30 p.m. CT

Bright House Networks Stadium (45,301) · Orlando, FL

Television: ESPN2

Radio: 98.1 FM / 1300 AM (Austin)

Mechanical trouble with their plane and buses prevented the team from getting to work out in the stadium early, so this really will be a first look for Texas. The game marks Texas' first road test of the season against an experienced Central Florida team.

I'm anxious, but excited. Let's get after it...

Not gonna be able to watch online

Game should be up at texassports.com immediately after it ends. Until then, you'll have to do radio.

UCF Enrollment

During Craig Way's pregame summary of UCF, he mentioned that the school's population surpassed 48,000.  Nothing to do with football, but interesting, and sort of shocking.

it is shocking

They can support all those universities? I didn't think that many graduated from high school in Florida.

They have to be people coming down from New York.

This 2:30 slot is going to require some serious concentration. We've got four legitimate football games to take in all at the same time. I've got two tvs and fell totally unprepared.

Iowa State and Miss State - I am 2-0 today.  I held off on the OU bet.

I think we're overrating this year's team

National Champion caliber teams don't let drives like that happen.

Vince Young wins football games.

by chief on Sep 15, 2007 3:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe so but...

Chief,

You gotta just take it one game at a time when you consider how bad we've looked in the first two weeks.  Personally, I never mention National Championship teams until after we play OU.

I think that the team that showed up in the second half against what I thought was a good TCU squad was a NC caliber group....

...but obviously if the first quarter of this game is any indication we're in for a long day.  Break out the Pepto-Bismol.

by DreadedOne on Sep 15, 2007 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I should have qualified that statement more

That drive made me comment on it, but I'm taking into account the past two games as well.  I just see too many problems for us to run the table this year.  A lot of people that I've talked to (and quite a few here at BON) just kind of shrug off the glaring problems the team has.

Personally, I'm not the kind of person who can shrug those things off and say "We'll be fine".  I'm a Texas fan.  I expect to win, and falling short of a Big 12 championship (and subsequently a NC) is a disappointment for me.  I'm also a realist, and I know that if we struggle against ho-hum teams, OU is probably going to run all over us, not to mention A&M in College Station.

A lot of people say 10 win seasons are a success.  Sure they are, compared to Baylor, but we're a premier college football program.  We should be better than this, and I can't figure out who to blame.  It's just frustrating.

any idea where to watch this thing in Brooklyn? Williamsburg, even?

by longtitan on Sep 15, 2007 3:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Can't think of any place that will have the game

but most sports bars in brooklyn will turn to whatever game you want.  This is on ESPN2 so they should all have it, and there's no competition, as there are no other major sporting events right now, and Brooklynites don't care about college football.

Try Iona (they usually show soccer, but those games are over now), its on Grand near Bedford, and there's another sports bar on Bedford near N. 9th or so (I forget the name).  Or you could try the Turkey's Nest (Bedford and N 12th?) Any of those might turn their channel for you.

They can look like Texas Tech if they just pass the whole time. This could get UGLY in a hurry if the secondary doesn't make some plays.

Haven't you heard? Killer DBs.

You'd think they'd assessed the match-ups by the first quarter and know where we should have the advantage, which considering our receivers, should be a pick 'em. Do they work that angle? Except for the TD pass on the obvious slant, no.

They won't or don't want to stretch the field long. Long one of the flaws of this offense and there's no good reason for it. To me it means that don't believe in the deep ability of the passer or the receivers or both. Inexplicable.

i recall the K-state game in 2003

that mack went for the win on 4th and goal instead of the tie and overtime.

Because

UCF has nothing to lose. We have a lot to lose. Not to mention that it's a non-conf game.

Florida offensive ingenuity...

It's almost shocking to see a coach get the most out of his athletes after watching Greg Davis' offense.

by the1austin on Sep 15, 2007 5:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I've made allusions to that several times.

Florida is the edge and we're a pretty long way from it.

Maybe this will sober up the Horns

from the press box on down. Having a real hand on your throat can do that in a way nothing else can. This team needs to be pushed to be better. They have a real live situation now. In terms of Dallas and the future, this is great experience - if we survive it.

We beat Ark State by 8, and trailed TCU by 10..

This is more than a reality check, there are real teams with the offensive and defensive schemes.

by the1austin on Sep 15, 2007 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's how I feel

We're gonna get our asses handed to us by teams that are, you know, actually GOOD at football.

Vince Young wins football games.

Nice throw and catch to Cosby.

And another nice job by Colt side stepping the rush.

Why not

go back to what we did in the first half.

Just what we are doing now.

It sucks, but it works and has been effective...

Good thing

CO can break a tackle.

by kirk1005 on Sep 15, 2007 5:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Third and two

We've seem to live there all day.

We got it - and we have to get the D of the field for a breather. They've been out there way too long.

what a catch by Quan...

another

waste of a challenge.

Why was this not reviewed upstairs if the one for the rb from UCF was and it was more clear than this one.

Won't win challenge

but a good use of TO to realign offense. And get D some more time. D will have to win this thing.

DLine

Our D line needs to step up and show that the players are of top quality.

do we have more than 4 offensive plays? My high school JV team could scheme against this offense

How sacred

can a brand new stadium be?

by kirk1005 on Sep 15, 2007 6:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What annoys me...

Is this is lose-lose for Texas any way we cut it.  Decent mid-major team.  Brand new stadium.  Emotionally charged.  Nothing for UT to gain.  No matter how tough a game it is - legitimately tough - not winning big looks bad.

Whatever.  I'll take a W any way I can get it.  But I'm scared of the RRS right now.

by DisplacedTexan on Sep 15, 2007 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fine

Three and out. Colt and our offense back on the field. Let's go 12 plays for 75 yds and a game ending TD.

by awiggo on Sep 15, 2007 6:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

With Greg its more like..

10 plays for 33 yards and a 46 yard field goal attempt.

by the1austin on Sep 15, 2007 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For us: not at all.

We're not in the business of sanctifying their structures or their season. We should have been the nastiest damn predator that they could have invited. We've played way too nice.

We're playing like a middle weight with no knock-out punch.

UT DEFENSE

Well it is evident that the UT defense needs some work. colt played great but man I was scared we would loose. my son was in iraq so I had my speaker phone so he could hear the game. I am just concerned about the secondary. plus the defesne needed to put more pressure on the qb from ucf. next victim rice.
