Been a long time since we had five FGs in a game.
I remember the 15-15 OU game. Anyone think of any others?
And 29 is a very odd score. Like 11, it rarely occurs.
Red zone
I'll still take FG's over TO's.

Agreed
But it's the stalling and suddenly conservative play calling. It bothers me that we become predictable within 20 yards.
by DisplacedTexan on Sep 15, 2007 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Conservative
damn Mack. A field goal doesn't do much good the way our defense is playing. He called that series like we were just trying to run the clock out.
Now the game rests on our D.
The drive did give our D a good break.
They'd been out there a long time.
FGs
This offense should NEVER attempt 6 fgs in one day. That is ridiculous.
Palmer again!
Defense saving the team.

Tweedles?
A- for both of em.
I loved that
He was pointing and willing the ball to stay in. Well done MB

Called it
In the other thread i thought Charles as was due for a big run.
Yeah JC
Players in better shape and the deeper team finally starts to dominate.
That a way Horns.
WOO HOO
JC takes advantage of a defense that didn't know what was going on.
Huh WTF? Why go for 2?
Now UCF can tie with a TD, 2 pt conversion, and FG.

Head scratcher
Made absolutely no sense. It would be good for Mack to explain this decision b/c to all of us watching the game tonight we just had to assume he misread his "when to go for 2" cheat sheet. The reasoning is relevant b/c there will undoubtedly be numerous "1 or 2 pt" or "4th Down - go or no go" decisions this year and it would be good to know we're not just flipping coins on the sidelines.

if we win....
Mack needs to honest in his post game comments. We won, but that's about it. We need to get to work and work harder than ever before. We did not play like the number 6 team in the nation. This team has had enough wake up calls....time has run out.
That was a hell of a hit he took.
It's not like he just laid it on the ground.
Hat-on-ball hits will happen. He is obviously better on holding on to the pelote this year.
I hate our offense
If we score touchdowns, this game is a blowout. I suppose this is what we're stuck with. This isn't a MNC-caliber team. The land-thieves are going to kill us.
Game.
Take care of the ball and we're 3-0.
As bad as we've looked at times, the Horns are undefeated. It could be a lot worse, see Michigan, Auburn, Georgia, Ok State.
I guess I can only be consoled by that
once or twice. These coaches still refuse to find a way to exploit their obvious talent advantages week after week.
by BrooklynHorn on Sep 15, 2007 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions
COME ON
Why can't he hold on to the freaking football?
And that's not a late hit. He was still inbounds.
Sweet, Christ, NO!!
My god, can you guys finish this
and let me fucking relax.
Once again
WHY DID WE GO FOR 2!!??
They'd need 2 TD's if we just got the extra point to make it a 12 pt game.
by goingforthecorner on Sep 15, 2007 6:30 PM CDT reply actions
They really need to answer this
WTF really
OOC Schedule
Time to schedule d1-aa teams exclusively.
EFFFF
How do we not get one single guy to the qb?
Onside kicks...
were needed to beat ASU and UCF. Sad huh?
by goingforthecorner on Sep 15, 2007 6:32 PM CDT reply actions
I hate our defense!!
I hope I don't hate our hands team
2 pt Conversion by UT
Un-defendable. The coaches must have gotten confused by the math. With the Horns up 11 pts, there is no reason to go for two. None.
The announcers were exactly right: there is no difference between 12 and 13 but there is a huge difference between 11 and 12. Coaching brain fart.
Now they still have a chance.
How stupid
This reminds me of the App St-Mich game.
Mich went for 2 when they didnt need to and so did we...
Yes, Continue drinking heavily.
Get a case. Just in case.
I hate coach speak
and Mack may be one of the most egregious offenders.
Anyway, Horns improve to 3-0. Exhale.
3-0
Important in other sports, but when your championships are based heavily in subjective rankings, it doesn't mean shit. We looked bad. In fact, out of the three games we've played, only the second half against TCU did I see good play.
You might be able to convince yourself that 3-0 is a good thing, but the pollsters will punish us (or at least they should).
if you end up undefeated
it doesn't amtter how bad you looked because there are almost never 3 undefeated teams from BCS conferences.
Mack is too nice of a guy
He lacks fire, and the team reflects it.
by HookeminOKC on Sep 15, 2007 6:38 PM CDT reply actions
ssssssssssssssssh
yeah, really? Did they reflect it in 05 also?
Oct. 6
this is the first time i have said this in a couple of years: I am afraid we are gonna get murdered.
by kicker @ Burnt Orange Nation on Sep 15, 2007 6:40 PM CDT reply actions
Right now, we are closer to Michigan than to OU.
We are 4 or 5 plays away from being 1-2 with losses to a Sun Belt and Conference USA team. Didn't I read all summer that Greg Davis had tweaked the offense to reflect our talent? We have the same problems we did last year. We are awful in short yardage, the passing game is centered around 4 yard receiver screens, our secondary is getting rocked (if Israel could throw, we would have seen this a lot better).
Has anybody else noticed that Sherrod Harris and John Chiles have not played one snap this season? Mack, Greg, remember the Alamo Season and find a way to get Chiles in the game.
exactly
No leadership on the team. It's reflected in the off-the-field problems and the lack of fire on the field

Coaches choke
Mack Brown and the coaches conduct of this game borders on criminal.
It is time to step up to the plate and tell it like it is. No other coaching staff in the country can abuse talent like this group of losers. The players have my sympathy.
We will now be exposed to the usual Mack Brown post game coachspeak - an endless bunch of dribble.
by valonghorn on Sep 15, 2007 6:41 PM CDT reply actions
ok ok
I'm fucking sick of people throwing Mack under the bus after a bad performance. You deserve Mackovic
I'm sick of it, too
Why can't we all realize he and his staff are throwing themselves under the bus?
It was about as awful as the first game of the season.
October is going to SUCK!!!!
I think its pretty obvious at this point that unless this team gets in gear and makes some serious improvements we are going to be hating life in October.
Fire
When's the last time Mack cussed someone out? I hated it when my coaches in school cussed at us, but shit, the feel-good motivation isn't working.
Come on, Texas!
Ogbonnaya > Charles?
just putting it out there.
Seems for every home run Charles had, he had 10 stops for a loss and a fumble.
by the other Andrew on Sep 15, 2007 7:13 PM CDT reply actions
by my estimate...
By my estimate, he's a net loss. He has the occasional big play, the occasional big loss, but mostly does nothing. We also suffer a big opportunity cost by playing him: every time he carries, we aren't giving the ball to Ogbonnaya or McGee, either of whom (depending on the play) could outperform Charles.
Disagree
Charles is a threat to break a 30 yard run everytime he touches the ball. The holes are just not there this year. This offensive line is not even close to last year's in terms of talent, and we had trouble even then opening holes with Blalock, Studdard, and Sendlein. Yeah, Charles dances sometimes too much but often he is trying desperately to try to make something out of nothing.
Don't get me wrong though; I have no problem with giving CO ten carries a game, especially for runs in the red zone and for plays designed for inside the tackles.
and look at when JC fumbled
6 yards from paydirt and on the drive where we shoulda driven the dagger.
JC is 3x the running back Chris is, but JC has a knack for funking up soul killing drives.
by the other Andrew on Sep 15, 2007 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions
heres what every JC game reminds me of
Remember the A&M game where Ricky broke the record? He had that 65 yard run for a TD to bust it.
He also kept fumbling and giving A&M a chance to get back into the game. I dont know what JC's risk/ reward is.
by the other Andrew on Sep 15, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions
I hear ya
But I think JC had a string of 50+ carries without a fumble that started at the end of last season and carried into this one.
The fumbles are painful but the potential on every carry is still too high for me to put CO out there in his place.
Remember that JC has had over a 100 yards in all three games this year. That is even more impressive when you factor in the lack of experience of our offensive line and the fact that he gets the ball standing still on a lot of his carries.
One more thing
JC and CO are both solid and both deserve playing time. We shouldn't be wasting our time debating who should be the starter. There are plenty of other arguments to make on that front.
Should Kelson see more playing time at safety in front of Jackson or Griffin? Should our backup linebackers all become starters: Muck, Norton, and Kindle over Killebrew, Bobino, and Derry? Should Beasley be out there at starting corner or maybe even Curtis Brown?
It was hard to see the whole field on the tv screen this afternoon, but Norton and Muck both played great games against TCU and I thought really showed they deserved more playing time.
agree
those are the things we should be arguing over.
I'd like to hear the argument where someone thinks Kelson should be playing less.
by the other Andrew on Sep 15, 2007 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think so
Come on, now. I hate fumblitis as much as the next person but JC averaged 7 yards a carry (22 carries for 153) to Ogbannaya's 3.6 ypc (7 for 25). At least JC is a homerun threat anytime he touches the ball and is a defensive coordinator's nightmare when he is hitting on all cylinders.
Ogbannaya is solid, no doubt, but his upside is way below JC's.
I can guarantee you if JC gets hurt or is unable to play against OU, I bet you OU's defensive coordinator will be doing somersaults not having to gameplan against JC. It is much easier to defend against an Ogbannaya or McGee than it is against a JC.
On the year, JC is averaging 5.6 ypc and Ogbannaya is averaging 2.85 ypc.
It isn't even close and is silly to have this discussion.
If not for those two fumbles, we wouldn't even be talking about this.
UCF's 32 points
Everybody piles on GD ... everybody talks fire and leadership. Anybody else realize your defense just gave up 32 points to UCF. Texas O only scored 29 ... B Jackson's pick six turned out to be huge.
people see what they want to
GD haters will bag on the offense. Mack haters will bag on his lack of fire.
I see 3-0 and an exciting upcoming season where we're not gonna win every game.
by the other Andrew on Sep 15, 2007 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Totally Agree
We kicked five field goals and still scored 28 on offense. That should be enough to win easily against a team like CFU.
We have serious trouble on offense in the red zone but our list of areas to improve must start with the defense.
Number 6 Ranking Meaningless
Where we are ranked right now means nothing. Win on the Red River - and you zoom to at least 3 or 4 anyway.
I think the game was a net positive for the Horns. That was a fired up, well coached bunch that really challenged the Horns. Study the tape, fix the mistakes and lets move on.
I'm gettin' a-skeered....
This is the best we can do against three mediocre teams? We're going to get the shit kicked out of us by OU.
So far we seem to have been playing to the level of the competition. Hopefully we can show something against OU. Maybe these first three games have just been a smoke screen and we're really going to unload the arsenal in Dallas?
No identity, bad identity or forced identity
Ughh. This looks like a 9- to 10-win team.
I don't care for the "pass to set up the run" approach but what can we do with no power runners and no real running threat from the QB position? And, if the passing game is even working, we have a HB that (1) can reel off a 30-yarder but then have another five runs for 2 yards and (2) can fumble at any time. Short-yardage running game is still horrid.
C'mon. It's not like playing at UCF is like playing in the Horseshoe. The Horns needed an MVP day from Bailey to win this game. Not good. And the decision to go for 2 points after the last TD???
Season to date "feels" really bad in the pit of the stomach. Good thing we've been getting the #2 QB some quality reps during games ... oops! Last year's Florida model might be a good thing to actually try!

Think about this...
While it was a close game, Texas did manage to show flashes of brilliance at every position today. The offense moved the ball rather well, considering the dismal offensive TDs put up, and I was really impressed with the first quarter play of the defensive line. Notice how the UCF QB was eating grass after pretty much every pass attempt he tried in the first 15 minutes? Hey, even Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum had some serious heads up plays, and thats not even including the INT for a touchdown. Its good to know that these boys CAN play well, and that if they manage to string together a complete game where they finish their plays and work whistle to whistle like they know how, Texas can be a pretty scary opponent.
Bad D
Here we thought the problems on defense would be with the secondary. But again we see our 'top' defensive line getting manhandled by an average offense. I shudder to think what's going to happen when we meet a team with a really good line. Did you see what USC did to Nebraska last night?
