MACK BE A MAN FOR ONCE

Is it just me, or is anyone else tired of Mack Browns political statements after every game. Damn, by listening to him last night (and every other game) you would think that the UT coach was elected and not hired. I would have loved for him to come out and say, "we played like crap and we coached like crap, and we sure as hell better improve or we are going to get our asses handed to us by TCU ,OK,Nebraska....and A&M". I hate to say it but I have to wonder what the response of Bob Stoops would have been if his team would have played like that against ASU. I always have loved his intensity even though I hate OU and think mack just too many times wanst to be the players friendly grandpa and not enforcer. Reflecting on UT football as a whole (while at the game, bc god knows there was al ot of time for that) I solidified my feelings that We won a national championship not because of coaching but bc of an awesome freak of nature at quarterback and two sick lines. MACK GROW A PAIR AND CALL A SPADE A SPADE.

Mack's Style

It won him a title, I don't see a really ugly opening day victory as any reason to change it.

I like mack

but come on, I think every fan at that game last night (me included) wanted to hear him say the obvious bc we have waited half a year and a performance like that doesn't merit his post game comments.

Name that comment:

"They understand we can be better, and we have to correct mistakes but there’s a big difference (between a win and a loss). It’s a lot more fun to be criticized when you win than it is when you lose. We felt we could play better in a lot of areas and didn’t, but we still won. We’re not far off. I think that’s what I’m pleased about."

It's Bob Stoops after beating a UAB team that would go 3-9 in CUSA 24-17 last season on opening day. I'm not saying it was pretty or I'm happy, but the answer is not Mack changing the way he talks to his team through the media.

sounds pretty political to me...

I think noone can be the hard ass enforcer of olden times.  Everyone thinks when a highly talented team underperforms its because they are not being hard enough on them.

Let's be honest, modern day college coaches have to kiss as much butt as they kick or else the next Golden Child recruit will go somewhere that they do.  A friend wrote me after this loss and said that DR would have locked the doors, chewed on his guys for about an hour, then let one or two assistants do the same and THEN make the team go out and practice under the lights until 1 or 2 a.m.  And while that gets all our blood going it just can't happen in the modern era for a host of reasons.

This IS the style that got us the first National Championship since the 60's and we'd better accept it for what it is else we find out what happens when you drive off a coach with unrealistic expectations and end up with a 'Mack' of a different color or have our short term memories already forgotten the sufferings of Makovic, McWilliams eras?

The difference...

...being Bob Stoops has 4 Big-XII Championships.

--- All roads to the Big-XII Championships run through OU and the RRS. It's not just "another game." ---

^name that comment

Its not one comment but the overall demeanor that he carries regardless of the situation. I feel insulted when he tells me, "the boys played great and we were glad to get the win, asu's a great football team and our hats go off to their boys", not no but Hell NO. Tell me exactly what I posted above so at least there is some reassurance that you know what went on tonight and what 90,000 other people saw too. Thats my point and that is what I mean about Bob Stoops no B.S., which is what we heard last night on KVET

mack knows what he's doing

you can bet the team is getting yelled at in private for their crappy play.

publicly, mack's a politician. and that's how he has so many friends in the profession and how he recruits so well and how he has been able to manipulate PR his entire career.

he doesn't need to say that we suck and by implication that arkansas state sucks just to please YOU.  he knows what he's doing.

I'm not sure mack knows what he's doing...
I'm sure that the players are getting chewed out in the privacy of the locker room.  That's not the point.  I want to see some fire and emotion from Mack.  I want a coach that wears his heart on his sleeve instead of someone who feeds us politically correct garbage.

the point is...

that it only matters what he's telling the team, not what he's telling you and I.  I don't care what he's telling you and I because you and I don't matter to the performance of the team.

if he's not laying into the team (or the assistant's aren't at least), then maybe that's cause for concern.

but as far as what Mack needs to say publicly, i think i'm going to trust the guy who's one of the best in the country at being a college football coach over, say, the opinions of you or I on a blog.

the point is...
you're right, it doesn't matter what he says to you or I.  What I meant to say is that I want a coach that owns up to his and/or players' mistakes instead of feeding us with...we don't get to play preseason games.  You know what mack, ASU and everyone else in college football don't get to play preaseason games either.

right

I personally was pissed about our performance last night and of course I selfishly want mack to show some fire and own up to how crappy his team played.  and maybe if mack was a new coach with no track record at Texas, I'd agree with you here.

but Mack has been saying the same things for years and all he's done in that span is become one of the greatest coaches in the college football while piling up a ridiculous record and a national championship.  So what I'm saying is that whatever he's doing has been working, and I'm inclined to defer to a guy who has made this Texas program what it is by doing exactly what he did after lst night's game.

BZ, your comment is on target...

I think we all get tired of Mack selling us ocean front property in Arizona after a poorly played game.  Just once we'd like to see him get pissed off, but if we have not seen it in the last 9 years, I doubt we will ever see it.  While he may not have as many skins on the wall as Boobie S. or even John Mackovic, he has returned us to being a winner.  While just a toddler when we won the MNC in '69 & '70 and a bit young to embrace the greatness of Darrel Royal while he coached at our great University.  Mack has brought us back to the Promised Land of college football. I remember the lean years of Fred when I was a student and this was a coach who had a .750 winning percentage (anyone remember or have a "Fire Fred" shirt).  After we got our wish to have him removed, we went through another 10 years of hell and 4 loosing seasons with some embarrassing losses.

Living here in the land of thieves during the 5 year loosing streak, many boomers would tell me we had to fire Mack if he lost again.  I thought about it and I’d ask why.  Fire a coach who was winning 9 and 10 games a season?  It wasn’t that long before when we just prayed to be over .500 and not get embarrassed in the bowl game.  It is a lot easier to drive from OKC to Austin when you can be confident of a "W".  (My boss did call me after the Arkansas loss to make sure I had not committed suicide).
In summary, does Mack piss me off with his fluff talk when the team plays like crap? Hell yes, (Not as much as when every team used to scare him during his weekly presser.) but he has been one coach I have not "fired" from my living room (GD is a different story).  If Mack starts to regress back to .500 ball with the talent he’s recruited, then the rumblings are warranted.  Until then we just need to back away from the ledge and see what happens over the course of the next few weeks.  The McWilliams and Mackovic years were painful and it would suck for us to hire a Howard Schnellenberger type like ou did just because MB is not a fire and brimstone guy.

exactly...

My sentiments as well...and I was there too during the 'lean' years, quite possibly the worst 4 years of UT football of the modern era.  It puts a whole different spin on it when you catch yourself bitching about another 10 game win season, when you know there were times when .500 would have been cause for celebration.

This is NOT an excuse for weak play, but has anyone yet offered up the notion that our depth chart was pretty loosely set prior to this game and as an extra game was maybe being treated like a pre-season game that it sort of is?

Yeah plenty went wrong, but I could swear we were trying to skate without going too deep in our playbook for whole portions of that game, it may have been more to evaluate the talent, i.e. balance a win with real game experience for some guys.  Some shined bright Beasely comes to mind amongst the youngsters...others bit it hard.

locker room

From what I've heard, Mack has NEVER yelled in front of the players.  He may use bitter or sarcastic words, but he never raises his voice in front of the players.  Although he is probably ripping the assistant coaches a new one right now.

USAF 49, my sentiments exactly

how do we know he knows what he's doing. Recruiting, TV Spots, sure there is no one better but after last night I just have to question if he knows how to prepare for teams or does he just rely more on talent. Look at it this way, what do you think that ASU coach could have done with our team last night if he was going against mack and ASU. I am by no means writing the season off or calling for mack brown to be fired, but if you were happy with last night and the response afterword then you can't be a concerned fan. I mean watching that game was brutal and I have been to my fair share of bad games at DKR

You are completly right

we should hire the ASU coach on the spot.  It was obviously coaching genius out there that almost got them the chance to time the game with a minute left.

I am a concerned fan,

But I am unconcerned with how Mack talks to the media.  He has always spoken to the media with the same level head, regardless of whether we just won the national title, or played lousy uninspired game against ASU.  He has been around the block enough to realize that you aren't going to get anywhere by publicly calling out 18-21 year old kids.
