Only with college football
Doesn't carry much weight for world news, politics, or the arts.
But football? It's the king of kings.
the gray lady?!?!
lucky dog....
i once had a supreme court case i was working on make the new york times editorials, but i was not mentioned (with good reason).

I agree with PB
There's almost no way that will ever root for the Houston Texans. Only if they are playing the Redskins, Eagles, or Giants.
And that is from a big Houston Oilers fan. I have nothing against the city at all. I like Houston. I have lived there and have friends and family there. In a way it is poetic that Houston's old team got Vince. Okay, that's a stretch.
Reasons to not root for the Houston Texans
Number One - They passed on Vince. STOOPID 'nuff said
Number Two - The name. Yuk. "the Texans". That is SOO LAME!! Every body in this state is a "Texan". There are little kids in diapers that are "Texans". There are 98 pound weaklings, computer nerds, and asthmatics in this state that are all "Texans". Why in the hell is that a good nickname for a pro football team??? It isn't scary. It doesn't strike fear into other teams. Its as if the Steelers changed their name to The Pennsylvanians. SHEESH.
There are so many other good names for a team that picking "the Texans" is inexcusable. The Houston Herd. The Houston Hounds. The Houston Hurricanes. The Rattlers. The Outlaws. The Lawmen. The Houston Flying Mugwumps. Maybe even, gasp, THE OILERS!!! DUH! HELLO, MACFLY, ANYBODY HOME???!?!?!
ALMOST ANY NAME WOULD BE BETTER THAN "THE TEXANS".
Ask yourself: When the Titans play the Texans, which team do you root for? Huh? Huh? I'M TALKING TO YOU!

I hate it too
but I think "Texans" refers to the original legends of Texas (Crockett, Houston, Bowie, etc) as this was their collective name in the 19th Century after the Mexican-American War.

I root for the Titans, without a doubt. I'm a Cowboys fan, though, so the Texans don't do anything for me.

You guys are ridiculous
Anyone who still thinks that selecting Mario Williams over Vince Young was a stupid decision needs to get in touch with reality.
This ain't college football brother! This is the National Football League! It's the AFC South!
In the NFL, having a great QB isn't nearly important as it is in college. You're not going to win a MNC without a competent QB. Meanwhile, in the NFL, freaking Rex Grossman can take his team to the Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson won one within the last decade. Defense wins, and that's why the Texans selected the #1 defensive prospect in the draft instead of the QB.
Young = Michael Jordan
Mario = Hakeem Olajuwon
Just like the Rockets, the Texans went with the freak of nature over the bad-ass.
There's nothing stupid about it.
And by the way, I'll take Matt Schaub over Vince Young any day. Young's faster, and that's about it. Schaub is pretty mobile himself though, and a much more accurate passer. Both are leaders. Schaub is a much better fit for Kubiak's system.
I'm not asking you all to root for the Texans. I'm telling you to back off and get over the fact that Houston didn't select your boy.
And I find it ironic that Longhorn fans call the Texans "NFL Aggy", considering that the Titans are the ones that play like Texas A&M. Mediocre passing game because of VY's inaccuracy and bad receivers, so instead, they just rely on running the ball.
I guess the "Texans" are a lame name. We must've ran out of astronomy-related names. There are a lot of team names that don't make sense or don't strike fear. That's kind of a lame reason to not root for a team.

the level of cognitive dissonance in this post
is staggering.
and when they were drafting mario williams, it wasn't a choice between vince and matt schaub. it was a choice between vince and david carr and they picked carr (and gave him an 8-million dollar bonus). then, when they realized they made a mistake, they had to give away a 2 more second round draft picks to get schaub (a career backup) and got nothing in return for releasing carr. is schaub minus two high draft picks minus carr's 8-million dollar bonus minus yet another losing season with carr make him a more valuable quarterback than vince young? especially when you can get 2 impact defensive players in the second round (i.e. DeMeco Ryans, who's better than Mario Williams)?
No thanks to VY
There's no doubt the Texans lucked out that the Falcons were stupid enough to get rid of Schaub. Still, credit goes to our competent GM for finding him. I don't care how many draft picks it took to get him. I'd rather lose draft picks to get Schaub than just draft VY straight up.
is schaub minus two high draft picks minus carr's 8-million dollar bonus minus yet another losing season with carr make him a more valuable quarterback than vince young?
Absolutely. Not even close. Schaub is a borderline star that can actually throw accurately instead of Vince. We'll survive the money loss and draft pick losses. We just drafted Jacobi Jones and he's looking like a steal. We still have our first round pick. With VY, we'd have to wait for him to develop in a better passer and to stop making foolish mistakes.

VY is from Houston
he was a hometown boy who could have returned triumphant and inspired the entire city. . .
even ignoring the other obvious reasons it would rock to have VY as your QB, that Cinderella story would have earned the Texans some big bucks from ticket sales and merchandising.
Houston blew it on many levels, IMHO.

You know what else sells tickets?
Winning games. This is Texas. Football is big in Houston regardless. As long as the Texans are semi-decent, they will sell out. Ticket sales and merchandising will not be a problem. This Colts game coming up will be a sellout for sure.
Fairy tales my ass. We're worried about putting together a good football team. What other levels did we blow it on?
