Why is Greg Davis still employed with UT?  I mean that with all honesty and sincerity.  I would really like to hear a solid justification for his job performance, abilities, potential, achievements, etc.  Something that is more than the typical "give the guy a break" and "the players are young/inexp" defenses.  I seriously doubt that if we let G.D. go tomorrow, that he would be some hot commodity.  And that should be very telling.

I dunno.  Perhaps I am way off base here, and if so, please let me know.  I just don't think G.D. is a top 25 or even top 50 Offensive Coord. and yet the players, fans and alumni all expect a top 10 team (or at least a top 10 offense with big play capability).

I will be concede that GD did do a great job of working with VY and developing him as a QB.  Davis really got the most out of VY while he was here and I believe he was named Offensive Coord. of the year for his efforts.  

However, he had VY.  If he HAD screwed that one up...yikes!

I just don't understand.  He's had an NFL caliber QB (Simms), a headcoach caliber QB (Major), two All-time badass running backs (Ricky and Cedric) and a collegiate and NFL monster WR (Roy).  Yet he couldn't even coach that talent to a single Conference Championship!  The talent has been there.  And I guarantee, that those players all had more than enough desire (and an expectation) to win.  It HAS to be the coaching.

This year is a bit of an exception.  The talent level overall is down, but McCoy, Sweed and Charles are all uber talented.  So what does Davis do?  He throws 5 yard out routes to Cosby and Jones.  He runs Charles out of the shotgun on counters and sweeps at the most predictable times.

I am trying not to just out and out bash on Davis.  I just don't get it.  He has consistently underperformed at his job and yet he seems so insulated.

Is this a product of the good 'ol boy system?  He and Mack are buds; Mack and Royal are buds; Royal, Dodds and Mack are buds; ergo Davis gets to keep his job for as long as the circle jerk continues?

It infuriates me to no end that I am able to accurately predict our offensive plays at least half of the time.  That even casual fans know our weakness offensively is the line yet our O-Coord. does not compensate for this.  What is he thinking?  What is his thought process?  How does he convince himself to call the same plays over and over and over with little to no success.  That's insanity right?  I mean literally.  Maybe he IS insane.  It would certainly explain alot and perhaps prevent my impending aneurysm from trying to follow Davis' game plans.

I love Mack as much as the next guy.  He really turned the program around and has elevated Texas back to its rightful place among the elites of College football.  But it has been widely acknowledged that he is not the greatest X's and O's kind of coach.  And that is fine.  He does plenty of other things well enough to compensate for that shortcoming. But, that only works if your Coordinators are able to pick up that slack, but that does not seem to be the case here.

I just don't know how much longer I can watch a 3 yard out route or a run out of the shotgun a 3rd and 7 play go for two or three yards.  Then have the camera switch to Mack who is in his standard "hands on knees" stance.  He raises the mic on his headset to reveal a shit eating grin and does his rapid clap and yells something like "C'mon men!" or "’Atta way boys!"  Encouraging the players is great, especially after a three and out, but once...just once...I would really love to see him turn and glare up at Davis after a three and out from especially inept playcalling.
