Conundrum
I was talking with a fellow Longhorn about this earlier today and I have come up with a question for my fellow BONers. Would you rather see Texas do well for the rest of the season, finishing up with 9 or 10 wins as usual, or lose 4 or 5 more games this season, keeping in mind that the latter would all but assure a shakeup in the coaching regime?

Tempting to want a coaching shake-up
But I will never hope the longhorns lose. Ever.

The REAL Conundrum - IMHO
Would losses be worth it if we start relying more heavily on our young guys in order to get them some meaningful experience?
Is edging out wins over OK State and Tech to finish with only a few losses better than getting some real experience for the young talent while losing a couple more games?
Unless something drastic changes, which is possible, this year's team just isn't much to write home about. At least watching the young guys develop might be something to look forward to on Saturday - win or lose.
I'm not saying this team doesn't have a chance to be great. They do. But at some point we'll have to realistically acknowledge that they either will be or won't be. If the latter is the case, I pray that Mack realizes that fans would rather have a shot at a spectacular season next year than spend this year watching our experienced mediocrity struggle against teams that we once dominated.
Which makes you feel better: 9-3 with the seniors, 7-5 with the young guys (both fairly pessimistic scenarios)?

This is the question we should be asking. I'd rather go 7-5 with the young talent and hope the experience will be a foundation for next year. Note, however, that this prospect won't work everywhere. It's a great idea for linebackers and corners, a questionable idea at QB and RB, and a bad idea at WR and OL. But you already know that.

"questionable idea at QB and RB"
QB I agree, Colt is the only one capable of "running the show" for now (though Chiles will do a good deal of running).
RB, however, I've seen nothing but good things from V McGee. It's a very small sample to pull from right now, but every carry has looked at least on par with what Charles has done this year. I wouldn't mind seeing his carries increase dramatically until this theory is proven wrong.

RB
I would undoubtedly agree with you on RB if Charles were a senior. But he's a junior, he isn't currently meeting his potential, and he could significantly improve with one more year. His major weaknesses are getting through holes and holding onto the ball, both of which seem coachable. His big strength is speed, which cannot be taught. If over the next year the coaches could coach up in those two areas, Charles's speed would make him an exceptional and nearly unstoppable RB. It might be worth the investment. On the other hand, I agree that McGee is damn impressive, could contribute immediately, and might be just as helpful as Charles next year. I guess that's why I think the RB question--as opposed to the CB or LB question--is close.
Urine on the floor. That's why.

that's not a problem...
I dont think we do worse with the younger players. We'd probably do better AND get them valuable experience for next year. It's a win-win.

The thing is...
I still think we've got the talent to play the younger kids, get them experience, and run the table from here on out. Call me an eternal optimist....
Honestly, as nice as seeing Greg Davis get canned would be, I can't in good faith root for the Horns to lose. If we can win 10 games a year throwing screens and running the zone read on 3rd and 20, whatever. Davis won't be here forever. Sure Mack is in his corner, but this is the University of Texas. A tolerance for losses like these isn't something we're known for.

I'd rather...
Win Out.
But if that's not going to happen, I'll be happy if we beat Oklahoma. If we beat dOUchebag, I'll be satisfied for the year.
And if that's not going to happen, I won't be a happy camper with 2 losses, and more possibly on the way against the likes of Okie State, Nebraska, and tamu.
It's really not the losses I care about either, by the way. If we were trying really hard, playing as well as we could, coaching as best as we could, and putting the best guys on the field....I couldn't care less about how many wins we get. I would be able to know that we didn't just "fold" under pressure, or not live up to expectations. It's the fact that we're looking shitty and losing games because of poor personnel and coaching decisions. We flat out look like shit and, if the coaching continues, we could lose 4+ games. We could very well win those games, based on talent alone, but we play down to bad teams and we're not scaring anybody.
I love my team, and I'll always support the Longhorns, 14-0 or 0-12. It just hurts my heart knowing that we are better than that. We are The University. We're Texas.

How many times are we going to go through this?
- Mack Brown is the winningest coach in the last 7 years.
- Greg Davis is HIS BOY AND ALWAYS WILL BE. GREG DAVIS WILL NEVER BE FIRED AS LONG AS MACK IS HERE.
- Stop contemplating coaching "changes." The only changes will be if a coach accepts another job.
