The Royal Legacy

WE all hold DKR in the highest regard, however sandwiched between those 1963 and 1969 National championships was an era called "The Interregnum". This consisted of the 1965, 1966, and 1967 seasons. Which, if my memory is correct were 6-4, 7-4, and 6-4. Unbelievably horrible seasons when you consider the 11-0 seasons of 63 and 69
as bookends.
We were not in the information age during this time frame, so nobody really new why we slipped into these mediocre performances. Today we know everything about the coaches, players, recruits and everybody else associated with the program and are allowed to speculate and vent when things go wrong....which is a good thing, to a point.

It's great to support the horns and vent our frustrations....and most assuredly, the criticism on this fabulous site are very astute, but remember this, The University of Texas is a quality institution and always will be. You're never going to see a Barry Switzer type coach at Texas. Never.

Our coaches may allow players to underperform at times, or may not have the fastest adjustments and schemes as appear to be needed, but Texas is a proud school who will always run a quality program and we will win our share of championships.

BE PROUD THAT YOU ARE PART OF IT !

Very true MeatchickenHorn

Back then you were lucky to get on TV once a year and now we bitch when they don't have the PPV game in our area.  How the game has changed, back then there was no world wide leader, schollies were unlimited, you did not know much about your foe because you couldn't get their stats and observations like you can now on the Interweb.  Now it's all about the money.  CF has become big time and more is demanded.  Fred would have been gone in '84 if we had all of the above.  Can you imagine the blogs duing that time frame? The agros fired RC and I do not even think he had a losing season.

PS - I told somebody I was going to meatchicken on business and you would not believe the initial look I got.  I had to talk real slow before they got it.

Peace and good to see ya back.

How True

I remember that era as well, being a native Austinite, I was 7 in '69 and 8 in '70... I will never forget those days.  I actually have a Texas Longhorns Football Banquet program from 1970, where I went around to all the players and got them to sign it.  I have it framed now.  My uncle played for Texas in the 50's before going on to the Colts in the Pros, and I also actually grew up with Danny Akers as my friend in elementary school and played HS ball with him.  I am an alum as well.

I have always been proud of the Longhorns no matter what... through all the good and bad times as far as wins and losses go.  Sure I have been disgusted, and elated at different times, but I do always remember that we do an excellent institution.  Thanks for your post.  I could not have said any of it better myself.

Hook'em Horns forever.
