Midweek Optimism

To lay the groundwork: I didn't see the game. I didn't see any high(low)lights of the game. All I know is what has been written here on BON, the Longhorn Scripture as far as I'm concerned.

As was the case with most of BON, I was a bit concerned when I read all of the commentary about the Arkie St. game. And I've been stewing about it.

This morning, however, I had a revelation. I woke up, jumped in the shower and as soon as the hot water hit my head I thought, "What if Mack and the boys were just sandbagging? What if what happened on Saturday was one of the greatest displays of psychological warfare that CFB has yet seen?" What better way to get the mental upper-hand on your opponents than to make them think that you're going to be a pushover?

I don't know, that's what I'm going with until Saturday proves me right or wrong. And I'll be able to enjoy the next couple of days. Hope y'all can too.

Hook Em.

Unintentional sandbagging maybe

but your point isn't that crazy.  No matter what Gary Patterson says, his players have heard all the talk about how Texas struggled mightily against Arkansas State.  It's human nature to let that sink in a little bit.  In a game of inches every little psychological edge matters, and I think after the past weekend it's on our side, at least at opening kickoff.  Colt and the boys have to feel like they have something to prove, while TCU's "giant killer" attitude had to be subdued a bit after Texas looked not so giant last weekend.  We'll see on Saturday.

agreed

We kept our game plan vanilla and Colt had an off night.  We are also getting a feel for how our inexperienced guys react in the game.

Also:
I would like to see the pessimism toned down a little on BON.  It's getting to the point where I don't want to read any of the diaries or responses... and that's just ridiculous.

In the last few days it feels like there are some sooners and aggies on here masquerading as longhorn fans.

Paging Scott the Bull Ware

Re: your last comment, at first I would have thought you were crazy. But then a couple of our adversaries tried to sow discontent in the ranks. And now I wonder...

So take that.

Summing it up

We kept our game plan vanilla and Colt had an off night.

End of argument.

Happy Pills? if so pass some over here bro...

Kahuna, I absolutely LOVE that optimism, but too much can lead to further delusion of an already overly deluded UT fanbase.  We don't need to stoke the fires of Mack as a master of the psychological feint.

I agree that this new/extra game was used at least partially as a tune up for UT much like an NFL team does.  The fact that we didn't get more frosh and 2nd teamers in was evidence of something that went terribly wrong though.

I commented earlier that I 'felt' like we were running a base defense for much of the first half, and that could have been entirely to see how much the DB's could handle AND to not give away any of our newly adopted 'Desert Swarm' blitz packages, but in the end we gave up almost 400 yards of total offense, including an insane amout of passing yards to a self professed running team.  They were in our red zone 5 or 6 times and only from shooting themselves in the foot (literally seeing as their kicker missed two or three makable FG's) did we escape the way of Michigan.

On offense, I think we saw the difference in different OL sets at times.  Some were very effective and others were not so...Colt's missed passes were largely unforced errors and a few times Charles could have had better field vision in following good blocks from the big uglies up front.  Those sort of things are VERY fixable and I look for the offense to bounce back big.

To close and respect the optimism that you boldly put fourth here I will say that most of the blatant problems we saw on Saturday are fixable.  Whether the coaches are able to 'Get'er done!' is the big question.  If the offense can put together sustained drives and give the D a chance to gel and make some plays we will prevail and build alot on a big Win against a ranked opponent.  I fully expect that, and so will take my take a few of those same Happy Pills and hope a leader rises up in burnt orange country to spark the kind of convincing win we deserve to have.

I didn't see the game either

I saw a few highlights. Vacation took me away from opening weekend.

The defense is what scares me the most. Giving up those kind of yards to their offense is a red flag. Texas is only going to win in shootouts.

I'm optimistic about the offense, but unless Mack decides to make wholesale lineup changes on defense, this year will be a repeat of 06.

Vanilla

I think it is a valid argument that the team, both offense and defense were "vanilla" on Saturday.  Let's get real about one thing--did anybody who watched that game really feel that Texas was in any danger of a Michigan-App State--I was there and I sure didn't.  I saw lots of things that concern me but until the end of the 1st or 2nd quarter against TCU, it is just too early to be getting down on our team or drawing any worth-while conclusions. There are, however, 2 exceptions.  It has been said so many times that it is getting old but we all know that Foster and Palmer were exposed for what they really are on Saturday--I'd like to believe that was evident to the coaches as well.  Second, we need to work on the "inside the 5" running game.  I know this sounds overly simplistic but in my humble opinion, it's just too early for most judgments.  If Colt has even an low-average game against ASU the score is MUCH different.  I don't know about ya'll, but I know Colt will be back and in a NASTY way on Saturday.  We'll just have to hope that EARLY in the game we see some of the young DBs in the game and WHEN (not if) we're inside the 5, we see "Ogbonnaya" or "Lokey" on the back of one of the jerseys in the backfield.  Mack Brown, MAKE IT SO!!!

I was there too, and

we do have some serious issues, precisely the very ones that have been identified in BON for a long while. The linebacking and play in the secondary were terrible, and I think I have now come around to the camp that says get the fast, athletic young defenders out there. That said, I'm confident that things are under control and that we'll see marked improvement Sat. Here's to a rousing win.

I never will forget ol' what's-his-name.

Agreed

Don't get me wrong, there needs to be MUCHO tweaking for us to be competative in the Big 12 (and the NC picture)--just reads like some feel that UT is on the verge of collapse.  We will know before the end of the 1st half what and how bad most of our issues are BUT, until then, I just think it is too early.  The one exception is the DBs--we all know already--it has been reviewed ad nauseam.  Akina, with all the talent that has passed through him at that position, knows how to coach at that position--so you have to believe that some favorable changes are in order there.  As for the linebackers, more Muck, and Kindle is coming back in 2 games...but we'll just have to see........

Hmm

Are we going to win? We better beat TCU.

Having been

at the Michigan/App State game, I was happy to get away with the win, not happy with the performance because UT doesnt just win against "patsies" as some have called them, we dominate.  Period.

Here is what I do have to say though.  A lot of people here have been acting like we lost and all hope for this new season are gone.  To these people I say, you should have seen the looks of the Michigan fans in Ann Arbor.  106,000 people rooting for the Blue were silenced and 3,000 people from Boone, NC took over the Big House.  Unlike UM, we live to fight another day and hopefully after this weekend optimism will reign once again.

Keep your heads up Longhorn fans, it could be much worse...

Especially

after such a weird weekend.  Friday night, the near perfect game, Saturday App States win, and a no hitter.  It was just a weird weekend in sports.
