Jan 1st Bowl game thoughts - so far

Happy to see Missouri piss pound the trailer trash piggies. I only wish Houston Nutt would have been on the sideline to endure the humiliation.

Missouri will be a force next season.

I cannot wait for the Horns to demolish the piggies next year.

How in the hell did Tech come back to beat Virginia?

I know Tech tends to fall in the same pattern every year, but they have 18 starters returning next year. Ouch. And we go to Lubbock. Ouch.

Secret to beating tech

Make Harrell scramble in his own end zone.

how many starters...

are returning for us next year? I know we are for sure only losing one on offense, but what about on defense?

by dutchhorn on Jan 1, 2008 6:48 PM CST reply actions

Returning starters

Technically, UT returns 10 starters (lose Nate Jones, Tony Hills) on offense and 4 on defense (lose Lokey, Okam, Derry, Killebrew, Jackson, Griffin, Foster) for a total of 15. However, the replacements at LB and perhaps even at S and CB should be upgrades over this year by game 3, so UT may play more like they have 18 starters returning.

Technically

We are also losing Limas, although one could argue that already happened.

My kid may have given up a costly fumble against OU, but at least he's never been accused of face raping.

Aggy is now questioning

whether they really want Arky DC Herring (after his piggies laid down for Mizzou):

Should they just keep _arnell?

Good stuff.

Mizzou

I would've loved to see this team against USC.

But noooooo... stupid Rose Bowl tradition forces us to watch Illinois get stomped.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 1, 2008 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Totally Agree

You can't take KU to the BCS over Mizzou.  Just can't.

Look at these games today.

UTenn vs. the Vadge-ers:
OK, I hate Wisconsin for reasons I don't fully understand, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the game.  Both teams played well and the game came down to the last play.  Good game.

Meatchicken vs. Flo-rIdah:
Wow!  Even though this completely killed my Bowl Pick 'em ballot, (I picked Florida, 31 confidence) this was a great game.  I found myself rooting for Michigan once I saw how bad they wanted to win that game.  Henne and Hart played a hell of a game, and Michigan's defense, while outclassed in the speed category (They're still chasing Percy Harvin, sorry Big 10), developed a devilish pressure package that, coupled with the Heisman curse, bottled up Tebow for good chunks of the game.  Great game, Hart fumbled twice.

Just Va vs. Lubbock Buccaneers:
Any other team and this is a stunning comeback win.  But after the Minnesota comeback last year, this seems a little cheap.  Good game, though.  You don't often see two safeties in one game.  And that Chris Long kid is the real deal.  Super disruptive.

Mizz-used vs. Run DMC and co:
Dominance from Mizzou.  Definitely deserved to play in the...

Rose Bowl
Spoiled Children U vs. The Juice (from Concentrate):
Waste of everyone's time.  The Rose Bowl is in the bowl doghouse for passing up Mizzou for what amounts to a really good Aggie team.  Total dominance from USC, sigh.  This just shows how far behind the Big 10 is.  Run a spread-esque running game in that festering heap of a conference, beat the conference champion, get to the Rose Bowl, get destroyed by a defense from the modern era.  Granted that defense is a really good one, but let's throw something challenging into its teeth, please?

Sugar Bowl or WAC Super Bowl
Rainbow Brights vs. Chainsaw-Dicked Stormtroopers from Hell:
I'm writing this in the first third of the fourth quarter, if that tells you how good a game this was...  Can't really blame the Sugar Bowl, though, as they were forced to take Hawaii.  This game just made you feel bad to watch.  Touchdown Hawaii! 41-10!  Oh... then UGA almost runs back a TD on the kickoff.  What a beating.  UGA's DEs just run around Hawaii's tackles on every play.  I think they're holding some kind of contest to see who can launch Brennan the farthest when they get there.

So basically, the worst two games on TV are the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl.  Thank you Rose Bowl selection committee, and thank you WAC for letting Hawaii pillow fight you to death all year.  Those were sarcastic thank yous.  Just letting you know because you're both obviously retarded.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Jan 1, 2008 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Just so we are on the same page...

Technically not the Rose Bowl's fault that Mizzou is not there.  BCS does not allow 3 teams from the same conference to play in BCS games.  Now it is totally the Rose Bowl's fault that there is a huge mismatch, however.  Would have loved to see USC vs. Georgia.

by ctex80 on Jan 2, 2008 6:45 AM CST up reply actions

The Rose Bowl got to pick before the Orange

Because they had Ohio State lost to the title game.  They could have taken Mizzou, leaving KU out of the picture.  That would have been fair.  Rose couldn't have taken Georgia without the Sugar's permission, since they're from LSU's conference.  All the rules are here.

I think the relevant rule is under Team Selection Procedures, Rule 3.C

This means that the Rose Bowl is at fault for not making USC play Mizzou, thus giving them an easy cupcake game in which to look like super-freaks.  I think ESPN's secret keyphrase that they say without saying is "they're the number 1 team after all!"  Disgusting.

Alternatively, the Sugar Bowl could have let the Rose take Georgia, and then taken Mizzou or the Illini to play Hawaii.  That would have at least been not Colt Brennan getting laid out on one play, propped up to take the snap on the next, and then promptly laid out again.  Who had any worries that evil motivational super-genius Mark Richt would have the Dawgs up to play for this one?  Especially after Boise last year.  The BCS should strive to avoid total beatings.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Jan 2, 2008 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

And what sux about the Rose Bowl this year...

is that they didn't even ASK the Sugar for permission to take UGA. They might have gotten them, too, as there is apparently great consideration given to such requests. There is no guarantee that the Sugar would have granted the release, but the Rose Bowl muckety-mucks didn't... even... ask.

I know the BCS keeps rationalizing that the only stated objective is to match up #1 and #2, but as long as we do not have a playoff, they should also try to get the best matchups in the remaining BCS games. The Rose Bowl forfeited its "tradition" when it signed onto the BCS imo.

toughest schedule in the nation?

The Horns will be a candidate for one of the toughest schedules in the nation, by virtue of the Big 12 being on par with the SEC as the toughest conference. The Horns will face 9 bowl teams, including two non-conference bowl teams, and perhaps five teams ranked in the top 25 (and maybe even top 10) at the time UT plays them (OU, Missouri, Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State). After 1 October, 5 straight tough games, 4 against ranked teams. The season finishes with a road game at Kansas and home against A&M, which, when you haven't beaten them in two years, constitutes a tough game. A&M could also be ranked, if new coach Sherman is the real deal. The best that can be said about the schedule is that UT doesn't play KState, and that if the Horns win, the BCS computers will love them. Next year's team could be significantly better than this year's but have the same record and results.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC - a rising mid-major that just won the New Orleans Bowl and has a good coach, Howard Schnellenberger

at UTEP
not a strong team and should be an easy win, but it's on the road. Should be easier than the UCF game from this year.

ARKANSAS
new coach (Petrino), new system, SEC athletes - should be a win, but only if the players are ready to play

RICE
thank goodness for those Southwest Conference traditions

at Colorado
an improving very young team that beat Oklahoma and Tech and played Kansas tough. Always tough at home because of the altitude.

vs. Oklahoma (Dallas)
Likely the # 1 team in the country at game time

MISSOURI
Would have played for the MNC in 2007 if they could figure out how to beat Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA STATE
Lots of talent and always seem to get way up on the Horns in the first half. Maybe UT has their number, or maybe, like a cat, the team's "nine lives" have been used up.

at Texas Tech
This will be the toughest game for Texas to win all year (yes tougher than OU)

BAYLOR
A trap game if there ever was one after five tough, critical games in a row before this one; luckily it's at home.

at Kansas
Even if Kansas drops off a bit from this year with the loss of some defensive starters, they're still likely to be ranked. The whole Todd Reesing story will have this game and KU fans at a fever pitch.

TEXAS A&M
When you have lost this game when you should have won for the last two years, it might as well be the OU game in terms of intensity

Prediction (no injuries to Charles or McCoy)
Upset OU, beat Missouri, Kansas and aTm, lose to Tech. Tech will lose to OU AFTER beating Texas, resulting in a 3-way tie for first in the south. By virtue of its win over Kansas (after OU, perhaps the most critical game), Texas should have the higher BCS ranking and win the South championship. Texas beats Missouri in Big 12 championship. Who knows where that will put them in the MNC sweepstakes.

With any major injuries to the most key players, Texas could easily lose 3 more games and be sucking wind in the Alamo Bowl.

keep in mind...

tech did some pretty nasty shit in their 06 bowl game too, and Texas still whipped their ass.

Horizontalism is its own reward.

by SuperBentley on Jan 1, 2008 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

Bye week before Colorado

Texas does get a breather between the Rice game Sept. 20 and the CU game Oct. 4.

With nearly two-week break before the A&M game, that will result in only seven consecutive games as compared to 12 straight the last two years.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 1:14 AM CST up reply actions

Something about Tech

Look, they're a fine team. Crazy offense that would probably upset a lot of BCS teams from other conferences. But we just freakin own that team.

Even this year, the final score doesn't tell you how much we dominated them. Until their defense decides to do anything consistently productive, they are not an issue to me. Same goes with Oklahoma State.

Harrell is a douche bag and karma is a bitch.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 1:34 AM CST up reply actions

ownership

If you believe in "ownership," then Texas will lose to OU and aTm again. I projected with a more optimistic view. I agree with you that Tech is the better team because of its defensive deficiencies. I just think the combination of road game, super fired up crowd, the fact that Tech might be undefeated going in, but mostly the continuity of Harrell to Crabtree, coupled with big question marks at safety for Texas make this a game that will be tough to win.

I agree Texas pounded Tech on offense at home, but our defense was worn out by halftime. With even some improvement in the Tech defense, the game could come down to the last play.

I agree that Oklahoma State will not beat Texas, but it will still require considerable emotional intensity to win.

Hawaii SUCK

Hawaii just showed what a sucky team they are. They have sucked all season, they have been just lucky and played a horrible schedule. It's a total shame that they even played in a BCS bowl.

Hehe, here is my prediction of the Hawaii some time back: Hawaii suck

In Mack & Rick We Trust.

by Cyrus on Jan 2, 2008 2:16 AM CST reply actions

Credit to you, you called it

Whoops, my call for Hawaii to be in the title game is not looking so good today...even worse, the BCS feels justified that it has fixed the problem (or at least appeased it) by designating a token bowl for any Mid-Major who finishes undefeated without ever really giving them a legit shot at the title. I'm not going to defend Hawaii's SOS or any mid-major team for that matter, but if you don't even have a shot, what's the point?

Boise State made huge strides for Mid-Major legitimacy last year and Hawaii just set them back 20 years...I wasn't surprised that Georgia won the game, but I figured it would be like a 42-38 type game.

Regardless, is anybody going to be satisfied that the winner of the OSU (lost to an Illinois team that just got handled by USC who probably should have been in the title game) vs. LSU (Lost to an Arkie team at home that was without their coach for the Mizzou game but still looked painfully inept) is true National Champion?

I'll be interested to see how the AP votes when it's all said and done. They love sticking it to the BCS.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

usc

I'm curious to see how many first place votes usc will get in the final AP rankings.  I wonder if the voters can distinguish between the best finish to a season and the best season.   Being a (mythical) national champion means you were the best team that season, not the best team from Nov 1 onward.

We'll see how many voters think the transitive property is a valid reason to vote the way they do.

Insult to injury

You get your ass handed to you by Georgia. Then word gets out that SMU is willing to pay $1.7M to steal your coach. Sucks to be a Rainbow Warrior right now.

BTW, how sad is it that both Coach Fran and Larry Coker interviewed for the SMU job and didn't get it?

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

Retarded Argument

The No. 7 Trojans are better than both No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 LSU, which will play for the BCS championship Monday night in the Louisiana Superdome. The Buckeyes couldn't even beat No. 13 Illinois, which was so clearly overmatched by USC. It's a shame the Trojans can't play the winner of the BCS title game in two weeks.

By that logic, Stanford is the best team in the nation, as they beat USC, who beat Illinois, who beat Ohio St.  Later in the article, USC's linebacker even said that was stupid:

"It's hard to say what would happen," USC offensive tackle Sam Baker said, when asked how the Trojans would stack up against the Buckeyes or Tigers. "You can't really do that. You can't say Illinois beat Ohio State and we beat Illinois. That's not how football works. I just know this team was peaking at the right time."

Ahhh

There just nothing like purely subjective reasoning to debate a topic.

A > B > C > D = E

by Shake on Jan 2, 2008 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

I got it ...

La-Monroe beat Alabama
Alabama (who crushed Tennessee) beat Arkansas
Arkansas beat LSU in Baton Rouge

OR

App St beat Michigan
Michigan beat Notre Dame
Notre Dame beat Stanford
Stanford beat USC

App St lost to Wofford

OR

Iowa St beat Iowa
Iowa beat Illini
Illini beat OSU

Apples beat Oranges
Oranges beat Pears
Pears beat Apples

"Excuse me while I whip this out."

by FreedomDip on Jan 2, 2008 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

and don't forget

Northern Iowa (1-AA) beat Iowa State....
...so UNI beat ISU
...ISU beat Iowa
...Iowa beat Illini
...Illini beat OSU

therefore Northern Iowa could beat Ohio State?!!??!

by UTHorns on Jan 2, 2008 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

Nice

Now everyone is catching on to how this is done.  It really is the most sound type of logic, isn't it.
