Open Game Day Thread: Texas @ Missouri

The 'Horns tip off play today at 12:45 with a road trip to Missouri. The Tigers (10-5) are in their second season under head coach Mike Anderson and are improved from a season ago. All eyes today on Gary Johnson, who will need to help on the interior to give Augustin and Abrams some breathing room on the perimeter; the Tigers lead the nation in 3-point field goal defense (25.9%).

Missouri pressing

I'm listening on radio, but sounds like we handled it very well first time.

4-1 Texas early.

at least for Mizzou

they don't have the athletes to do that.  Might be a different story if say Kansas presses us.

Just got home

Keys today.

  1. Play in control.
  1. Limit turnovers.
  1. Control Carrol on the low blocks and on the glass.

12-8 at first tv break

James with at least 8 pts but just picked up a questionable foul.  Very quick, up and down pace early.

Nice fade away. Easy layup for AJ as Gary Johnson set a great screen on the block.

Eek

Adjustments needed. I'm happy to be up by 2.

Our offense is pretty damn explosive, but my goodness do we not handle tough, pressure defense very well.

The young kids are struggling a bit right now - welcome to the Big 12. Even so, Wingman and Johnson gave us some decent minutes.

Our defense is same old same old.

Johnson? Solid minutes?

I disagree. I was more impressed with Dexter the Molester in his few minutes than I was with Johnson. We need either DJ or GJ to get hot in the 2nd half or we're going to have an uglier 2nd half.

by apagne on Jan 12, 2008 1:37 PM CST reply actions

Lucky to be up 40-38 at half

Foul trouble for James and Connor derailed any chance of blowing the Tigers out in the first half.

DJ playing ok but pressing some without his weapons late in the first half. James has been unstoppable. And, shockingly, Barnes gets some decent low post play from Wingman and Pittman.

Defense has not been good. Missouri getting way too many open looks from three and Horns getting outhustled for long rebounds.

Second half, need to find shooters, rebound long misses, and keep Damion on the floor.

--AW--

by awiggo on Jan 12, 2008 1:38 PM CST reply actions

Looks like I did underestimate them

I did not see Mizzou making two more threes than us, and Augustin is having another ineffective game so far. 1-7FG and 0-3 3pt. Keon Lawrence? Basically, shooting by James and Abrams are saving our asses.

That new postgame we got with Johnson? Totally nonexistant. Mizzou has been playing zone and we can't attack it other than DJ penetration. We're not getting the ball to Johnson, and we can't go inside in general. Sad to see that that Wingman and Pittman both have 1 more FG than Johnson (zero).

And once again, Connor has completely disappeared on offense. What happened?

They don't have the +/- stat in college, but I bet James' +/- is ridiculous. It's too bad that he got in foul trouble. That was another killer.

James starts out 2nd half cold

He saved us in the 1st half, but if he and Abrams don't shoot well in the 2nd half, this could be a blowout on Mizzou's side.

Just gave Tigers another poss after kicking ball out of bounds.

Another test for the young Horns in their first conference game. Down ten in the second half. How do we respond?

Offense so flat

Big disappointment on all sides. Only having 9 assists so far reflects that. They have 18 assists.

I'll take solace that in the tournament, the games for the most part are on neutral courts. There's no doubt that the crowd is feeding this team. 12 threes already.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 12, 2008 2:36 PM CST reply actions

Missouri has done a great job

taking away DJ's penetration. Augustin with just 12 points. We still don't run a true motion offense and rely heavily on Augustin's ability to create and distrbute. Missouri's zone and help defense have been very good this afternoon.

We stayed in the game in the first half because of Damion's hot shooting. As James went cold and Missouri got hot, the Tigers began to pull away.

Tough start to conference play.

If we go 7-1 at home and 5-3 on the road, we'll be 12-4 and finish second or third in the Big XII.

With no KD, limited depth, small guards, and not getting Gary until just last week, let's take a second to set reasonable expectations.

The sky is not falling.

We ran into a hot shooting team who played very well this afternon, while we struggled to defend, penetrate, and rebound and will have to get better in lots of areas to be an elite team.

The sky is not falling.

it really feels like it is

with the way mizzou is knocking down threes

Agree

This is a good Missouri team.

And we have plenty of room to play better. But this HAS been a particularly frustrating loss - the ugliness has been hard to watch. The defense is awful. The offense has a long way to go.

but thats the point

we havent been able to defend, penetrate against quality opponents all year. this has to be the worst defensive team i have ever seen in my life. some high schools play better d than this. every single defender leaves his feet to block shots, no one gets in passing lanes, no one challenges shots, nobody other than damion goes hard to the glass. gj is soft. connor doesnt get the rock enough...and on...

I guess you missed

the games against Tenn, UCLA, Oral Roberts, and St. Mary's.

Sky not falling

but for the fans that hope for an Elite 8/Final 4 appearance, it worries me that we're a hot shooting team or a great physical defensive team away from getting knocked out.

Even in March, will our perimeter defense really improve by a lot compared to now? I doubt it. The only aspects that can really improve are offense/defense from the frontcourt with Johnson, and a more fluid offense.

Before the year,

I thought this was a top 20-25 team without Gary Johnson, and a top 10-15 team with him.

Even after this performance, I'll stick with those predictions. Gary just joined the team in January. It is going to take him some time to get up to speed and gel with the other four starters.

i hear you

this defense kind of reminds me of akina's: horrible lol

by TEXASFIGHT on Jan 12, 2008 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Hey now

We're a good basketball team. With room to improve. Temper your expectations a bit...

very true

this team is still really young,
and they have alot of season left to get better

by blazzinken on Jan 12, 2008 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

WTF is JD Lewis doing in the game

Barnes must've already given up. He's the human victory cigar... for the other team.

Good thing about conference play

is we don't have to spend a full week to agonize over a loss... except for this loss. Shit!

It's Colorado next Saturday at home.

Yup

It's the defense that's the problem right now.

The offense is more or less fine. Free throws were ugly today, and we're a bit out of sync with these new lineups, but it's fine overall.

The defense, though, has to improve dramatically.

Another desperate comeback

led by an AJ three. Now if only we made those FTs...

by goingforthecorner on Jan 12, 2008 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Losing by 11, and we've missed 11 FTs

And I guess at least 1 or 2 of them were front end of a 1 and 1

Yuck

Good win for Mizzou - very solid team. Mike Anderson's a good coach.

Time to work on our defense...

A little motion on offense wouldn't kill us, either.

I fail at predictions

I thought we would've won in a blowout. LOL. Instead we lost in what was basically a blowout.

I said we had to make our threes and FTs. I thought that would be enough because I saw Mizzou was a 30-something % 3pt shooter. Wow.

We gave up 97 points in 40 minutes of basketball. Just terrible. I don't remember the last team that won a championship with bad defense.

Sure, we are definitely capable of improving the offense, like getting Connor and Johnson more involved, more ball movement, more motion, better 3pt and FT shooting.

But if our defense continues to play this horribly, especially our perimeter defense, I'm worried about another disappointing finish in the tournament. Just hope that we play teams we matchup well against in the Big Dance.

someone tell me

how we won at ucla??? they are whipping wash st right now and we just got it handed to us.

by TEXASFIGHT on Jan 12, 2008 3:02 PM CST reply actions

as bad as this loss was

we know we can be great because of that win, but it does seem like a year ago that we won at pauly pavilion

That Win Is

beginning to look more and more like a lucky win by UT than an indication of how good they are.  They are not.  UT had some lucky non-conference wins, but losing to Wisconsin at home and now Mizzou on the road exposes how pretty average this squad is.  The thing that sucks about it is that those lucky wins against UCLA and Tennessee gave us fans hope that the Horns were better than they really are.  Fact is they'll be lucky to win their first game in the NCAA's.  I hate being fooled like we all were by those wins.

LOL

Enough with the doom and gloom attitude. We're not that bad. Lucky or not, we've played a tough schedule and we got some quality wins. In the tournament, we don't play at our opposing team's home court.

And Gary Johnson will be a force by the time March comes around, and the offense should be much improved. I hope the defensive intensity will be improved.

We have D.J. Augustin, and Damion James is looking like a beast. Durant won Big 12 POY last year, and James could very well win it this year.

We Are

Pretenders, not Contenders.  Another early round exit from the NCAA's on tap for this crew.  They have 15 more games to change my mind, but I am not hopeful for this squad.  If they had another year under their belt to stay together I'd be hopeful for next year, but with the lure of the NBA surely going to take at least one, maybe two of our starters even the prospect of next season remains dim.

We have a solid squad under Barnes every season, but national championship caliber teams - not!  I'm just mad at myself for even thinking that's what we had this year after that UCLA win.  I feel like a schmuck for believing.

The tournament is in March

so like you said, 15 more games. There's really no point making a conclusion about the team in the middle of January, especially with their starting PF just now starting to play minutes.

If anything, the victories over Tennessee and UCLA should show you the team's potential.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 12, 2008 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

Barnes is fuming in postgame radio show

Brutally honest to say the least. He's very upset at the lack of energy on defense. Players not following his instructions before the game.

He's very disappointed at Johnson's defense. He told GJ the same thing he told Wangmene, Chapman, and Pittman. If you don't play defense, you won't play. Sad to think that Johnson could be in that category. I thought he would be an instant boost to our defense.

He has no explanation for the free throw disaster, especially considering that a lot of the misses came from DJ and AJ. He also said something about leadership, so I'm guessing he's pointing to those same guys.
