Breaking: Applewhite To Interview At Texas?
Applewhite, a former standout quarterback for the Longhorns, joined Nick Saban’s staff this year after becoming the youngest coordinator in Division I football at Rice in 2006. There, his spread offense smashed a number of school records including points (350), and gained 4,486 yards.
Oh, my.

I LOVE THIS OFFSEASON!!!
Let it last, please! The last thing I want is for all this optimism to be crushed in Dallas.
What happens in the offseason, stays in the offseason.

What Deloss said
As I said it in an earlier post, Deloss mentioned to a couple of us in the front row of the OZone that he was going to make another big hire in next couple weeks.

Yowsah.
If that's the case, then our offensive flavor goes from Orange Sherbet to super fudge chocolate brownie chunk. With whipped cream, and a cherry.

What would his official title be?
I have trouble believing that Applewhite would be brought in to replace GD and immediately coach the offense, but I also have trouble believing he would take a demotion a become a co-coordinator or qb coach. Unless he would be hired with a wink and a nod that he's going to take the reins soon enough, I don't really understand what his position would be. Regardless, I'm psyched.

He's already splitting game planning
at Alabama.
Check out the AAS article from my other comment. Last paragraph.
Wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

He is already a co-coordinator at Bama
and he always talks to GD anyways, so I think being named to the same position here would be fine. He'll surely have the OC job soon, maybe even HC depepding on how long Mack decides to keep coaching.

hope he's as good as advertised
i loved applewhite as a player, despite his physical limitations. has major really proved himself to be an offensive genius? don't mean to rain on the parade here. any change has got to be better than another season of greg davis. how is this going to work anyway? co-OCs?
btw, kudos to mack on the new DC hire.

He wouldn't be named RB coach, would he?
i can definitely see co-OC, but I didn't think he would be a RB coach...

How many fans reading about Major's return...
just let out a Back Street Boy concert scream?
Major is going to need bodygaurds to protect him and intercept the boxers/briefs thrown by fanboys at the coaches booth.
I love the guy and all -- but come'on. Control yourself people.

No
The turtle-like GD will take over there.
"Now, Darrell/Vondrell/Fozzy, I really think you could have run a little more towards the sidelines on that last run. Remember our motto: Horizontalism is its own reward. I read that in The Art of War. That's for real, homie."

If he is interviewing...
he is coming. They wouldn't let an official "interview" leak unless he was coming; I think the interview is just a formality. The whole thing has been orchestrated beautifully by Mack Brown. As far as his value, I don't know about his X's & O's but I think he will bring a passionate leadership to the offensive side of the ball that is missing (the same thing that Muschamp brings to the defense). Having him on the field and GD in the sky would be great - he would be there to interact personally with Colt and the offense when things go awry.
As far as some rift with Mack Brown - who would you rather work for? Brown or Saban? A no-brainer.

The question of why would he leave
an OC position in the SEC to come take an RB job at Texas is a good one. Possible answers:
- He will get co-OC title at Texas and feels like that may be a better stepping stone towards a HC job. Unlikely as I would think a full-fledged OC job at Bama under Saban is just as likely to vault you into a HC job.
- He was dissatisfied with sharing offensive game plan duties with Pendry at Alabama. Unlikely as he won't be calling the plays here.
- He likes Austin and would like to come back and spend a little more time studying under Greg Davis.
- A fourth possibility, and one that seems to be getting some play on Bama message boards is that this is a mutually agreed upon decision with Saban. Is he being forced out? Unlikely, as he was a candidate for the Houston job last month and took his name out of consideration.
I don't know the reason but I do know he would be a great addition to our staff and to the guys on the team.

You left one out
Saban is notoriously difficult to work for; Brown is not. If you can make the same money working for Brown at your alma-mater and you are only 29 years old, and you can live in Austin, why not?
