Re:

It's a calculated risk for Charles. One the one hand, there looks to be a glut of running backs available that Charles will most likely fall behind: McFadden, Felix Jones, Mendenhall, and Stewart. I haven't heard ANY discussion from the pundits about Charles entering the draft, whereas those guys have been hyped and have been thought to declare for a while. If Charles is indeed ranked behind those 4, I don't see how the advisory committee could've projected him as a first rounder. Had he stayed, another great year could've bumped him up to top half of first round.

On the other hand, he's probably looking back at Mack's track record and seeing that it's not so great. The recent Longhorns that stayed for their senior seasons during Charles' tenure were Rod Wright (who did win a Championship, but fell to the 7th round), Frank Okam (from the looks of it, he may have cost himself a round or two from staying...we'll see), and Limas Sweed (still has first round projection, but spent the entire season injured). Moreover, Charles plays at currently one of the least valuable positions in the NFL. If I'm him, I'm getting to the league as SOON as possible (which I think ALL running backs should do) in order to get as many pro touches as I can. The more carries a running back gets in college is less carries he'll be able to withstand in the pros, which is why I think Kevin Smith is an idiot for staying (note: this is not actually a proven fact, but I think it's pretty accurate).

To sum up, had Charles stayed, UT's offense would definitely have been better, and he could've boosted his draft stock some. As it stands, he's getting an extra year's paycheck, and if stories are correct, will be picked up in the first or second round. Not much more you can ask for there.

Thanks to Jamaal for a fantastic three years in burnt orange, and I'll be rooting for him at the next level. Here's hoping the Texans pick him up, so I'll finally have a damn Longhorn to root for at 12:00 on CBS Sundays.

Lastly, Malcolm Kelly, Duke Robinson, Reggie Smith, et al, need to declare already so we can get some good news to counter this sad piece of information.

He does not want to get injured like older bro

He was not all that happy this season.

Being a millionaire at age 21 is kind of cool, too.

I doubt anything but those 3 factors entered his mind.

Good luck. This will make 5 current Horn RBs in the NFL.

It's a long list

Darren McFadden
Felix Jones
Kevin Smith
Matt Forte
Ray Rice
Mike Hart
Rashard Mendenhall
Jonathan Stewart
Steve Slaton
Ian Johnson

Hell even Dantrell Savage might go ahead of Jamaal. This could be an embarassing draft day for the young man.

That all might be true

but, you know, speed is the NFL mantra - and speed with the kind of acceleration JC has is relatively rare. Your list will be shaken up after the first NFL camp. There are some better runners there and definitely some tougher inside runners.

Several teams are becoming like the C'boys, with a power runner and a speed runner. JC fits that second back speed asset very well.

But it is possible he could slide way down if things fall poorly for him.

With the incredible injury toll of some NFL teams this season, I wouldn't be surprised if the roster limit expands by two to four players. You gotta keep a viable product on the field, and it doesn't seem likely that they're going to cut the game total down.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 3:44 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ugh..

Felix Jones hasn't declared, nor would be go ahead of Charles. Same for Ray Rice and Steve Slaton, hell even Ian Johnson is average at best. These are good college RBs, not NFL players.

As is stands today, Charles is the #4 back on most boards.

McFadden
Mendenhall
Stewart
Charles
Choice
Forte'
Hart

Thank you.

I'm not sure why anyone would be down on JC. He or Chris Johnson (ECU) will run the fastest 40 times of any RB in the class. He's shown great vision, look at him down the stretch in 2007 or 2005 seasons. He hasn't been injured, in trouble or anything other than a team player. The only knock in his game is that he has had a small fumbling problem in '07, but it was limited to a few games. He's also played primarily in a shotgun set the last two years, but Selvin Young is doing okay coming from the same system, and I think we can all agree who the better back is out of the two.

Charles will also kill it at the combine...

least we not forget that the cattle call that IS the NFL Combine, where good players are often demoted on silly intangibles and other players stock rise high on their ability to generate nice stats...unless someone pegs Jamaal with the dreaded 'small hands' tag like our boy Ricky 'got weed?' Williams; I think Jamaal will improve his stock at the combine and do well.

someone obviously convinced him of that even though he was not being mentioned alot by the talking heads that sound byte the top three at each postion and act like everyone else is a far down the line.

anyone know who JC's lined up as an agent?

MacDuff

Also in the ESPN article...

Texas also announced Wednesday that assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Larry Mac Duff, who spent one season on coach Mack Brown's staff, has also decided to leave. Mac Duff joined the Texas staff after spending four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

That's welcome news to some, I'm sure, but I'm reading this as Akina's going to be sticking around. Otherwise,  I'd have thought that Mack would've let them BOTH go on the same day. With only half the combo gone, I'm betting on Akina still being the DC next year....thoughts?

Probably demoted

There's no way that they would get rid of a position coach who's had two player of the year awards given to his guys.  I'll bet he'll retain the co-DC title but will lose the play-calling duties.  They'll bring in someone else to take on the other co-DC position and give the responsibility to them.

I don't he will be DC

They'll go away a serious change.

I've supported Jerry Gray, who has helped the 'Skins improve this season.

But I get the feeling that the powers that be will want some serious changes for what the Horns must face next year.

A little garbled

No, he won't be DC. They want serious change. DA could stay, though, if there are no great offers out there on the table.

the problem with Gray

is the whole lack of a Masters Degree thing, which UT thinks coaches should have.

Not too much of a stretch

Scott was saying one of the reasons he's leaning towards CU was because he could start as a Freshman. With Charles gone, he could certainly compete for the starting job for 2008. No offense to McGee, but I don't think he's shown enough to be a 30-touch guy. At least not yet.

Nope, he's headed here.

That's what big Nate wants.

It will take NTSU a while to catch up - and with the spread going wild, the defenses may catch up with the Dodge's offense before it can make a big splash.

Newton and Gideon

According to this Blake Gideon and Tre Newton are planning to be roomies when they enroll.

One obstacle he won't have to worry about is getting to know his roommate at UT, as Gideon has been friends with Southlake Carroll product Tre Newton for over nine months now.

Newton, the son of former Dallas Cowboys lineman Nate Newton, met during the UT spring game this year and stayed in contact ever since.

"He's a pretty quiet guy; it's kind of surprising when you first meet him," Gideon said with a laugh. "We get along really well, and our families really like each other, too."

I've said this before...

... Charles is the dumbest 'Horn by far, but he sure can run.  I personally think that this is selfish leaving.  You can't blame Vince for leaving when he was on top of the world, but Jamaal leaving to be a second round pick is foolishness.  He just burned a bunch of money.  Burned it.  I'll miss him, but he doesn't get to be one of my favorite 'Horns any more.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Jan 2, 2008 3:19 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

OK, maybe that was a little harsh

But my point was that you can't blame Vince, as his position couldn't have been any better.  JC, on the other hand, bailed on one more semester of hard work to get the pay check now (still hard work, but the $millions make it easier).  Not to mention he had a chance to become a legend.  I can understand his fear about injury, due to the fact that he almost always had some kind of injury while he was here, so I take back the "dumb" comment (side note, have you heard him talk?).  I really dislike the "I'm probably coming back, I want to do x, y, and z next year," and then "I'll probably go second round, lata bitchez!"  If he wanted the money, he could have gone all Earl Campbell and won the Heisman next year.  I was mad, but now I'm just disappointed.  I can't really be angry with him, but I expected more of him.

I apologize fully for the "dumb" thing, I feel bad about it.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Jan 2, 2008 10:34 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He might be maxed out

in terms of where he'll go in the draft.  Supposedly he's been graded out in the early to mid 2nd round position.  If true, he'd likely not get any higher a position by staying another year.

NFL usually takes "inside-the-tackles" type runners early in the draft and speed backs usually fall to later positions (Reggie Bush an obvious exception but some are already saying he could be a bust).  He's not gonna get any faster.  He's definitely not gonna evolve into a power runner with another year.  I'm disappointed too but this might have been his best decision.  Only time will tell.

Re: Charles as "dumb"

I believe Charles is a business major (if he isn't now, he was as a freshman), which is far from "dumb." It may be a much "easier" major, but it's also a much harder one to get into coming out of high school. Gotta give some respect to the McCombs School of Business.

My adopted kid is pure genius at the Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model.

by jc25 on Jan 2, 2008 4:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Big loss but spring ball will be fun as hell

JC going hurts, & now McGee is the primary handler.  Though largely unproven, he showed flashes of speed and he's capable of getting the tough yardage at the goal line.  I'm fine with Vondrell getting a shot.  One thing that must happen is that Fozzy has got to get a carries steadily through the season. It ought to be a tough battle between these two in spring drills.

Good riddance to McDuff, here's hoping that Mack hires somone who will make a good impact.

Losing Finley would be somewhat painful, although look at what this team did without him getting touches.  The stable at TE is definitely chock full of talent especially with John Marshall.  At one point in fall practices, Mack Brown was so impressed with Marshall that he mistook Marshall for Jermichael Finley.  I expect Finley will not make the same choice Charles made.

John Chiles - I'm your foster daddy!

by BMG on Jan 2, 2008 3:22 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not a good move, IMHO

As others said, this draft is loaded with running backs.  However, JC is likely to have one of those workouts that wow everyone.  I predict a 4th round exit.

JC probably would improve his draft position considerably by returning for another year.  The O-line is one year older, with most of the starters returning.  JC's production, barring injuries, should be better next year which would help his stock considerably.

Good luck JC.  I hope that your decision pans out better than my prognosications.

This is a serious hit, but we'll do fine.

I always thought Jamaal was under/mis-utilized, but I bet he does pretty well in the NFL. Moving on, Mack should immediately catch a plane and put on his sweetest sales pitch ever to Darrell Scott. He wouldn't have to lie, tell Darrell he'll have every chance to earn significant touches. Sounds like that guy is a force.

I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

by Horntod on Jan 2, 2008 3:53 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just as .....

....I said in the Holiday Bowl thread. Now that Jamaal Charles has his bowl game carries under his belt, he is free to head for the NFL. The previous denials were simply intended to insure his carries in the bowl game. Just ask Jevan Snead what happens when your intentions to leave are ferreted out by the staff. He'll be a low 1st round to high 2nd round pick because he can run like the wind. He wasn't going to improve on that position, even if he had a big year next season. This way he puts the money in his pocket one year earlier, doesn't risk injury and doesn't risk being over-utilized like Cedric Benson.

"Philosophical differences" means yet another DC is fleeing the coddling atmosphere. No one can build a disruptive, nasty attitude defense when they aren't allowed to coach with their proven personality.

--- Peter's tired of disabling threads due to the wise-A comments from Wells & BZ, so hopefully they'll refrain from commenting ---

I'm with you on this one

I'm real curious about the definition of "philosophical differences" in this context.  I wonder if Mack was forcing some of the personnel decisions.  Being blamed for KBD while the whole time it was the supervisor's call...yeah, I'd hand in my papers, too.

by Kool Hand on Jan 2, 2008 8:43 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How about a simple thank you

I will simply say thank you Jamaal, we wouldn't have won tOSU game in the Shoe without your catches in the flat. The long run against OU that year was fun too, the fumble this year was not. Still without you, we probably would have gone 7-6 last season.

I've got to believe the reason JC decided to go pro is because the NFL told him he will go high in the draft. Or it could be something that we'll never know like some type of financial hardship has befallen his family and they need the money or perhaps he has fallen out of favor with the University academically (happens more often than you'd think).

I wish him well as he will be missed but still contend that next season will be all about the defense for the Horns. I also think UT can find a running back to fill the void, perhaps not as fast and prolific as JC, but steady and effective none-the-less.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

by AgentBurntOrange on Jan 2, 2008 8:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huge loss

None of the returning RBs affect the game the way he did.  Og rarely runs successfully.  Vondrell showed some nice glimpses, but we still don't know much about him.  And the unproven recruits are just that.  Darrell Scott could salvage the running game.

This is a huge loss for Texas.  It is the beginning of a snowball effect.  Up until Vince, Mack had a perfect record for retaining seniors, but even VY stayed for four years.  JC breaks the mold by breaking away after just three years.  He was underutilized in 2006.  How many times did you ask yourself, why is Selvin getting all these carries?  It was a recurring theme.  The seniority-over-meritocracy mode of personnel decision making will engender resentment among other under-utilized super talents.  It will not surprise me to see juniors of the future going pro.

by Kool Hand on Jan 2, 2008 8:56 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well said, Kool Hand

Charles was UT's one proven, consistent offensive weapon, and is probably an even bigger loss than losing McCoy would be since McCoy was so inconsistent this year.  Talking about all the "potential" talent UT has a RB either on the team or possibly to be recruited, does not make me feel any better.  (A bird in the hand...etc).  You can argue whether or not this was the best decision for Charles, but for UT fans, any way you slice it, this sucks!
