Around SBN: Five Sleeper Teams To Watch Bar-right-arrows

Texas vs TCU game thread

I know today has been dominated by unfortunate football news, but today is Gary Johnson day.

Star-divide

A.J. Abrams is out with a twisted foot. This is a blessing in disguise, not that I think Abrams is worthless to the team, but I want to see just how good of a team we can be defensively.

The starting lineup is Augustin, Mason, James, Johnson, and Atchley.

This is the lineup I've wanted. Lets see how it works out.

Losing 13-6 early

TCU is raining threes and playing excellent defense.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:12 PM CST   0 recs

shooot!

I was supposed to go to the drum. Thanks for the post.

In Mack & Rick We Trust.

by Cyrus on Jan 2, 2008 4:15 PM CST   0 recs

Johnson already playing good D

Just forced Langford into a tough fade-away and missed it.

Still down 16-14. Pesky TCU continues to make threes.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:18 PM CST   0 recs

Damion James - beast

and today he's nailing his jumpshots. He is a stud in the making. Just nailed an off-balance 20 footer.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:20 PM CST   0 recs

19-16 TCU

Just hit ANOTHER three. Our perimeter defense needs to step it up. Guard the three point line!

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:21 PM CST   0 recs

James vs Salter

Both players are carrying their teams, and neither are being guarded very well.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:26 PM CST   0 recs

DJ out with two fouls

This will be a scramble til half time (9:09).

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:27 PM CST   0 recs

first lead since 2-0

Damion hit his 3rd three

by the other Andrew on Jan 2, 2008 4:28 PM CST   0 recs

Boy, James on the perimeter

is serious heat. Great shooting.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:28 PM CST   0 recs

Jesus

when will we stop going for EVERY single shot fake? DJ just went for one and got his 2nd foul. This has been a problem for multiple years it seems.

James hits ANOTHER shot.

MASON HITS A HUGE THREE!

We're up 24-22

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:29 PM CST   0 recs

Can't believe TCU getting so many long RBs.

GJ really wants the ball; could have been called for 3-second a couple of times.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:31 PM CST   0 recs

Are we making entry passes to the post?

It's a lost art with college kids these days.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Jan 2, 2008 4:34 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Just went into to GJ

but it bounced off his hands to Connor, who banked it in. I think we're trying to get it in more. They're letting GJ roam the interior.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:35 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Damion James

playing more like Lebron James.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:35 PM CST   0 recs

Ugh the worst part of AJ's injury

is JD Lewis getting playing time.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:35 PM CST   0 recs

I want to see more of that.

Entry pass to GJ and short pass to open Connor for two. THat's the ticket.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:37 PM CST   0 recs

Excellent play

not the best execution, but led to a sweet Connor hook shot.

Love the motion. Gary posts up, Connor cuts to basket and would've gotten the easy basket had he corralled the pass.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:37 PM CST   0 recs

Wow

monster block by James.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:38 PM CST   0 recs

Horns getting aggressive on D.

TCU only had two TOs up to a couple of minutes ago. Tighter D has now caused several more - and a couple of TCU fouls. They had been handling the ball well but without right tight pressure.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:41 PM CST   0 recs

JD

Shouldn't he at least be able to hit free throws???

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 4:44 PM CST   0 recs

Hey, he got his own RB.

As long as we break even with them in, it's ok.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:47 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Unbelievable

For a guy whose one skill is supposed to be shooting, the guy shoots miserably in games. You do the math. I come up with zero skills.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Jan 2, 2008 4:48 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Despite the subs, Horns are padding lead, 31-24.

However, the fouls are piling up on both sides.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:45 PM CST   0 recs

Smith is in the game!

We're going all out with AJ gone.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 4:47 PM CST   0 recs

Keep up these fouls

... and we'll have no choice but to empty the bench.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 4:48 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Damion

Was this all it took?  Moving him to his natural position??

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 4:51 PM CST   0 recs

Boy, he does look comfortable out there.

And he appears to see the floor and the openings for drives much better.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:53 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Horns 34-32 halftime.

Damion had 18.

The quality of passing, of set-up offense and shot clock control diminished the longer DJ was out.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 4:52 PM CST   0 recs

Barnes in a fro??

That just takes SILLY to a whole new level.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 4:59 PM CST   0 recs

LMAO that was hilarious!

"Matt" Barnes and "Matt" Abrams wearing Matt Hill's real afro? Someone needs to youtube that piece of gold.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:00 PM CST   0 recs

Did y'all get the feeling

that Barnes wasn't depending on GJ to score that much; more the D and under the basket presence?

Think that could change the second half with AJ back to starting feeding the ball to the paint?

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:02 PM CST   0 recs

You mean DJ I assume
Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 5:07 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

No, I meant Johnson.

Easing him in the offense, as it were.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:09 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

You said AJ in the 2nd sentence

Think that could change the second half with AJ back to starting feeding the ball to the paint?

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

Re: Mooney sighting!

I don't usually have the ability to get on these threads, but I was pretty excited to see Mooney get some actual minutes in this game. He acquitted himself pretty well, too.

Mason's been decent at the point, and even J.D. Lewis hasn't been completely useless.

GJ is smaller than I thought he'd be, but he looks good in the post.

James is still an absolute man, but the Horns can't win consistently if Augustin isn't their best player. So let's get it together, D.J.

Exciting 2nd half coming up!

My adopted kid is pure genius at the Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model.

by jc25 on Jan 2, 2008 5:04 PM CST   0 recs

Augustin not playing like POY

For one thing, he needs to understand how much he can kill his team by committing stupid fouls. That's a start.

Looks like he and Mason have infected each other with the cold jump-shooting. He's been struggling with his shot a bit since the Oral Roberts game.

He's also been a little reckless at times. He needs to keep the tempo fast, but be disciplined at the same time.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:08 PM CST   0 recs

Ugh

Horrible start to 2nd half. TCU is playing trap defense and they're once again raining threes.

DJ makes a big three.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:10 PM CST   0 recs

Ouch, two Horns TO, two TCU threes.

Augustin counters with a three, but Hackett answered, now TCU 41-37. That's 10 TOs for Texas; TCU with match-up zone.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:10 PM CST   0 recs

Good ball movement

to get the easy basket against their zone.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:14 PM CST   0 recs

GJ back in at 16:03 mark.

Mooney started at the half.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:15 PM CST   0 recs

James with double double

22 points, tying career high, and 11 rebounds.

DJ starting to eat them up; now he's looking like his 'normal' POY self.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:21 PM CST   0 recs

Tx 48-41

Better defense despite Mason's foul way out front.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:28 PM CST   0 recs

With AJ out

James steps up at the 3pt line.

Interesting that Connor has not taken a single 3 point shot. TCU must be really concentrated on shutting him down.

He's 3/3 though. He needs to get more involved in the offense. As a 60% 3pt shooter, can we please get him some shots?

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:35 PM CST   0 recs

Great man-to-man defense

There was a time when it would be brutal to have to watch us play man. Now, it's a good defensive strategy with Johnson playing. He appears to be athletic enough to guard multiple positions.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:37 PM CST   0 recs

With Mason in with GJ this is probably

their very best defensive team. Making TCU work hard for anything they get.

55-46 at 7:47

Who expected James to jump up with 26 points?

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:43 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Nice off. rebound by Johnson

That was P.J. Tucker like.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:39 PM CST   0 recs

He only wins his momma's heart

That's a player that has actually regressed in his tenure on the 40 acres.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 5:47 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

What's with Connor's arm sleeve.

Did AJ force it on him? Or a trade to wear Matt's hair?

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:46 PM CST   0 recs

James

has 48% of our scoring so far. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Probably bad.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:48 PM CST   0 recs

Yes, bad

But AJ is on the bench, and DJ and Connor are cold. So it's fixable.  But I'm happy for the big fella. Hope he sets a career high for rebounds today too.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 5:51 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Good in that we know he can explode

for big time points. Obviously tired, he hit a jumper from FT line to blunt TCU run of 3-2-2 that tightened up the game.

And it's good to know he can step up when needed. But he wont' be expected to keep it up; 15 or so is just fine in most games.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:51 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

TCU hanging in there 59-54

a rather pedestrian performance by the team. The loss of AJ, and Barnes using basically everyone off our bench is not helping.

Our defense is much improved though. That and James are probably the only two positives coming out of this game. I just hope we hang on.

You thought the Wisconsin loss was bad? This would be crushing. We must hope they start missing their perimeter shots.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:51 PM CST   0 recs

DJ and DJ

We honour thee

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 5:54 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

James steal, DJ trey got crowd going.

We said little about the crowd, but they need to help out with a six-point lead with 2;40.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:54 PM CST   0 recs

I love Damion James!

The guy just gave us an extra possession that led to a DJ three.

DJ is still the heart of this team, but James is like the engine.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:54 PM CST   0 recs

MOONEY with the hustle!

Defense and hustle is preventing us from collapsing. Props to that senior.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:56 PM CST   0 recs

Two fine Mooney plays

with screen and RB in corner. Who'd a thunk it?

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:56 PM CST   0 recs

The anti-JD
Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

by patienthornsfan on Jan 2, 2008 5:57 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Amen. PB gotta give Ian some props.

And nice three by Mason, too.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 5:59 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

HUGE Shot by Mason!

We need that. We really need that from him.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 5:58 PM CST   0 recs

Mooney

maybe he can be what Craigory was last year, at least with the energy.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 6:01 PM CST   0 recs

James doesn't get 30

but I'll take 29 and 14. That's Beasley like.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 2, 2008 6:05 PM CST   0 recs

Plus five blocks.

Outstanding game for Damion. 67-59 final for those without eyes or ears.

by whills on Jan 2, 2008 6:06 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

been waiting to say this

how did harrison smith look?

My adopted son Curtis Brown has the power of flight, but can't navigate his way onto the field.

by nematode on Jan 2, 2008 8:10 PM CST   0 recs

Like

he can't wait to launch a shot.

I don't know if you are serious or not but I do not expect Harrison Smith to ever contribute much as a Texas Longhorn.

Even if DJ turns pro, he will still be behind AJ, Mason, Dogus Balbay, and J'Covan Brown next season.
