Football related question....
I was just looking at out schedule for next year. We play OU on 10/11. I thought we always played them the first Saturday of Oct. I was all jazzed because my bday is 10/04, which is the first sat of October, but we are
playing at Colorado. Anyone have some insight.....
I hate Aggies.

Quirk of the calendar
I think it's an "X weeks" after the season starts rule, as opposed to first week in October.
Don't worry, though. When we win, the "I drank non-stop between my birthday and our victory" decision will look primo.

Re: calendar
I believe it has more to do with the start of the State Fair than the start of the football season. The RRS is the third Saturday of the Fair every year. The Fair starts Sept 26th.

It is usually the second saturday in October.
That's what I think. I don't ever remember it being on the first saturday in October. I could be wrong, but I think it has been for sometime now the second saturday in October.

2nd Saturday in Oct.
Oct. 7th is the second Saturday in Oct.
If I remember correctly, there was in article in the AAS where Dodds explained it had to do with Big 12 scheduling. If I can find the archive, I'll post it; might have been a comment in one of Kirk Bohl's articles.
Since 1934 there have been only two games not on the second weekend of October. In 2001 (Oct. 6) and 2007 (Oct. 6). Prior to 1934 we played OU anytime during the months of October and November including Thanksgiving Day 1910.

Math major, huh?
Oct. 7th is the second Saturday in Oct.
You might want to double-check those calculations.....or just look at the 7th of any month on any calendar.

not sure where we got off track here
There are 7 (seven) days in a week. If the first day of a month (the 1st) is a Sunday, the seventh day of the month (the 7th) will be a Saturday. A certain day of the week cannot come around for the second time in a month until the 8th day of the month at the earliest. As a real-life example, check out June 2008 on your calendar.
Elementary, fellas. If you don't believe me, use your fingers. This is Aggie stuff.

Ugh
I guess I really can't count.
Yes, that's me with 18 items in the 15 items or less express check out lane. =/
Soooo, for the game to be played on the second Saturday of October it would have to be played from October 8th and the 14th.
Which means, that from the early 1930's, there have been five games played outside of that time frame.
1978 Oct. 7th
2000 Oct. 7th
2001 Oct 6th
2006 Oct 7th
2007 Oct 6th
Now I'm not sure if it was in the AAS or DMN, but I remember reading Dodds explaining it as a Big 12 scheduling issue as to why the date changed.

Bad thing is....
I had my family of five change a family vacation that was going to be the first weekend in OCtober because, without looking at the calender, I just thought first weekend in October...... Now we are going to Vegas on parents dime in September.

So you're still going to Vegas?
Sorry, I just can't see the "bad thing" in this situation.

So you feel guilty as hell.
However, maverick, you really haven't committed a football crime, not even a two-bit misdemeanor. We can't bail you out. We can't even charge you with any ethical violations of the blogosphere. You're clean here.
Indeed, we could commiserate and drink all your booze. They go well together, and I'm your particular transgression will shrink in importance compared to the stories you'll hear once we get sight of your liquor cabinet. Be brave.
I'd recommend immediate confession to your whole family. In eight months you will have fulfilled your fair share of abuse, hopefully long before your Vegas vacation. Nothing like nagging hyenas for a 1,000 mile drive in the desert.
Of course, they're your family, so they know you all too well. What's another fuckup? I'm sure they forgive you for sending them into the desert when it's still a hot mofo, 110 in the shade, if you can find shade, still tourist season, but, hey, its Vegas. Spend those dimes. It's Resort Law.
After visiting that neon maw, you will realize that foresight is the most valuable human commodity and one you will cherish in the future. But if you keep fucking-up on this scale, do let us know. Why should your family have all the fun?
Because it's OOC, chances are the Horn's game that weekend will be only regionally televised and you'll miss it, too. If it makes you feel better, consider that a bit of penance. Of course, you could bet your wad on the aggies and lose your self-respect the old fashioned way.
I'm with Shake. There is no downside for us.

In addition
Maverick has now learned of the power he holds inside the family. He has the ability to change everyone's schedule and move a vacation based simply on "I'm pretty sure the OUsucks game is that weekend, so if you want me to go to Vegas we're gonna have to pick a different weekend."
Careful not to abuse this new power, sir.

LOL. The Power of Estimation.
He wouldn't dare think of abusing it. heh heh heh
