Finley leaving early...
The Austin-American Statesman is reporting that Finley informed UT officials of his intent to enter the draft. Seems like we barely had a chance to see what he can do. Best of luck to him--just one more reason for me to pay attention to Sundays in the fall. Do we have a stock pile of TE hanging around? Who will fill his shoes?

Here's hoping...
Irby can step up quickly. Crap!!! First our running game takes a huge hit. Now our freakin passing game takes a hit as well. What a crappy offseason.
I like the prospect of Irby/Marshall
Though I'm still not convinced Josh Marshall is a tight end.
I still can't help but think we missed out on the best tight end in the country.
hate for him to leave...
but seriously guys, we lost a ton of potential but not a lot of production. For whatever reason, he did not have the impact on the field that all of us thought he was capable of.
When he was included in the game plan, he was
near unstoppable. Look at the first half against OU. That was the best TE effort since David Thomas in Pasadena. Him leaving is an indictment that he has no faith that his production will increase next season with GD still at the helm.
Or
That he has a wife and kid(s?) and needs some financial stability. Greg Davis was the OC for David Thomas too if you recall.
Much more likely
I know how much everyone enjoys attributing all negative developments (from The Kennedy assassination to Global warming) to GD, it seems MUCH more likely that Finley is leaving because he has a family to support and is set to make a ton of money in the NFL. Good luck to him.
sad to see him go
I think part of the reason we didnt see the production this year is because of the young offensive line. GD kept Finley back to block alot more often then sending him out. I wish the best to him and i cant wait to see him on sundays
Ian Harris #84
He's a redshirt freshman. I think he is our next star at TE. He's big and just as fast as JMike.
Wish all the best to Jermichael at the next level.

Re:
Lost amidst the shuffle is that A&M's Martellus Bennett will also be declaring for the draft. With Chase Coffman also a strong bet to declare and Joe Jon Finley and Martin Rucker graduating, what was once a strength of the Big XII is quickly becoming a deficiency.
Also of note is that Mack and UT are quickly losing that coveted tag of "no one ever leaves early." Most of us justified Vince's decision to leave pretty readily, but the bottom line is the future ramifications of this will be felt for years to come. Would Charles and Finley have left early if Vince hadn't? Hard to say, but it's worth remembering that Duke once "always kept its players" until their senior year. Then, the Elton Brand/Corey Maggette/Will Avery year happened, and Duke lost a lot of its prestine, 4-year school brand.
I, too, am very surprised that Finley is declaring with so little to gain presently. But here's to all the best for him.
Ahhh....
two kids, with one on the way, will do that to you.
Losing JC and Finley is harmless
considering the major upgrade we made defensively with Muschamp.
Lets face it, Finley did not play a huge role on offense last year, so it's not like you can say we're going to miss him.
We're going to miss JC, but we're going to realize that him leaving for the NFL was the best for both parties, because now Scott will be showcasing his abilities in burnt orange.

Finley underutilized?
From the statesman bevo beat:
Finley approached the school single-season record for receptions for a tight end. He started all 13 games and caught 45 passes, which is second-best all-time for a UT tight end. The catches totaled 575 yards, which was third overall among Texas tight ends.
The 45 catches ranked third best on the team behind receivers Nate Jones (70) and Quan Cosby (60).
Seems like they threw to him a lot considering how weak our O line was, forcing him to stay in for protection more than last year (he had 31 receptions last year).
If the third leading receiver was not "included in the game plan" then did the game plan only include throwing to Jones and Quan?
Definitely underutilized
The records he approached are meaningless. A player of his stature demands more receptions.
You'll find out when you watch him dominating in the NFL that Finley should not be catching 25 and 15 less passes respectively than guys named Nate Jones and Quan Cosby.
Finley made the right decision in leaving. I had a feeling we would've underutilized him again next year anyway because our offensive line is still young and needs blocking help.

So
is he being underutilized if the line needs blocking help, or is he being utilized correctly because the line needs blocking help?
Receptions
That's my point. He'll be blocking a lot next year also, so that's why he's gone. Whether or not it was the right move for us to have him block mostly is debatable. There's still no reason why he could've have gotten more opportunities to catch the ball, especially in the redzone.
Using him mostly as just a blocker is underutilizing his other talents, so therefore, we underutilized him overall. He made the right move for his sake.

hate to say it
But we had a much better chance against the Aggies if we had not thrown to him. Just saying.
Yep...
my claim of hope was that if we gave him passes consistently prior to that game, those misses would've have happened.

Re: Why Redshirt?
After only seeing Finley for two years, I'm left wondering why teams bother redshirting players at all. In cases similar to Finley's, you're only getting two years of production from the guy. You're telling me a true freshman Finley couldn't have helped us in our championship run backing up Dave Thomas?
The only benefits I see to redshirting are for quarterbacks (since you're pretty much picking between 1 or 2 a year), or for players that aren't physically ready (offensive linemen come to mind). Why waste a year on a special talent who could potentially jump to the NFL after only two years of playing?
This post makes little sense on text, but it sounded good in my head. Thoughts?
Because
He is only the second UT redshirted player to leave early. It is also because of his special family situation...
