Rick Barnes on 1/11 FNL
Following in the footsteps of Mack Brown, who played a booster on the pilot of Friday Night Lights, Rick Barnes will appear as a recruiter trying to woo the star running back. The episode, I believe, airs this Friday.
My love for FNL has been well documented, so I won't bore you yet again, but I thought last Friday's episode was nothing short of amazing.
If you have time this week, check out the Rick Barnes cameo. Live, TiVo, online, torrented, whatever.
It's on Friday 9/8c. Thanks for reading.

Cool
Truly one of the most under appreciated and criminally under watched shows on television. Can't wait to see Coach Barnes on it. Was kinda hoping Mack would return but as himself this time.
LOL
Barnes' role is to try to recruit a guy named Smash Williams.

No seriously...
FNL
it's not nearly as good or as criminally underwatched as The Wire, but it is quite good. The realism of the first season was just amazing. The interactions between all the members of Coach Taylor's family are possibly the most realistic portrayal of family life i've seen on screen. The second season has been good too, though I think we could have all done without the Landry/Tyra storyline. And it's getting a bit melodramatic for my tastes. It's like NBC is trying to turn it into "the thinking man's OC" in order to up ratings.
Re:
Regardless, I've read reports that the show actually isn't doing that bad. Its still criminally under-watched, but it's hitting key demographics (particularly the +$100,000 audience), and it's faring ok against the newer shows in its time slot. So there's hope yet.
FNL is great
Having grown up in Austin around big-time HS football, I have really enjoyed this show. Some observations:
- Most high school teams with one initial on their helmets use the initial of the school or town. In the show they have a P on their helmets and apparel instead of a D for Dillon. They use the Pflugerville Panthers facilities and probably their unis as well?
- The on-field scenes are filmed in Pflugerville but the campus scenes are now filmed at Austin Reagan HS. I didn't notice that last year. I thought the first season was filmed in Del Valle (near Bergstrom Airport)? I think some of the scenes outside the stadium this season take place at Nelson Field, across from Reagan?
- "TMU" (Texas Methodist U!) is Wacker Field/Bobcat Stadium at Texas State in San Marcos, but they say it's in Austin, complete with skyline shots. Rick Barnes recruits for TMU in his debut.
- The swimming pool scenes from earlier this season were filmed at Bartholomew Park (51st St, East of I-35). I played little league in that park in the 60's. That really hit "home".
- During a recent trip to France I was shocked to find so many fans of the show there. While watching a Cowboys game in a sports bar near Nice, once they found out I was from Austin, there were more questions about FNL than there were about the Cowboys.
les Lumières du Vendredi Soir!
- The Broken Spoke and The Landing Strip are properly depicted as themselves, as they should be!
- I have bought lots of cars from guys just like Buddy Garrity.
It's all good.
adding on...
I too was hit home with the scene at the pool at bartholomew. I was a lifeguard at bartholomew for 4 years! i sat in the same lifeguard stand as julie and everything. that was a really funny thing to tell everyone... sorry to get all nostalgic here. but yeah, this show is really something amazing to watch for austinites!
Buddy Garrity
I saw Brad Leland, who plays Buddy at Doc's Motorworks on South Congress. I told him I liked the show and he ended up talking to us for about an hour. Real nice guy, pretty personable like Buddy too.
Brad is my favorite character
Brad knows that role pretty well, having played on the 1971 3A State Champ Plano Wildcat team. He's a TTU grad.
I think we all knew at least one "booster dad" like Buddy. Ours was tight with Reagan HC Travis Raven and was always giving him hell, despite not having a son that played football. The legendary Travis Raven (a former longhorn player in the 40's), didn't need much advice!
He won the 4A state championships and the very-MNC in 1967 (over Abilene Cooper 20-19), 1968 (over Odessa Permian 17-11) and 1970 (over Permian again 21-14). His record at Reagan was 62-10-1 which included a 35-game winning streak from 1967-1969.
Not bad considering the school didn't open until 1965. Props to Raven's arch-rivals at Permian, Gene Mayfield (62-10-2) and Gil Bartosh (23-1-0), who each earned a State and MNC as well. Permian dominated in the following years.
I think you all know why Reagan lost the State Championship game to John Tyler HS in the Dome in 1973. I was fortunate enough to have been dragged to all those games as a pre-teen. Total Magic.
Thanks for the opportunity to re-live and ramble!
Screw Laribee
Send that crap ass team back to their tornadoed town.
After seeing the preview
for this week, when the Laribee coach goes all Woody Hayes on Riggins, I hope Coach Taylor makes good on his promise to whoop up on the Laribee coach.
