Ranking CB's

and by CB's of course I mean corner backs ( which by chance includes the CBs, Chykie and Curtis Brown.)

So anyways, here is my questions to you all:  If you think you could crawl inside of muschamp and Akina's heads how do you think the cornerbacks would rank?  It's tough to always tell when watching on TV which guys are getting the most run but from what I can tell it seems as though A. Williams may have passed by Curtis Brown.

My guess:

Palmer, Ch. Brown, Beasley, A. Williams, then Cu. Brown... thoughts?

agreed,

except I think Chykie might be ahead of Palmer (perhaps even). I don’t think it’s an accident that more balls are thrown into Palmer’s domain than Chykie’s. And on skill, AW is as good as any of them. I can see him starting next year ahead of two veterans.

Mine or Akina's?

Mine: Chykie and Aaron start, because they can tackle. Palmer is my nickelback, because his height disadvantage is less prevalent against the shorter slot-style receivers, and he can tackle. After that, Curtis and then Deon provide the depth. Beasley just looks like he avoids contact and constantly gets burned trying to make flying arm tackles when he should be laying the wood. If you can’t tackle, you’re a liability in my book. I don’t know enough about Curtis to put him ahead of Palmer, but I would give him a lot of looks to see if he needs to be developed for next year.

Akina’s (from what I’ve seen of the personnel usage so far): Palmer, Chykie, Deon, Aaron, Curtis. The obvious difference between Akina and my selections is experience. I can see why he might want Palmer out there to chaperone, and he always seems to be barking out coverages before the snap. That’s a coaching decision that I’m fine with. Deon, on the other hand, is killing me right now. I don’t know how I didn’t notice him avoiding contact all last year when I was rooting for him. Chykie must have been a safety in high school or something, because I think he’s possibly our surest tackler in the secondary. Aaron is extremely physical as well, and hopefully he and Chykie pound Tech’s receivers until their hands turn into bricks like we did in 2006.

Aaron Williams

wears #4, which makes him an autoomatic favorite of mine. I can’t help it! I love that damn # in orange baby.

I'd put Palmer #4 on that list

He starts, but is not near the talent we see in Ch. Brown, Beasley, and A. Williams. I’m not sold on Cu. Brown yet…. I haven’t watched his play a whole lot either, so it’s tough to make any points one way or the other.

On a related note, I really like the #4 on A. Williams as well. I was pretty dehydrated by the end of the Arkansas game, and was not certain whether or not The Ghost of Roy Williams had come back to take revenge on Piggy for that whole 2003 thing.

Sigh... Beasley

I had high hopes for the guy this year, but he’s been outperformed by his teammates. Hopefully he can turn it around.

I guess that came out wrong

He hasn’t been horrible, but less than what I expected. I admit, though, that perhaps my expectations were unfair to begin with.

Agree with you

while he has not been horrible, I though he was going to have a breakout year and be our shutdown corner.

I felt the same and am fairly mystified.

Was our assessment just wrong?
Or did he not take well to a new learning curve?
Or is he playing hurt just trying to stay in the mix and keep up?
This last could be a high ankle sprain, ligament pull, shoulder separation.

I’ve seen kids play with a minor separations, ones you can pad up and the likelihood of great injury was low. I saw one kid play with a depression you could put your fist in. He caught several long TDs, but whenever he got hit directly on it, he came out and was, as they say, “really tested.”

For a defensive player, that would be tough; usually you can choose which shoulder to use, but in quick reactive situations, that choice isn’t always there. And if you’re obviously favoring one, you’ll be spotted quite soon.

Don’t mean to make excuses for him, but he doesn’t seem to have quite the physical peak he did last year. There was a progression there last year. Hell, maybe Mad dog got ‘em. Any evidence y’all see?
