H.S. Recruits

How are all our prospects doing?

Jordan Leslie continues to be a great player on a bad team.

This week: 5 receptions for 106 yards, 2 TD, 21.2 ypc in a 37-26 loss to Westfield.

For the season so far (remember 2 games were cancelled due to IKE):

44 receptions for 865 yards, 20 ypc, 8 TD. All this on a team that's 1-5.

Quite a good Junior season.

Jaime Peebles DNP.  I'm not going to cover JP anymore. To paraphrase Coach Royal: Well, Jamie, we took a look at you, and you weren't any good.

Devon Kennard

My “Adopt-a-recruit” got hurt in the 3rd game of the season, torn ACL, out for the year.

But, with the way orakpo has been playing that has to be good for Texas. He said he was going to watch Orakpo through out the season and depending on how he played is how he would make his choice

That's tough

Don’t understand the whole “I’m going to watch how Rak is played” thing. If you’re good enough to get into the lineup, then you play. If not, I hear Sam Houston State is nice this time of year.

maybe..

..IMO he might be seeing how they use Orakpo. If he doesn’t perform well, he might think that they are underutilizing him, but since Rak has been a beast, it might help us get him

I'm not doing the whole Adopt-a-recruit

But didn’t someone on here say Jamarkus McFarland was brought to the Cotton Bowl by OU and ended up cheering for UT apparently?

If so, beautiful.

I heard that too

As for Kennard, its down to USC and Texas from what i understand. Where ever he goes he wants to be able to drop back in coverage with a Zone blitz and things like that. He just compared him self to Orakpo, being that type of athlete.

With our evolving defense, virtually everyone but the DTs cover

at one time or another. The real need is for the athletic outside LBs that can run and cover and yet be sure tacklers in the running game, the hybrid safety/LB/small DE combo. If he fits that mold, then he might have a home.

how does that work?

My understanding was that a school cannot bring a recruit or pay for him to attend a game that is not on their campus.

is it too late for our recruiting surge?

the way we are playing now…we should be getting lots of attention…or did we sign everyone already…

Emory Blake, WR, Austin High

Likely won’t wind up at UT, but is on the radar. Through 7 games:

43 catches for 690 yards, 8 TD
36 carries for 365 yards (long of 93), 3 TD and one 2 pt. Conversion
2-for-3 passing for 77 yards, 1 TD
also 90-yard kick-off return for a TD

The word is he was offered a greyshirt

… so that Mack could use one of the scholarships from 2010. Not sure he’ll be interested, but with the depth we suddenly have at WR he would have red-shirted in 2009 anyway.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

Let's not forget

the offense’s reliance on DT in goal line situations. Lokey, now Miller, and in the future, hopefully, McFarland. The dude used to be a stud baseball player before he decided to focus on football. I’m assuming he has good hands, the kind that can catch passes in addition to deflecting OLinemen.

That Texas consistently utilizes the team’s DTs on offense has to be a perk he pays attention to.

Well

The fact that Texas is number 1 and getting tons of attention from the media isn’t hurting our recruiting this year.

No, it’s not, but it’s hard to see whether or not it’s helping. They had all 19 of their current commitments in hand long before the conference schedule started, and I believe even before the FAU game.

I sure hope they can score at least two out of Dre Kirkpatrick, JaMarkus McFarland, Devon Kennard, and Craig Loston. I think Kirkpatrick is the longest shot of those, kind of like Eric Berry was a few years ago. UT is pretty high on all their lists, and also in the running for high-end prospects like CB Gabe Lynn, OLB Jarvis Jones,

For whatever it’s worth, UT is low, but on, the stated lists of DT William Campbell, RB Christine Michael (from TX), and CB/S Kevin Brent (from TX).

I’m sure there are others, but those are the stated guys from Rivals.com. I also think UT could still be working on some guys who are committed to other schools, a practice I don’t really like, but could lead to some other high-end recruits later.

It kind of annoys me that Mack won’t go out of state much anymore.

follow-up to my own post:

From http://florida.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=863600

Loston is rumored to be heavily favoring the Tigers over Texas and Oregon, and will take an official visit to Baton Rouge on Nov. 8, when LSU plays Alabama. Loston tried to get Holloman to change his official visit date to LSU (Oct. 25, when the Tigers play Georgia) to Nov. 8, but that doesn’t look likely to happen.

• Rumors have begun that five-star defensive tackle Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin (Texas) High could decide by on his college choice by the middle of November. He is said to be tiring of the recruiting process. LSU, Oklahoma and Texas are his finalists. Most sources believe Texas now is ahead.
