Interesting trend here

Each team was here 2 years in a row. Check back in 2009 to see if we can continue that. Considering that most UT fans considered 2009 to be “our year” before 2008 started, I would say there is a reasonable chance we could continue that trend. Of course, it only counts if we can continue the other part of it, which is playing in the NC game. Winning that would be nice, as well.

Sigh.

I get nervous around such optimism.

Is 2002 a typo?

In 2002, Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship and went to the Rose Bowl, but a second consecutive loss to Oklahoma State kept the Sooners out of the big dance.

The 2002 national title game was the Fiesta Bowl between Ohio State and Miami (Florida).

Actually, we went to the Cotton Bowl after the 2002 season (played Jan. 1, 2003), and beat LSU with an amazing game by Roy Williams.

OU did go to the 2002 Cotton Bowl, as in played 1/1/02 after the 2001 season. They played in the Rose Bowl on 1/1/03 after the ’02 season.

And the higher ranked team had won every rrs since how long ago?

History like that is cute, but ultimately meaningless.

Agreed. nt

More than just 1 National Championship?

by Ultra Horn on Oct 19, 2008 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, exactly.

It’s not only meaningless, its dangerous on two levels: First, it implies that we are basically a lock to go to the MNC game. Second, it implies that once we get there, we are probably going to lose. All of that is just malarky.

Each season and each set of college teams have their own dynamic. I’m not saying that posts like this are dumb or stupid, they are very entertaining and i appreciate the time that goes into researching and creating them.

I think we just need to separate concrete analysis of our title hopes from those based on some mythical history.

Again, I’m not ripping on the post. I just think that there are plenty of other ways we can temper our hype (like acknowledging the tough teams ahead).

by hornalum08 on Oct 20, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second that.

And where is the post-game recap? You’ve got an hour and a half haha.

by pleaseplaykindle on Oct 19, 2008 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

Unfortunate details:

Only 1 of those teams actually won an MNC. (Crap)

One losing team was declared the greatest team of all time, before Superman smote them and defeated the evil forces of Disney. Now they are vanquished by third rate heroes like Stanford and Oregon State.

Two incarnations of Ohio State managed to bring enough shame to their conference that it’s difficult to even make the MNC game from the Big 10.

/Sorry folks

Who really gives a crap about the trend shown above.

The BCS has been around longer than that. USC did win one (so it’s not like somebody never won the MNC after being #1 in the first BS poll).

And remember…WE’RE BOOM MF’IN TEXAS. We will re-write the damn rules of nature because WE’RE TEXAS DAMN-IT. We may win the next 5 or 6 in a row.

Some (meaningful) history...

’02 Sooners- Only ranked team played before 1st BCS was #9 Texas (35-24), a couple impressive victories but also some close games against unranked opponents (Alabama by 10 at home, missouri on the road by 7)

’03 Sooners- Again, only ranked team played before 1st BCS was #5 Texas (i wont put the score). Other games were mostly blowouts. Then only played 1 ranked team before Big 12 championship game (#22 ok state at home) and won that big. Everyone remembers the Big 12 championship game though- lost 35-7 to #10 kansas state (keeping us out of a probable BCS bowl while still advancing the sooners to the bcs championship game)

’04 USC- had played 2 ranked teams before 1st BCS standings, both at home – #7 Cal(Texas Tech just scored again whiners) 23-17 and #19 Arizona State 45-7. And this team is the one that won the BCS Championship game (the drubbing of OU)

’05 USC- Had played three ranked teams, all on the road, before 1st BCS numbers came out. That was obviously a good team…..we were just better.

‘06 OSU- Had played three ranked – #2 Texas (Colt’s second game as a starter, closer game than the 24-7 final score suggested), #24 Penn State (28-6), @#13 Iowa (38-17).

’07 OSU- Had only played #23 Purdue (23-7) before the 1st BCS standings, never played any team ranked higher than 20 before losing to LSU (does anyone else find that pretty preposterous?)

Anyways, all that to say i would suggest our #1 initial BCS ranking is significantly more substantial than any other team that has held the spot in the last 9 years. I think we have a better case than even ’04 and ’05 USC (one of those teams won a MNC convincingly, the other lost in the greatest college football game of all time). And who, exactly would be the ’05 Texas to our imaginary ’05 USC this year? Alabama? P-lease. Penn State? Last time i checked, Clark is no VY (1st year starter, in the Big 10, there will never be another VY, etc).

No need for worry, not from a very small sample size of history. Let’s focus on Ok State and make it two weeks straight at #1 in BCS.

Last time Texas was #1 in the BCS...

…was in 2005. The very next game was against…. yep, the T Boone Cowboys (though that game was in Stillwater). The Horns played their most underwhelming half of football all year in the first 30 minutes of that game. But, VY went nuts in the second half and all was well. Horns won 47-28. Not an incredibly important factoid, but it popped into my head with the release of the new BCS standings.

what i take away from these records is that . . .

. . . historically, the “first” BCS #1 has more often than not made it to the BCS championship game. In that I take heart. So the point is getting to the title game.

After that, it’s about who is best prepared, most hungry and opportunistic during that game.
