Just some OkieState thoughts...
From what I have seen, and from what has been written, okiestate is a decent running team. That being said, all I have seen in columns about our game with them is how Dez Howard is going to have a huge game...
Will muschamp certainly has his work cut out for him, but again we contained the Tight End from Mizzou fairly well... As for OkieStates Rushing attack...
If i'm not mistaken we have the number 2 run defense in the country (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/stats/2008/divia/team/index.html)
Teams are only averaging 48.1 yards a game against us. Now, Hunter might be one hell of a running back, but I do not see him getting past lammar Houston, Roy Miller, Kindle and Orakpo very often...
As for Zac Robinson, The jury is still out. He hasn't really seen a defense like ours yet. Anylist talk about how gritty their D is so on and so forth. What about are D...We just held one of the most potent offenses in the country to a 35 - 0 blanking in the first half... I'm pretty sure our D can stand up to Zac Robinson, not to mention, They Practice against the best QB in the nation EVERYDAY. I'm positive they will be able to contain Robinson. Kindle, I assure you, has Robinson's number...
I'm so excited to be able to sit back here in Georgia, and listen to SEC fans bitch about how over rated we are, and how we don't deserve to be there...I look at them, smile, than prouldly start singing "The eyes of texas are upon you"
Hook em yall!

Bryant
I don’t think we really contained their tight end; granted, most of his damage came in the meaningless second half, but he did finish with quite an impressive day. What we did do was contain Jeremy Maclin (except in the kicking game), which was definitely the right choice. Sometimes, an offense has too many weapons to reasonably try to stop. When we played USC, we correctly keyed in on Bush to eliminate any game-changing plays, but that meant that we resigned ourselves to getting pummeled by LenDale White’s fat.
I hear Okie State has a good tight end themselves, though not on the level of Coffman or Gresham whom we had trouble against. I think we can contain Bryant, but one thing we have to watch out for is Robinson’s ability to move. He’s more mobile than either Bradford and Daniel, and while he may not have the pass protection of Bradford, he’s certainly more capable of avoiding our good pass rush and finding a big play downfield. That’s one way Dez Bryant can get loose, just on broken plays that are prolonged by the legs of his QB.
I’m interested to see what Muschamp does to compensate for Robinson’s running ability.

well said...
I would have to imagine will muschamp will use our own elusive quarterback to practice with. I mean why wouldnt he? Colt’s just about as elusive as anyone in the country…
I see Orakpo and kindle coming from opposite sides to completely harass robinson, I’m not sure if robinson will have enough time to get the ball out as fast as those guys get off the line.

Zone
Dare I say it, will Muschamp lay off the blitz a bit and play back in a zone?

One dimensional Pass Game
This passing game of this team reminds me more of the Reshaun Woods era than any other.
Dez Bryant has 45 receptions and 809 yards. Thats 48% of Zac’s completions and 54% of his yards. For all the talk about how great Pettigrew is, he has, for the season, 11 receptions and 131 yards. And yes, he has the second most catches on the team.
Pettigrew is the Jmike argument. Im sure he is great, but if they dont utilize him, who cares. Hell even Jmike, who we all thought was underused, had 28 catches for 396 yards at this point last season.
In contrast, OU’s Gresham has 26 catches for 423 yards, and Mizzou’s Coffman has a whopping 56 catches for 694 yards.
We have played our best TEs already. Dez is what we need to and will focus on, and if we can cover him, watch the sacks start to roll in.
Note: Just checked Reshaun Woods’ senior year at OSU, he had 41.8% of Josh Fields completions. So they are even more one dimensional than those teams were.

Pettigrew has been hurt
Which is why his stats aren’t what you’d expect. I believe he’s actually rated between Coffman and Gresham as far as NFL potential, so he’s definitely no slouch. Add the fact that Gundy is a good offensive coach and we’ve given up big yards to TE’s the last couple of games and I’d be surprised if he wasn’t a big part of their gameplan on Saturday.
There is a dropoff at WR after Bryant, but in the Missouri game those other WR’s showed they can make big plays and turn a game if you allocate too many resources to just stopping Bryant.
OSU is the best rushing team we will face this year. With our DL and overal rush defense, I’m not as concerned that they will gash us for huge yards on the ground, as much as I’m concerned that just a little success running the ball will affect our pass rush and overall what we want to do on defense.
Add in Robinson’s mobility, which I believe is underrated to the same extent that Colt’s was this time last year, and this is a dangerous offense.

Aside from OU
This game scares me the most each and every year. I know history means nothing once the ball is kicked off, but we have developed some very bad habits against these people over the years, and one of these days that’s going to rise up and get us.
From a strategic perspective, Boddicker is dead-on. Muschamp will take away their big receiving weapon and let them attempt to beat us with the tight end.
Of all the good QBs we’ll play this season, Robinson reminds me the most of Colt. He’s accurate, dangerous with his legs, and is making good decisions in the offense.
Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate.

I don't know if it is bad habits, poor expectations or what.
But I do know Gundy can create a serious game plan and that knowledge would lead me to think that’s the lead element. What seems odd is that his game plan for the first half is just magic – complete with circus catches and great execution. Second half, not near as much. Either they don’t have the plan to overcome Texas’ adjustments or they just get worn down and then just lose their will.
Very dangerous opponent, but seeing how, with the twist of the schedule, the OSU/Missouri film was the key evidence last week, plus the Baylor film, the Horn coaches should have everything down this time. We should see the best game plan we’ve seen in years. Should.

COLT...
for my money…I would much rather have colt…
From what we have seen from muschamp is that the Defense knows their gameplan. I’m fully confident that Muschamp will do more then his homework, and have our guys ready to go on D.
Aside from that, Greg Davis has been calling Fantastic games…Starting with OU and didn’t turn it off with Mizzoue…Dare I say it, but I’m becoming a GD fan…

maybe its not just GD
we did bring in applewhite this year…maybe he is having a bigger impact in the play calling than we see

Concerning Bryant
My memory light came on when I read about Dez Bryant early this season. Was he somebody the Horns wanted when he was in HS, or am I mistaken? Did he opt for Okie State, did Mack back off him, was it grades? Anybody know?
by edsp on Oct 21, 2008 1:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Definitely grades
Lufkin is (was?) a huge A&M pipeline and even they couldn’t recruit him.
From memory, a couple of guys on OSU’s roster that were recruited by UT:
-Orie Lemon – wanted to play QB, Mack offered as LB. Surprise, now he’s a LB and is playing pretty well.
At one point Ketchum had him as a top in-state recruit.
-Richetti Jones – Very talented DE. Lots of rumors during recruiting about deadlines being put on him to commit and some bad blood between his family and coaching staff during recruiting. Ultimately we got Sam Acho at DE and stopped recruiting him. Suffered a terrible hip injury that he may never fully recover from and is getting mostly mopup duty right now as a RS-FR.

people keep talking about how great OSU’s running game is, all it takes is a look at their oppnent’s and how their defenses are doing this year at stopping the rush and you get an idea that they may be very well overrated.
washington st #118 252yd/g
houston #105 197yd/g
missouri state NR NR
troy #73 151yd/g
texas a&m #112 223yd/g
missouri #33 110yd/g
baylor #58 134yd/g
and the rushing results from their games with the top run defenses (missouri and baylor)…
against baylor :
hunter 3.57ypc
robinson 4.07ypc
toston 4.7ypc
missouri :
hunter 6.41ypc
robinson 2.83ypc
toston 1.3ypc
while the numbers are not terrible in those two games, they’re far from the common 8ypc and 7ypc we see quoted about hunter and toston.
btw, i believe brandon pettigrew (their TE) is coming back from a 4 week ankle injury. so i’ve been told.

correct on pettigrew (ankle sprain)
DNP against Troy, A&M and Missouri, and had 1 catch last week against Baylor. Caught 10 balls in first two games.

Chances..
With all the Affermentioned…
I can not see Will Mushchamp completely missing what their strenghts are on offense. We have seen time and time again that he has done his homework on the offenses we have seen thus far. I don’t think that guy ever sleeps…
Looking forward to an Okiestate Ass wooping on saturday!!
