Why do we hate Jeter so much

I was a bit shocked when he was booed at the stadium last week.

I actually felt it was in bad taste.

I don't follow the Yankee's that much as I am a Cubbie Bear Fan. And once college football season starts, I really could care less until the playoffs and World Series.  I watched the last game at Yankee Stadium and felt a bit of sadness that such a great American icon was being destroyed.

I am assuming it is due to the fact that the Yankees are in the same league at the Houston Astro's.  But he is great baseball player.

I just wanted to know.

Thanks

J

People in general seem to have irrational hatreds

Like everyone on BON who hates Tim Tebow. It makes no sense. There are good guys and there are bad guys, and Jeter is most definitely a good guy.

Plus, how can you not at least respect a man who has now dated 7 of the Maxim Hot 100. Seriously, if any of you were in his position, would you not do exactly as he does? I sure as hell would.

Hmm

Ok, good point. You have to respect his taste in women, though.

Though Jeter is neither in-your-face with his personal points of view nor does he make music that some might consider “painful.” He’s objectively a good baseball player that keeps to himself.

True

But overall good player.

Jeter proves that the Golden Glove means nothing (and probably every other award).

Same League??

Admittedly I don’t follow America’s past time like I did when I was younger but last time I checked the Yanks were in the AL East and the Astros were in the NL Central. As a “cubbies fan” I’d think you might know that.

I was at the game and it was a little weird that he got boo’d. To his credit he kinda just smiled and shrugged it off. Personally I don’t think many players have been as overrated as him over the past 15 yrs. of sports but I do think he seems like a pretty cool cat.

This, and...

because they’re YANKEES! Remember the whole “yankee vs. southerner” thing when you were growing up? It still permeates for no real reason.

WTF?

What do you mean “remember”? I still make it a point to discuss the true border between us and “them”: The Red River.

Jeter is awesome

Booing Jeter is a knee jerk reaction to those jealous of his stature and success.

Jeter is an awesome baseball player. Best shortstop (IMHO) since Ozzie Smith. The guy never complains, he’s classy, always has dirt on his uniform, always tries to run out an infield hit, gives up his body for a foul ball — he’s just a great freeking ball player. And, as a Cubs fan, I would give up Soriano for Jeter without a second’s hesitation.

Booing Jeter because he’s a Yankee is definitely a knee jerk reaction. It’d be like an Aggie fan saying that they’re cool with going 0-8 in conference because it’s a rebuilding year.

Anyway, my point is this: That chick that Jeter is dating is HOT!!!

First i recognize that it is your opinion

But alot of baseball experts who analyze every part of the game contend that Jeter is actually one of the worst shortstops in the league. Those plays where he runs to the third base side and hops and throws to first sure look pretty, but it is actually a testament to how small his range is. Most of those plays would be routine plays for most other shortstops, but because of his lack of range, he has to revert to that measure to make that play.

When was the last time you saw Jeter make a diving stop deep in the hole between short and Third, get up and throw out a decently fast runner? His range is lacking, and his arm is sub-par. he may look pretty doing it, but the fact of the matter is, he doesnt make nearly all the plays that say, Jason Bartlett would make.

True there are many differing opinions, but it is fascinating when you look at the multiple articles on the opinion

Booing Jeter is just fun

but I’m sure if he would have wore orange or gave the Hook’em sign then there would have been a massive cheer.

And honestly, I just hate all yankees. In the literal term… everyone north of kentucky…. don’t like them.

He's a man-whore

But I would be, too, if I had his money and stature. But Minka is way too good for him and his multitude of STDs, which is why I would have boo’ed him were I at the game.

Plus, dude is overrated as a baseball player. Yes, I’d still him take over most shortstops, but overall he’s not this world-beating player everyone makes him out to be. But I do respect him for doing his job consistently well and for not bringing negative headlines to his team.

And, while I’m here, Fuck the Yankess and their baseball philosophy.

STDs and Vague Philosophies

BigTexBD: Uhmmm… what in the hell are you talking about?

I believe in knee-jerk reactions, too. But, STD’s?? Is their philosophy based in Jungian or Freudian theory?

Of course I dont know for sure

I don’t know if Jeter really has STDs or not; I’m just trying to say he gets around. Plus, I, like most guys around here, have a bit of a crush on Minka. She apparently had her heart broken by John Mayer earlier this year, and she deserves better than someone who goes through women like Bob Stoops does headsets.

Baseball philosophy

In my estimation, they attempt to buy championships instead of building a team that earns one. I’m happy they haven’t been successful in that endeavor. They were so much better when they were made up of Paul O’Neils, Bernie Williamses, etc, than with A-Rod, Abreu, etc.

It’s kinda like what the Cowboys are going through now. They won Super Bowls with guys they already had on the roster (the Triplets, Moose, etc.), but then those guys retired. Now they are trying to buy their success with T.O., Roy, Leonard Davis, Adam Jones, etc.

Just my opinion, really.

by BigTexBD on Oct 22, 2008 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Laughable

First of all, Paul O’Neil was obtained through a trade. He wasn’t a lifelong Yankee.

Secondly, in the age of free agency, most teams are filled with guys that they traded for or signed. Without doing the research, I would guess that nearly every team is made up of a majority of guys who did not come up through the farm system. I don’t understand why people are so much harder on baseball than other sports when it comes to free agency.

Thirdly, the Yankees do not buy their championships. At least not more than any other teams do. Compare the Yankees and the Red Sox.

The 2004 Boston team’s roster had 22 out of 25 players that began their Major League career somewhere besides Boston. Included in this number is Curt Schilling. Without Curt Schilling, the Red Sox would have lost in the League Championship Series. Compare that to the 1998 World Champion Yankees team, where only an ordinary 12 out of 22 players that saw playing time in the World Series came from another team (I couldn’t find the full 25-man roster). Yep, nearly half of the roster from the best Yankees team of the last 80 years was homegrown.

After the dynasty ended, the Yankees became more liberal in their free agent spending (though this is really a trend across baseball). But it hasn’t worked for them! What is there to complain about? They bought high-priced free agents and….lost? Well then, so what? Serves them right, right? Who cares? They didn’t buy any championships because they haven’t won any championships.

by Meekrob on Oct 22, 2008 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I should have been clearer

My use of the Cowboys as an example skewed what I was trying to say. I didn’t try to say that the Yankees were better when they relied on their farm system (which is what the Cowboys comment may have implied), rather, they were a better team when they had the right players in the right places. They had a great mix of role players, glue guys, superstars, etc in the late 90s/early 00s; but since they started their spending spree they have seemed to forget about building a team in the true sense of the word. Nowadays, the sum of the Yankees’ parts doesn’t make a whole.

And I never said they actually bought championships, merely that they have attempted to.

Roger

I’m sure alot of people were booing him. Suddenly he’s a huge Horns fan. Texas athletics should stay away from him..esp after that horrendous testimony.

um, i'm pretty sure he's been a big horns fan for a while....

like since he won the college world series for UT in 1983. or something.

I booed my heart out when he was on the screen, hell I even stood up to do it, all while wearing my beaten up old Red Sox cap in support of my team in game 6 that night. You might have felt disgusted, I felt proud. To quote one of my favorite t-shirts “Jeter sucks ARod”
