Craig Loston's coach: "He's going to LSU"

Artice below is about Craig Loston commmiting to LSU, from espn.com.

Anyone have any idea why this idiot refuses to be a Longhorn?

Under Armour All-American safety Craig Loston's coach, Ray Evans, told ESPN affiliate Web site TigerGumbo.com Thursday, "He's going to LSU, his mind is made up. I don't think it is switching. That's pretty much what he has told me."

Loston was previously committed to Clemson but dropped that pledge after the exit of former head coach Tommy Bowden.
Following his decommitment, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Oregon emerged as possible destinations along with LSU.

ESPN's Bill Conley elaborated on the news, "To no one's surprise Craig Loston's high school coach confirms Loston is headed to LSU. The rumors started weeks ago even before Tommy Bowden was released at Clemson. Loston becomes the Tigers, that's LSU not Clemson Tigers, 17th commitment in a class that is getting stronger and stronger."

"Loston is without a doubt one of the most versatile athletes in the 2009 class. He is an exceptional pass defender from the safety position. Loston possesses the valuable combination of technical skills and leaping ability. He can go vertical to high point the football and has the soft hands to haul it in to his body. As good as he is in zone coverage; he shows equal ability to blanket a receiver man-to-man."

Believe his cousin

blue-chip QB/athlete Russell Shephard, was an early LSU commit. That may have something to do with it. Also, Loston is supposed to be a safety. Since Horns have FIVE freshman safeties . . .

Who cares?

as noted above – we already have 5 studly freshmen safeties. Just because this kid has 5 stars next to his name doesn’t mean he’s going to be anything special. Drew Kelson came out as a 5 star safety and Blake Gideon had 2 stars next to his name. Already I feel confident in saying that Gideon is going to have a MUCH more productive career than Kelson did.

In addition to the safeties we already have on campus the 09 class already has some other promising looking players who could play either corner or safety.

So why was there an offer?

It sounds like to me your saying that we don’t need him. Then my question to you is why would we according to most reports pursue him and be ready to offer him one of the remaining few scholorships? I’m pretty sure Mack and the staff are aware of the safeties on the roster, and it didn’t stop them.

he's probably pretty good

So I’ve watched a little film on him for what it’s worth and there’s no questioning he’s physically pretty special. Now I say this next part not trying to be backhanded at all but he would probably be a GREAT special teams player for the horns. I just don’t think that his not being a part of Texas’ defensive backfield is going to be at all detremental to the horns going forward.

Like I said before I like a lot of our younger db’s – here’s to the horns hopefully landing kennard and/or mcfarland.

enjoy your lsu degee Craig.

also random question – does Loston go to the same school as our lone wr commit? (can’t think of his name)

School

is Aldine Eisenhower. Aldine is north of downtown Houston, not far from Bush-IAH.
UT commit is WR Greg Timmons.

You offer the best players, especially when they say they are considering you. You can’t have too many 5 star prospects, especially when that prospect is the #1 safety in the country.

andmyster is still correct, though. He’s not saying we don’t need him, it just isn’t a huge deal that he decided to to go LSU. We all knew he is Shepard’s cousin, and that he was leaning towards LSU anyways. No sweat. Marcus Davis is a stud. Our safeties on the roster currently and from the incoming class will do just fine.

Let him go to LSU!

You know this reminds me of a young man named Ryan. Ryan was an exceptional young athlete. Young Ryan was dripping with potential. Ryan was committed to Texas to play Quarterback. Ryan wasn’t so smart and felt he could start faster elsewhere as he didnt need to prove anything. After all, he was 19 years old, knew everything, got some bad advice on what was supposed to be coming to him, what he was owed, and what he should do to get on the field as fast as possible, since he was dripping with NFL potential and all. So Mr Ryan goes to Washington, I meant Baton Rouge to get up "all in da mix "and start competing for the QB job. He was identified as very talented but raw and begins limited playing time behind a Mr Flynn. Then the coach starts this two QB thing and he just cant seem to get on the field full time. Tiger insiders say that he was crying and moaning becuase he wanted the ball and his touches and felt he should be starting but his playing time that he did receive wasnt as productive as it should have been. Then Ryan gets himself thrown off the team for undisclosed reasons, transfers to Jacksonville State and is still mediocre. Good ridance I say.

Now I am not saying this Loston kid will end up that way but when you think you are owed something than problems start to arise. A preety good high school QB from a 2A school in central Texas was given a scholarship at Texas and was redshirted his freshman year to develop. Look at Mr McCoy now. Besides this kid probably wouldn’t see the field for a while behild Thomas, Gideon and Brewster. Oh well bubba go to LSU and best of luck but at the texas proving ground you do just that….prove yourself. Semper Fidelis and hook em.

That's greatness

That’s exactly the main point of even posting something about him. It has nothing to do with us needing him He is an idiot for not wanting to go to Texas in the first place especially when the interest is reciprocated and you’re from AUSTIN. I have a feeling we will be saying the same thing, atleast I will be about Jamarkus McFarland sometime soon.

He's always been a hater

Yes, I know I’m a creepy stalker for knowing this </billy zane>, but I’ve been told that Loston is a guy who loves to flash the horns down, in virtually every picture he’s in. For some reason he just always hated Texas. No one thought we had any chance at him at the beginning of the recruiting cycle, so I never got my hopes up when he named us in his top 3 a little while back.

addendum

A&M fans were penciling Loston into their 2009 lineup this past summer, as he was an Aggy fan growing up. (I believe he also may have some family connection to the team as well). Texas fans should actually get a chuckle out of Loston committing to LSU; he was never coming here and Aggy’s incompetence scared off a big-time recruit that grew up a fan.

by andy_wooster on Oct 24, 2008 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

Incompetence scares off family too

Terrence Bullitt a safety at Garland Naaman Forest (3 star, I think) committed to Tech over A&M. His brother is A&M’s former safety Melvin Bullitt who nows plays with the Colts and their dad formerly played at A&M. Their ridiculous run program not only scares off the blue-chippers, but mediocre talent who has been brought up to love the aggs.

As Jim Rome said “If the world were ever to get an enema, College Station is where you would connect the hose.”

Something about all this rubs me the wrong way

Ripping an 18 year old kid and saying he’s an “idiot” for “refusing to be a Longhorn” should be beneath us. We’re Texas, we don’t beg anyone, we don’t miss anyone and we’re classy enough to wish them well when they go to some other school. They’re going to need it.

Mack has the right recruiting philosophy – if the opportunity to play football in the capital of the great state of Texas, clad in burnt orange and white, doesn’t make a person come running then there’s no place for them here.

And for his part, it’s evidently a wise decision on young Mr. Loston’s part to find a school where he’ll get earlier playing time, have less competition to start, take easier classes, get to pretend he’s a 60 million dollar man, or just avoid the pressure of playing in front of the Eyes of Texas. Maybe he just wants to be help us all out by making one SEC defense a little less overrated.

I don’t know his reasons, and I doubt anyone here does. Hopefully, he weighed everything and came to a decision that’s best for himself and his family. He may not have made the decision that any of us around here would have made but he did what’s best for him, and in the end, for Texas as well. He shouldn’t be ripped for that. I wish him the best, geaux tigers and all that.

That’s dumb. That’s not the way recruiting works.

That was an overstatement....

…I blame beer for helping me bill little it up.

Here are Mack’s words from his 2008 signing day press conference, via PB

“Texas is a different place, the tradition here, the history here, if you didn’t grow up with our history and tradition and you don’t know how special this place is, then you’re one-of-five (choices for a player). I don’t want us to be one-of-five. I want us to one-of-one or one-of-two. Maybe that’s wrong, but I want guys that love it here, I want guys that are crying when they walk out of that tunnel. On senior day, I want all the moms and dad there. That’s just the way I am and the way I feel. When they say we are one-of-five, then I say you’re (down to) one-of-four because I’m out.”

He is not an idiot
Anyone have any idea why this idiot refuses to be a Longhorn?

It could possibly be because we have two freshmen starting at Safety, and two more on the two-deep. Also, not liking to become a longhorn doesn’t automatically make a person and idiot.

PS. 2010 Dixon is a Texas lean, we will be fine. Not to mention Gideon was a 2-star.

Idiot, indeed

Not wanting to become a Longhorn is idiotic — it automatically makes a person an idiot. Where are we?!?! Everyone should want to play in the Lone Star State over Sportsman’s Paradise. This is a Longhorn blog for Pete’s sake. Of course people are going to say that.

You should not be surprised to hear this. I’m still bitter over Darrell Scott. I’m still bitter over Perriloux-ser. I’m still bitter over John Brantley. Not because we need them, but because we gave them the opportunity to play at the greatest school, in the greatest city, and in the greatest state and they shafted us. This is a little different, given that Loston did not ever commit to us, however, he will incur the curse nonetheless. (i.e., Brantley (have fun playing behind Cameron Newton!) and Perriloux-ser (Jacksonville State! Really!?!?!).)

He won't represent Texas high school talent in a positive way

since he’s not playing in the state of Texas. Have fun in LOSERanna Loston
