Texas 28 OSU 24: #1 Longhorns to 8-0
Postgame React will be along shortly. In the meantime, this is your postgame celebration thread. And yes, you should celebrate. Some of the comments in today's game thread were astonishing, to say the least. Memo to the masses: Oklahoma State is good. Really.
Today's Question: Can Texas beat a very good football team when it doesn't quite have its A-game?
Today's Answer: Yes.
We head to Lubbock undefeated. Celebrate it.

All the credit to OSU. That is the best OSU team I have ever seen. Someone please tell me Kendall Hunter is draft eligible.

I'm surprised
that people are surprised that this was such a close game.
it was an incredibly exciting game that I am thrilled to have won. outside of his two turnovers (in which I am in NO way trying to overlook), Colt had a career game and we came up with two of the most amazing end zone catches Ive ever seen, defense held out when defenses are supposed to hold out.
the run defense was sketchy, but they came into this game wanting it more than they ever have before. arguably the biggest game in recent osu history. i am loving this outcome.

I was a bit surprised to find that
our running game is back to square one…OG didnt look very quick or fast, Colt was taking some big shots
I think overall our players are gassed/tired of playing against elite competition week in and week out….

right but also
OSU has never been known to be “tough”. Yes we have wont past 10 games against them, but Les Miles/Gundy’s OSU team always lacked competitiveness and the strength to pull one out at the end of the game.
In this game, the kept battling and coming back from 14 point deficit (we kinda let them as well), which is something i have never seen under Mike Gundy’s OSU team.

I caught it on TV.....
As ABC did a close up on their QB right after the game was over and the final pass was knocked down, he called one of our guys an f*$%ing P*ssy. I don’t know who it was he was talking to. I imagine that’s what started it. I had to back up the shot and look at it again to make sure I really saw what I thought I saw. Sure enough, i did.
Honestly, as I was watching it on TV it looked like Gundy was about to have another one of those press conference rants on our players and coaches. Mack was trying to be the gentleman and calm him down. Had I been Mack I would have told him to get his arrogant ass off our field and that he better not touch or speak to any of our players.

Awesome, Gutty Win Today
1) I thought OSU was overrated coming into the game, so I was a little surprised.
2) I didn’t think the D played to its standard today. Lots of missed tackles.
3) That being said, D came up big in the 4th Quarter.
4) OSU lived up to its rating. GUNDY is a MAN. And a good coach. Hats off, except to whoever it was that kicked Shipley in the head. Cheap freaking shot.

next week should be better
I think Texas just looked a little tired out there today. And a win is a win, but it was a bit closer than I would have liked. However, I think we are going to hand it to Tech next week. We beat opponents in day games by 18.67 points on average. In night games, we beat our opponents by 32.4 points on average. Could be just a coincidence (and yes, we have played most of the better teams in day games) but I think we look better in night games.

this team was simply emotionally spent. period.
and i’m not saying that they should have to be motivated every game….b/c let’s face it this is the two undefeated top 10 teams from the same conference playing each other – so they SHOULD be up for the game. But let’s face it folks this is the 3rd top 11 team IN A ROW they had to play and sometimes it’s just not as easy to get up for games after two absolutely season defining wins.
for those of you over reacting that we only won by 4 at home with what i would argue our B- game, take it for what it is. we won – against a very good OSU team (who would have thought!) so let’s enjoy this one. yeah the kick off coverage sucked, yeah the D got shredded by the run, and yeah colt made a few bad plays down the stretch. but we are now 8-0 and still rolling heading in to Lubbock next week.
I think many of you have said it already – we were spoiled by the absolute domination last weekend against Mizzou. This was not last week, clearly. But none-the-less a GREAT win. Couldn’t be happier with this team.
Enjoy this one Horns!

Agree
We beat yet another top 10 team…that’s 3 in a row, and they’re not all supposed to be as easy as Missouri.
The cause for concern is a lot of regression to the 2007 mean. For example:
- Shoddy special teams coverage in the first half
- The return of Careless Colt
- WAY too many missed tackles and defensive players out of position
- A complete abandonment of the running game (a la, uninspired offensive playcalling)
- The inability to punch the ball into the endzone during goal-line situations
- etc., etc.
With that said, and without having read the game threads, what I saw were two DAMN good football teams that both put on solid performances. No, it wasn’t the A+ fireworks show that we saw last week, but we made plays that matter (forgiving the ones we let go). Take a deep breath, drink a beer to calm your nerves, and let’s get set for next week. Because Tech is just as good as OSU, and we won’t have the home crowd to stuff Dez Bryant (although I’m sure Michael Crabtree would’ve said F it, I’m running the fly route) on 4th and 6.
by jc25 on Oct 25, 2008 7:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree completly
I think this was the cause for concern in the game threads…all the mistakes we have seen before. Some of the comments were whiskey fueled for sure (fire coaches really??) but we do have some warning sign all of which you listed.
Yes it was a great victory but for fans who live and die by every missed tackle or blown coverage, every mistake (and good play) is magnified. Some of that comes out in the gameday thread and it is ok to be somewhat negative. That’s the nature of fans who probably care more than we should about 19 year old kids playing a game.
by UT2001 on Oct 25, 2008 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The return of Careless Colt?
1 bad throw and a run that he stayed up too long on and unfortunately lost the football constitutes the return of Careless Colt? I don’t agree. Two plays in an otherwise FLAWLESS SEASON against the best team we’ve played so far! That to me showed that OSU is good and that Colt felt like he had to try a little too much without much of a running game. But, not the return of Carelss Colt.
I think today’s win was a GREAT win. We played pretty well despite looking tired. We couldn’t stop a very well balanced offense and still found a way to win. These are wins Championsip Teams make!

Re:
A 20 something kid is joking around with his friends and re-enacting the unusual events (obviously solicited from teammates) that put their team up either 7 or 21 points. Graham Harrell is a jerk, but it’s not because he’s having a laugh with his teammates on the sideline after a successful play that resulted in an unusual delayed-touchdown call by an injured ref. My dad walked into the room after the play and asked what happened, I did the exact same thing Harrell did. Am I immoral? Have I wronged the ref?
Somewhere along the way of this relatively harmless series of events you suggest:
No human being deserves to be treated like that just for doing his job.
Treated like what, exactly? Does Graham Harrell tell the cameras to pay attention while he mimics the refs? Are players henceforth not allowed to horse around with their teammates? What is it you think happened to the ref? He was injured, our quarterback re-enacted the event to his teammates. Who was morally mistreated “just for doing” their job? Did Harrell say anything to the ref? Did he do anything besides have a laugh with his teammates?
It is one thing to suggest that a kid probably, mildly improperly had a laugh at a ref’s unusual injury with his teammates in what turned out to be an abnormally public setting. It is quite another to suggest that a person was wronged simply because the cameras were rolling at the wrong time during what is typically a very private moment on the sideline among friends. Nothing bad happened at all. The ref hurt himself, hobbled around for a moment, then called touchdown on a great catch by The Elf. Graham Harrell was excited about it and re-enacted the event to his teammates, and the cameras happened to be rolling. No one was wronged here. It is CFB.
I hate you.

I really hope
he entertains us next by reenacting Joe Theismann’s injury. Or perhaps he can show us what Tom Brady’s injury looked like, ha, ha ,ha.
Even better, he can show us what it looked like when that ump, McSherry, had a heart attack on the baseball field several years ago. Wow, he can make a whole comedy act of this stuff once he’s out of football.
Oh yeah, who thinks that being on the field with tens of thousands of fans, on national television, knowing many cameras are rolling at all times is ever “typically a very private moment…among friends”?
by tdwalsh on Oct 25, 2008 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Re:
1) There is no comparison between what happened to the ref on the field today (single person injury where he was otherwise fine, walked away, was capable of making the call in spite of the injury) and, say, Joe Theismann having his leg broken by another player, or some baseball ump who had a life threatening heart attack on the field. In any event, neither of those injuries would have lended themselves to an explanation to teammates who were trying to figure out what happened. This particular ref hurt his own ankle somehow, then managed to hop it off and call a touchdown. It was an unusual and, fortunately, largely victim free.
2) Not everything that happens on a sideline is caught on camera. Graham Harrell wasn’t screaming at the cameras or otherwise drawing attention to himself when he explained ot his teammates what had happened. No one went and insulted the ref. The point from above is that nothing was done TO the ref. It’s a bunch of kids clowning around about an unusual event on the field. You’re not entitled to that moment. And nothing about it is publicly directed, in spite of the crowds or the televisions about.
I have absolutely no idea why 2-3 Texas fans are trying to make a big deal out of something that was not a big deal at all. A ref injured his foot, he survived, and Graham Harrell reenacted the happening to a couple of teammates. We scored a touchdown on the play. Somehow from that it is Harrell “making fun of the ref " to such a degree that would warrant a moral hammer throw down of "No human being deserves to be treated like that just for doing his job.”
Again, I ask, treated like what? What the fuck was done to the ref? If I want to read a bunch of blubbering pussies get righteously indignant over non-events, I’d spend more time at TexAgs. No one died here. A kid hopped on one leg and then put his hands in the air. It’s not every day that a ref sustains injury but still manages to make the touchdown call, and that might seem remarkable to a couple 20 somethings who didn’t see the play.
I cannot believe this conversation is going on. You read something on TexAgs, you laugh, and you say “There is absolutely no possible way any sensible human being could agree with what is stated here” and then I come to an otherwise intelligent website and read… Graham Harrell has morally wronged a ref by talking with his teammates about something that just happened? Worse yet, you’re comparing it to Joe Theismann’s injury and a heart attack?

By the way, some positives
- McGee continued to look healthy
- First half Colt was a machine
- The Shipley-Colt connection makes me wish for a bromance
- The pass protection was spectacular
- Colt’s continuing to look in the direction of the youngsters
- Henry Melton had possibly his best game of the year
- Muck was solid, as always
- The continuous double-team on Dez Bryant (kind of) shut down the passing game
- Mack gave Scott and Malcolm Williams a chance on a kick-off that matters (which they fouled up, but hey, at least Mack tried)
- Muschamp continously looked incredibly angry at our defensive miscues

I liked the drops on inconsequential downs.
You know they’re going to drop a few over the season. For Shipley and Quan, that’s probably a ridiculously low number. So, when they drop one on what is an inconsequential down, they won’t miss any for a pretty good spell. They let their attention lapse, for whatever reason. When it gets serious, they focus more.

The game
I have to admit, I haven’t been used to seeing Texas turnovers recently, but Colt can’t be perfect every game. The thing that impresses me is the 3rd down performance (11-14) in this game and the Missouri game. That being said, some of my notes:
1. As mentioned, Texas has been sick on 3rd down, I wonder how long that’s going to last. (I’d say between 70-75% the last 2 games).
2. Our kickoff coverage was terrible in the first half (suspect for parts of the season as well), we would have likely had a bigger lead at half if not for that.
3. Lots of missed tackles on defense through most of the game. That being said, the D came through when it mattered after Colt’s fumble.
4. We didn’t run the ball very well at all today.
5. We won, that’s all the really matters.

2-3. OSU runners hit the hole fast. The RBs got to the LB level many times before the LBs could react and get in position. Well designed attack in that respect. KOs got good blocking and the returner really hit the seam well. After that, the talent takes over. Little mistakes in position get amplified when burned. The coaches will say they lost discipline on KOs.
4. Couldn’t get outside well, couldn’t overpower easily inside tackles. Think they’re better than OU DL? Sure seemed like it.
5. Winning while playing relatively poorly is exactly what you want from a team.

Concerns that must be addressed
1. Kickoff returns – reminds me of the Michigan Rose bowl where they kept running back kickoffs to the 50 every time. Saw same issue against Missouri and exposed yesterday by OSU. Texas would have a great drive and build momentum and special teams play on the kickoff gave it away. Tech has a great return team and could change the game – we cannot give the ball to Tech constantly near midfield.
2. Tackling. I know Will was upset with this yesterday, especially the amount of arm tackling and Texas tackles where we “assumed” the OSU player would go down and not follow through. Do this to Crabtree and he will kill you.
3. Running game. We kept trying to go with a sweep run that really never worked. Most disappointing was inability to push ball into end zone at end of game with first down near the one. We must be able to run ball on Tech (like last year) and have long drives resulting in touchdowns that eat the clock and keep Tech offense off the field.
