I've Been Wrong Before

Here is a portion of my post from Friday, Oct 24.

Texas' body of work is much better up to this point that Oklahoma State's.  Yes, they both played weak non-conference schedules but the teams on the Texas schedule were more competitive than Okie States.  Texas fans, dont even worry about tomorrow....this one is gonna be sick!   You are about to see a better than usual OKST team tommorrow but their best wont even be enough to make a show of it...even if something catastrophic happens to a player or a big play on special teams happens.  The Marine predicts, "Texas 52-Oklahoma State 28"

Okay, I was wrong.  Big Time.  I was so wrong on all counts including special teams play.  I even shot off at the mouth to PB about how he was gonna only be able to afford Peanut butter to eat after he lost a side bet with me.  I was shocked at the outcome of this game.  The truth is, I shouldn't be.  We played way too conservatively and we are very fortunate to have walked out of DKR with a win.  The Oklahoma State team that showed up was dang impressive.  I mentioned in last Friday's post that I felt OKST would rush for over 100 yards but that Zac would be on his back most of the afternoon.  My hat (no pun intended) is off to the Cowboys for playing one hell of a game.

Defense wins championships and this is why we will win; because of our defense and the way they played.  Yes, we were gashed for a ton on the ground but we kept dez out of action.  Yes, it did allow the TE to have a field day but I am confident that Coach Muschamp will make the necessary adjustments for this weeks blockbuster encounter.

Offensively, the usual suspects showed up.  The Bromance roommate connection, Quan had a big day, and Colt continues to burn the record books.  I know this may sound like a stupid question, but does our running game suck?  someone said to me that they have seen enough to be convinced that it does but what about what we did to Missouri and even Oklahoma?  We have the talent no doubt but did we struggle on the ground because we suck or becasue OKST rush defense was THAT good?  I will make one small prediction for the Tech game....we will have a better outing on the ground than we did against OKST.  I have also heard a lot of talk about Colt having a poor outing.  I know I am biased but iw ould say the same about Sam or Chase if this was said about them with Colt's numbers on saturday; That's just stupid.  He had an awesome day.  He made a bad throw and fumbled towards the end but it was because he was trying to make something happen not because he was careless or playing bad.

So my Monday predictions are these:

Texas Running game will be much improved come Saturday night and texas defense will play much tighter.  But we need to improve the mindset offensively.  It seemed like we played too conservative.  any agreements or arguments?  Semper Fidelis and Hook em'

I think we all underestimated the Pokes.

That team came to play. Their only impressive win before, at MiZZOU, seemed to be more a result of Chase Daniel struggling than OSU playing defense. Maybe, their D had more to do with it then I gave them credit for as well.

Running game is a product of our opposition

man, there is so much harping on the running game and it just amazes me. We play in the big 12, were being able to run the ball does not nearly guarantee victory. Quite frankly, the coaching staff knew what most fans did not dare think — OSU will likely be the best team the Horns play until January.

Let’s look at what the offense acheived Saturday – Colt collected nearly 400 yards passing, we had over 500 yards of total offense, we held the ball for over 33 minutes, and we were 11 of 14 on third down. That tells me we executed the gameplan about as well as we could have.

Prior to that we posted similar stats against Missouri, and showed great balance against a tough OU front 7. Its easy be nitpick after one game, but the body of work seems to suggest that this team is capable of running and passing and can beat a defense (and take time of the clock) doing either.

I feel you

Without you and I actually playing the game, because we probably both suck at it compared to our boys, do you think that

the body of work seems to suggest that this team is capable of running and passing and can beat a defense (and take time of the clock) doing either
can translate into a win. I am 100% with you on the fact that OSU might be the best team that we play this year, maybe even better than Oklahoma who still sucks. I also agree, albeit hesitantly, that the ability to run the ball doesn’t necessarily translate into wins. However, when you can run the ball like OSU did against us, it sure postures you for success. That is my MAIN concern…if we cannot do that against a better than normal Tech defense, we will lose because of our inability to maintain balance. Our offense can rack up yards, stats, points, etc. but we were exposed against a very good team. Rushing defense and our own ability to run the ball are now suspect. Of course this all moot if it turns out that OSU just flat out played good football which I would argue that they did do just that.
If on Saturday against Tech we run the ball like we did against Missouruh then we will both most likely agree that we can run the ball but struggled to do so against a great OSU team simply becuase they were a great team. But if we struggle it puts a lot of emphasis on Colt and the passing game, which we all know already. Im not turning on the lights or anything here, we all know all of these things, but i just think that unless we loosen up a little we will be in for some hurt.
There was a very distinct difference in the way we played against OU sucks and OSU. we played with cojones made of alibaster in Dallas but, to this guy, it seemed that we played with some hesitation this past Saturday. Aside from the stats that you wrote, and I agree with you that it showed extreme success on the offensive side of the ball and our playmaking ability, i just think that we played a little timidly during some series’. I by NO MEANS am referring to the players or their attitudes but the actual play calling. Thats all. I hope that I am wrong about all of this on Saturday and that we dominate like I know we can. semper fidelis

Offense

That offense that played “way too conservatively” held the ball for 7 more minutes than OSU, which in my opinion was the difference in this game.

T.O.P.

I have to agree. I’ve only recently developed an appreciation for time of possession as a defensive tactic. Not only do you keep the opposing offense off of the field, but you wear down their defense and potentiate scoring later in the game (I think). This seems to me like an extremely important part of our game plan against Texas Tech.

TOP, part 2

Look at last year. We had sustained scoring drives, they scored fast. By the end of the game, they were too gassed to keep us out of the endzone. Our last few drives never had more than four or so plays. Our D was still fresh enough to make some stops and seal the game. TOP is largely overrated, but it really showed up there.

Regarding the Running Game

OSU’s D performed very well against our run attack, so much so that we pretty much gave up on it.

I feel like this is a product of OSU’s offense- they see the run all the time in practice, and are very well rehersed at making stops. We suffered from the opposite- our pass heavy practices give us little experience at stopping power runs.

Going into next week’s game, I think that our running will look more like (but not as good as) we did vs. Mizzou. I don’t think that Tech’s has the athletes or the practice experience to can our RBs that way that OSU did. Seriously, I’ve never seen so much containment out of mostly six-in-the-box sets.
