How to get aggy to cancel their TM subscription?
I just received the new issue of Texas Monthly, and aggy ain't gonna like it much.
The cover has a pic of Mack, DeD, DKR, Augie and the Lady Coaches (Rick was obviously out of town!) with the caption:
LONGHORNS, INC. - How UT built the most successful college sports program of all time.
I haven't read the article, but plan to do so before PB & Co. come on the interwebsradioshow.
I dare any of you to set foot in HEB or Walgreen's and not find your way to the magazine rack, where on page 142 you'll read:
In the arms race to build the fanciest stadiums, hire the best coaches, and attract the top athletes, the University of Texas is unrivaled: Its athletics program is the most profitable—and most successful—of any school in history.
Hook 'em Texas Monthly!

That pic is worthless
without Rick.

Is that Goestenkors? She's done absolutely nothing at Texas. Barnes should be there...
Maybe he was busy…… RECRUITING.
Cut Coach G some slack
She’s only been here one year, and in that year she managed to get the team back to the Tourney (into the second round, at that) and she recruited 2 Parade All Americans in her first recruiting class. The progress is already showing. Other coaches have noticed, too: Texas was voted 2nd in the conference by the coaches preseason rankings.
In all seriousness
didn’t TM run an article on Gates and how/if he could “save the aggies” a couple of years ago while he was still president of TAMU? I didn’t read the article but I remember seeing the cover (I don’t know if it was pro/con)
Maybe they should run a counter cover on the travesty that is A&M football. err, I mean, rebuilding years ;)
Gates: Can this guy save the Aggies?
Probably, if it were even possible, but he got a better offer.
You can read it here, if you know the double-secret password: [Lance Armstrong’s hometown]
My headline on this fanpost was actually in reference to this Nov-06 article on Gates. Most of my Aggie friends canceled their subscription after it ran.
Robert Gates helped win the cold war as director of the CIA, but that assignment was a walk in the park compared with his current one: bringing Texas A&M university’s unique but not always admired culture into the modern era and remaking the way the world views Aggieland—and the way Aggieland views the world.
Even from the inside, Dr. Gates had trouble understanding it, so what chance does the rest of the world have? It’s not keeping me awake at night.
(Carsondude, you are an objective rival, thanks for being the anti-beergut.)
Gates
Admittingly, I don’t have much insight as to the internal feelings pre-Gates but I know that since the early 90’s the school has exploded. The city as well. As of late the school (and city honestly) have been reaching a saturation point and he did a good job of guiding the school through this juncture and putting goals in place for an excellent future. Of course, whether those goals will be reached or not is to be seen but every aggie that I know believes that his views are the A&M of the future and his plan (Vision 2020 or something) should guide every high level decision the school makes.
When choosing a replacement, the main criteria I heard was that the candidate be a fan of his work and be willing to follow almost exactly in the direction he had laid out. Of course, time will tell which paths the school will take and almost more importantly, how the “outside world” perceives them.
The culture? It would be easy to argue that just about every college has it’s own perceived identity or culture and that entering students pick up that culture regardless of their involvement in orientation style camps (fish camp). But like I said, the university is exploding and has freshman classes certainly rivaling the size of any other school in the nation. With this influx of students, it is impossible to instill a consistent culture, pride, or even “honor code”. Many fear this reality and are trying even harder to push the “A&M culture” of the past. But this is diminishing. I think A&M will always have a conservative, “aggie” culture regardless of freshman class size just as perhaps UT will always have a “liberal” student base. People usually fall into their perceived environments, even if it is not consistent with their prior beliefs.
That’s probably a lot more information then anyone expected, but hey, you can always skim it. Also, I appreciate your comment about my objectivity. I’m only slightly non-objective toward Tech. I hope you burn down the stadium on Saturday.
Gates did some great things re:academics
Gates was good about reworking the way hirings were done in academic departments. A&M had become too accustomed to hiring from within for deans and adminstration, which led to an environment where you had no new thinking. Gates changed all that.
Even from the inside, Dr. Gates had trouble understanding it,
Actually, one of the reasons Gates is so popular with Aggies is that he did get “it”.
Re: this new edition of TM.
That cover makes me laugh.
DeLo$$ Dodds doesn’t belong on the cover, b/c he doesn’t make the big decisions when it comes to hirings (see Mack Brown).
While texas may be one of the most profitable athletic departments in the nation, calling it “the most successful college sports program of all time” is ridiculous, and reeks of homerism.
They have yet to win a national title in men’s basketball, or pull an unlikely double like Florida did in ‘06-’07.
texas couldn’t even win the Lone Star Showdown with A&M last year.
I’m really not trying to bag on texas’ athletic department here, but “most successful of all time” is a little ridiculous to claim.
Beergut
It’s much too early to point out the fact that Deloss Dodds is the reason the UT Athletics programs facilities are in such great shape right now. This alone is a huge factor in attracting athletic talent to Austin.
Y’all have Dewey the Cloned Deer, a dog wearing a cape, and slap happy milk men as cheerleaders.
UT has pom pom girls wearing chaps, the Godzillatron and 4 national championships.
And the last time I looked judging your program by the faults of our program does not a successful program make.
Wikipedia says that y’all have won 5 national championships among your 20 varsity programs. The article of course mentions that UT is your main rival, and it also states the following: “Other rivalries include Texas Tech, Baylor University, and the recently renewed rivalry with the University of Arkansas.” Seriously, dude? Baylor? Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Wikipedia says that Texas has won 48 national championships among our 18 varsity programs. Texas has two rivals: Oklahoma and A&M. Other schools consider us to be their rivals, but they have to beat us first for us to consider their legitimacy.
I love you, man, but yer maroon ass is showing!
It's Mean to Ween
hahaha
I don’t think you can find out who a school deems their rival to be by looking at “wikipedia”. That honestly has to be a joke.
It’s not like the student body votes on what to put on wikipedia, especially who their rivals are. You do know that one person can edit any page on wikipedia. The A&M Student body and alumni doesn’t run the site.
Agreed
I’m not sure the Ags will be able to consider it a rivalry after Robert Griffin spanks them four years running.
ahahah
I looked at Wikipedia to get the data on number of national championships. I thought the thing about Baylor being a rival to aggie was funny.
So, carsondude, who exactly do you think is responsible for adding info about the ags to wikipedia? If not the student body or the alums, would it be the administration? Because, that’s even MORE embarrassing for aggie to be rivals to Baylor.
It's Mean to Ween
that's my point
it’s not the administration. Anyone can do it. A&M fans, Baylor fans, Ball St. fans, junior high students, etc.
Swimming Coach
Isn’t our swimming coach supposed to be some kind of bad ass, too? Shouldn’t he be on the cover??

swimming AND track coaches
Are both badasses. Case in point: Bubba Thornton (track) and Eddie Reese (swimming) were the head coach of the US Men’s Olympic teams in Beijing this past summer. If I remember correctly, the US swimmers were kinda successful there.
From the sound of the article and funds at their disposal, if UT doesn’t win a national championship in every sport every other year it could be viewed as abject failure.
A RB coach making $250,000? Y’all aren’t getting your money’s worth out of that one.
I think we are getting returns in other places.
While the RB situation may seem bleak on the surface, there are other areas that seem to be better and most of us here on BON believe the Major has something to do with it. Since you don’t follow Texas as closely as we do (and I don’t fault you for that) you would not notice that. Now it can also be said we are looking through very burnt orange tinted glasses but the general feeling is we have seen better (esp pre-ou) game planning from Davis and maybe some hints give to Colt.
whatever
Continue thinking it’s Major influence on Davis. Keep not giving the credit when so freaking obviously due.
In Mack Brown We Trust!
Don't want to get in a pissing match,
but I was not taking any credit from Davis. Except for the VY era, we always ultra conservative until AFTER the second weekend in October. The only thing different from the years past is Major. Really I could care less, I’m just glad we did something BEFORE/DURING the RRS. Now I have read Colt has asked Major for advice and gives it when asked. I think this has corrected some of the issues we saw in “bad” Colt. I think Major has also shown the RBs how to read defenses. That was something Major has done better than anyone.
I really was not trying to BBQ Davis. I was one who wanted his head prior to the VY era, but all I might do now is grumble. As has been theorized here on BON, it may not be all Davis but maybe MB holding the leash.
One certain area of credit due major ...
… is taking care of the ball. RBs are not putting it on the ground like in years past. Remember JC’s slippery fingers? Why didn’t Davis address that problem before?
Come on, dude. I’ve never liked GD. I DO give him credit for improving his aggressiveness this year. But it would be stupid/silly to give him ALL the credit, if you have any clue about recent history.
Watch out, I bite.

Major might be the reason for our win over OU
That 4-wide, no TE set we started using there had not been used by Greg Davis in 8 years. The QB those 8 years ago: Major.
He’s having a huge influence in other places than RB.
Umm
Of course it’s a failure not to win a national championship.
Someone sounds bitter.
