Mike Leach...

Ok...Maybe this is just me...

But everytime I see Mike Leach on tv, he just looks extremely pissed off...Now I know he was upset with big12 officials last year with the Texas and TTU game...but damn son...It's good for your health to smile.

Actually now that i think about it...i don't think I would be smiling much if had to face UT's D...and Will muschamp...

Give em Hell Horns!! Hook em!!

I'm a Texas fan

And I love Mike Leach. Always quotable, often times hilarious. The dude was a lawyer and one day just said “F it…I want to coach football.” And look where he has his team now. He marches to the beat of his own drum and I respect the hell out of the guy. When (if) he gets hired away to a bigger job, I’ll miss having him in the Big 12.

Ha!

It took folks in Lubbock about five years to get used to him. I’m still not sure what to make of the guy outside of football. He was on the Herd yesterday and they didn’t mention this game at all. They talked about Pepperdine Law School, politics, why he became a coach, why he went to law school, his rugby experience. It was a trip.

He's wanted out of Lubbock for a while now.

A 10-2 or 11-1 season should finally punch his ticket out of town.

I can't dispute that

I know you’re about to catch a ton of flak for that comment…but it’s SOO hard to climb into Leach’s head and figure him out. Some are convinced he’s sincere when he say’s he loves Lubbock – and I believe him. But others will say he won’t up and move his family. I think that’s flimsy at best. There are a TON of great college towns in this country and there are some very attractive jobs that will open up this year. It’s like anything, though. After 9 years, is it time to try something else just to do it? I’ve felt that way in my career even though the current job was a very good job. It still crosses your mind.

But I also think he’s smart enough to realize there are some places where he’s just not a great fit with his personality. Tennessee jumps out to me as a place he would forever be an outsider, even if he won.

Tech, I heard it too..

And Leach was as good as advertised. The Big 12 will miss him when he departs to greener pastures.

Could you imagine..

If he was able coach somewhere that could consistently recruit players like Crabtree. The talent level has increased since he has been there, but still no match for the big powerhouse schools.

I would love to see him at a SEC school and watch him hang 50 points on all those “Great defenses”. What would all the SEC bitches say then?

Thankfully...

…Tech is slooooowwwly making recruiting inroads. In years past, our roster was full of 2-star kids, with a few 3-star thrown in. Then we’d just coach ’em up as best we could.

Now, we’re getting mostly 3-stars with several 4-stars each season. The talent level is creeping up, ableit slowly, but it’s getting there. I don’t think Tech will ever be able to compete with Texas or OU on that front just because most people can’t. Regionally, there’s not enough rooom for a ton of powerhouses on the recruiting trail. Someone has to be the underdog most of the time. As long as we get good coaching and scheming, I don’t mind.

You are right..

I remember Harrell coming out of Ennis High School, if I remember correctly he set the state record for passing yards. Everyone in the DFW area new at one point he would be a great college QB. That was a pretty big pick up then when he signed. I mean you can atleast count on signing the guys who in years past would have went to A&M. Terrance Bullitt signed with you guys this year and his brother Melvin played safety at A&M a couple years back, and he is now with the colts. I believe their Dad went to A&M as well.

And next in line

Is RS Frosh Stephan Louks from Arkansas. He holds the record for most yards in Arkansas high school history (13,000 yds+ and about 150 TDs…5A level quality of competition – though I believe Arkansas has 6A as well). Chose Tech over Auburn and Mizzou.

On the hook for this year’s class is Jacob Karam out of Friendswood HS…4-star…chose Tech (if he signs) over Mizzou, Louisville, Arizona, and OU. Top 20 at QB in the nation.

But you know, you can never tell with QBs coming out of HS.

Tech QB's

Of all the QB’s that have been there since Leach has, which one is considered the greatest in the Tech fandom? If Harrell is the obvious answer who is next in line?

by Hookem4life84 on Oct 31, 2008 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a good question

Really, Harrell is the only multi-year starter since the original Leach QB, Kliff Kingsbury. For three seasons, we cycled through one year starters…BJ Symons, Cody Hodges and Sonny Cumbie. Hard to be especially fond of a one year starter – not enough memories from them, though I enjoyed them all.

KK has a unique place in our hearts because he was not only a good QB, but he was freaking nails. He got absolutely destroyed the first two years in the system, even though our record was decent. How he just survived the pounding he took made us all stand up and applaud when he left.

So, I’m not sure Harrell is the all-time favorite, to be honest. To me, Kingsbury holds that honor.

by Tech92 on Oct 31, 2008 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

side note

Part of my affinity for Kingsbury is the fact that at the time, only a select handful of QBs had played in the spread. So he didn’t grow up playing that offense like every HS kid coming out today does.

The fact that he was kind of an innovator in my eyes also makes him special. He had to learn it on the fly…and was nearly killed doing it.

by Tech92 on Oct 31, 2008 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kingsbury

For some reason, I thought you were going to say that. I don’t know why, but for now he sticks out in my mind as being the guy. I’m sure as Harrell moves on he will dethrone KK of that position. The funny thing is tomorrow night may in fact determine Harrell’s legacy at Tech.

The only thing I can’t get out of mind head is that I know this girl who dated KK right after he left Tech, and I heard stories about him going to the bars while he was still in school wearing his own jersey. That’s more of a side thought, not really any bearing on his legacy there. Just thought I would throw that out there.

He doesn't buy into the media hook

He could care less about answering questions about football, he lets the performance of the team speak for him. Same reason he is not allowing Graham and Crab to speak to the media this week. They have a job to do and they will come to work on the field.

Mike Leach should have been a character on Arrested Development

He and the rest of the cast wouldn’t have missed a beat.

Why Would Leach Take A Different Job?

Besides more $$$, not living in Lubbock, or other box answers…

I mean, this quirky dude has his own kingdom out there in the desert. He draws the exact kind of players that he wants for his system, and everyone loves him. Why would he want to go take over a different culture and go to the trouble of building another program from scratch?

by Tackchevy on Oct 31, 2008 3:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

His name has been batted around for several jobs in the past.

Anyone know why jobs have not been offered? It doesn’t seem to be a secret that he wants out of Lubbock.

Leach

He is clearly an eccentric genius. I hope he stays in Lubbock for 100 years.

I really like how Leach has given the Red Raiders a “Pirate” identity. The Red Raider was sort of an ambigous figure before.
