Yes, I know this whole Gary Danielson thing is kind of overplayed, and you are probably tired of hearing about it, but I just had to share this with you. The earlier quote which has been getting the most attention was from FoxSports Radio. NOW THIS on CBSsports.com.
"I really believe for half the schools that don't run the spread, you cannot find a quarterback in the country that can beat out Matthew Stafford. For the other half of the schools that do run the spread, I don't think you can find a quarterback in the country that could beat out Tim Tebow. This week we have the perfect spread quarterback facing off against the perfect pro-style quarterback. They are the two best quarterbacks in the country."
If you really look at his quotes first he is saying Stafford is the best QB in the nation because he runs a pro-style offense and everyone else is "junk". Then after sleeping on that comment he realized he would be calling a game in which Georgia is playing Florida. I'm sure he woke up and said "Oh shit, I basically just called Florida's offense led by Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, junk...I need to fix this." So then he comes out today and calls it a "spread offense" and Tebow is the best QB at executing that offense, which obviously means In Gary Danielson’s world..
Stafford=Best pro-style Qb, Tebow=Best Spread QB, =2 best Qbs in the nation.
Again, that makes no sense and he contradicts himself. For one does has he watched any games outside the SEC?
I won't even touch on the Stafford being the best pro-style QB, but to say Tebow is the perfect spread QB is insane. First I guarantee if Florida was playing in the Big 12 he would slam Florida's offense. For one the spread version Florida runs produced..ALEX SMITH! Now that is the epitome of JUNK. I am no way knocking Tebow, I thoroughly enjoy watching him play, he won the Heisman LAST YEAR for a reason, but this year he does even come close to playing with Colt on any level. QB Rating, Passing Yards, Completion %, RUSHING YARDS, etc... You name it, everything, but interceptions Colt has better stats. Ok, I know "stats are for losers" well then what do call someone who loses to South Carolina.
One more quick rant, since when is the spread "junk", I'm no football genius and by Mack's standards I'm "stupid", but the principles of the spread are basically stolen from the West Coast Offense. I know there are variations of both, but both stretch the field horizontically, and utilize the short to mid range passing game religiously, which creates holes in the middle of the defense for the running game to exploit. I know that is over-simplifying it, but you catch my drift, right? The west coast offense is a staple of many NFL offenses and no one considers it junk.
