Texas-OU Game Week Contest
In lieu of rewarding the weekly prize for the pick 'em this week, we're doing a special Texas-Oklahoma pick 'em contest. Points are awarded as described in each category. Leave your entry in the comments; submissions due by kickoff.
Each contestant starts with a score of 0. Lowest score wins a copy of Rose Bowl Dreams and a BON t-shirt. If winning score is less than 0, winner also receives a Texas shirt/poster/whatever-they want, from any online retailer you choose, $60 value or less).
1. Total points for Texas = __________ (Add difference between actual and predicted to your score)
2. Total points for Oklahoma = __________ (Add difference between actual and predicted to your score)
3. Margin of victory = Texas by ______ or Oklahoma by _______ (Add difference between actual and predicted to your score. e.g. predicted OU by 8 when Texas actually wins by 7 = +15 difference)
4. Total offense for Texas = ______ yards (Multiply difference between predicted and actual and multiply by 0.1, rounding up as appropriate. Add to your total score. E.g. Predicted 410, Actual 456 = +5 points to your score (46 yards x 0.1 = 4.6, rounded up to 5.)
5. Total offense for Oklahoma = ______ yards (Same scoring as in #4)
6. More passing yards: McCoy or Bradford (Subtract 5 points for correct answer)
7. Texas net rushing yards = over/under 135 (Subtract 5 points for correct answer)
8. Team leading at halftime: Texas / Oklahoma / Tie Game (Subtract 5 points for correct answer)
9. Jordan Shipley net receiving yards = over/under 90 (Subtract 5 points for correct answer)
10. Texas AP Ranking on Sunday afternoon = _______. (Subtract 10 points if exact. Subtract 5 points if within 1 spot of actual. Subtract 3 points if within 2 spots of actual.)
Good luck, and Hook 'Em!

Believe me
it hurts me more than you think, but I really want that damn book (i have finished with the second best score twice dammit)
Isn’t #3 a bit superfluous given the first two questions? Either you stick by your first two answers and the third just beefs up your score, or you go wild with #3 to cover for fucking up #1/#2. Am I missing the point of this one?

yes and no
You could get both 1 & 2 wrong, Say 35 30 but still get three correct. the first two are overall predicters of score the third is a predictor of the spead. They are related but not mutually exclusive. And as you mentioned, there is a certain strategy to it.
Well
The answers to 1 and 2 logically imply the answer to 3, so yes it is redundant.
Of course you could throw logic out the window and your answer to 3 could be different then abs(1 – 2), but then you wouldn’t be logical. You’d be a sooner.

No you're right
Two reasons for Question 3:
(1) Part of it is just a scoring thing. I kinda worked through what I thought it might take to push a 0 score and needed a few points somewhere, and…
(2) I think your team scores/margin of victory prediction is the most important prediction compared with some of the noise below. So it seemed a fair way to add a few points (and get me to 10 questions).
Overall, though, you’re right: it’s redundant. On a less busy day, I might’ve come up with a more elegant solution.
--PB--
Strategy element
I didn’t consider that, but it’s interesting. I’m all for it, if people wanna get funky. Low score wins. Period.
--PB--
Few have hedged.
I didn’t quite realize the option on #3 to use as a hedge.

Usually by my progression through OU week I already have a clear score and some very real sense of the game…and whatever attendant anxiety that is special only for super football events and the occasional basketball or baseball game.
So, two things have happened. I had no score in my head. There was also this eerie sense of silence and calm all day long. No anxiety. Spooky. Tonight I remembered something I had written not too long ago. I didn’t post it because it wasn’t relevant to anything. I realized there was my score, at least half of it. Texas has only scored 29 points 10 times. But they have won 9 of those.
Didn’t mean to wait you out for devious means, horndude. It was a crooked path of its ownself.

Being in Hawaii for the week, I’ll be in front of the TV at 6 AM here. And I’m feeling confident. Irrationally, marvelously, deliriously confident.
I remember starting a road trip the day after 41-38. And telling God that I was fulfilled when it came to sports, that I was gifted with the greatest game and the greatest outcome I could have hoped for. I thought that euphoria would last forever, and although my gratitude will, the bliss did not.
I’m ready for another life-altering victory. It could be tomorrow.
