ESPN The Magazine: PB vs The World
Okay, not quite, but I did pony up to argue opposite my buddy Stephen from ATVS that the Big 12--not SEC--is this year's best football conference. Yeah, yeah, I know: I've been railing against conference chest thumping wars for years, but cut me some slack... they were gonna do this piece with or without me, and I damn sure think highly enough of America's most exciting football conference this year to take a few good natured swings.

Thanks
Just wanted to drop by and say it was a blast to spar with you, though I do agree with you that the whole conference pride argument is a bit forced. I’d rather not be in a position in which I say nice things about Alabama.
Don't give an inch!!!!
I’m sick and tired of hearing this “any given Saturday” crap from SEC partisans. To me, that doesn’t mean your conference has depth, it means your top teams aren’t really all that good, b/c they’re finding ways to lose to your middle-of-the-pack teams.
As far as the supposed defensive superiority of the SEC, when are teams in the SEC going to start playing offense? Why is it that defensive coordinators can dominate in the SEC and then get their clocks cleaned when they come coach in the Big 12, where they have to face diverse offenses (Carl Torbush, Gene Chizik, I’m looking at you).
SEC fans always claim they have great defenses, but they never look at the opposite corollary; maybe the offenses in that conference really aren’t that good. The ’08 Cotton Bowl certainly backs that argument up.
I don't care for conference pride
In particular, I’m rooting for Aggy to lose every game they play from here to eternity, no matter how bad it makes the Big 12 look. Also, when I think of conference pride I can’t help but think of mouth-breathing troglodytes with double-digit IQs chanting “S-E-C”. Let us not be retarded SEC fans. Those guys are stuuuu-pid.
That disclaimer aside, I think you clearly won the argument. As Beergut noted, the SEC’s “depth” is really an illusion fostered by the lack of quality at the top. Florida lost because they’re flawed, and teams are starting to figure out Meyer’s offense a bit. Tennessee, Auburn, and Mississippi St. flat-out blow, Arkansas might be the worst BCS conference school in the country, South Carolina is thoroughly mediocre, and the best thing Kentucky has done is to not get blown out by Bama.
I must admit ......
Who ever said the Big 12 is top of the pops this year, not so fast my Big 12 friends. I must agree mindless drunken stumble bums chanting SEC, SEC, SEC gets old quick and 2 years in a row. If a Big 12 team would step up and grab hold to the brass ring shouting SEC over and over will lose its luster. Both Texas and OU are on deck for a National Championship, who wants it more? We will Know Saturday at midnight. I hope Texas wins 55-0 . I would prefer to relax Saturday and a blow out by Texas will allow me to be rested for the Gators. I hope LSU wins 55-0 too. I would prefer not to be a nervous wreck at this games outcome ether .
