Definition of Style?

I keep hearing references to style points and commentators saying that point spreads are important in the polls. In Saturdays game I think leaving in the starting defense would have most likely prevented Baylor's last touchdown and some slightly different play calling or leaving in the starting offense would have likely resulted in Texas scoring at least 52 points. I understand the risks of injury when players are tired and that Texas and Mack Brown are always considered a class act when it comes to sportsmanship. But with ou and Florida poised for strong finishes and our remaining games being relatively weak, is this a time when running a score up would not be considered unsportsmanlike?

Absolutely Agree

We should run up the score as high as possible until they change the BCS BS System. However, Florida pulled back on the reigns against Vandy. Texas Tech, not so much. Bama and Cal didn’t have the chance.

Actually, at the Baylor game

I was disappointed that Mack didn’t pull Colt at the end of the 3rd quarter. The game was very well in hand. All the style points in the world won’t matter if Colt gets hurt.

We have nothing left to prove

We have run one of the toughest gauntlets in recent NCAA memory. Blowing out teams is best left to the Leach’s of the world.

Colt was left in the game to pad his Heisman hopes.

With the attrition that has occurred, getting in back-ups is important.

Bombilla is correct. The Horns needed what they needed and nothing more.

With two more tough games – not that they are necessarily up to the four powerhouses, but a travel game and the ags coming to town, that is sufficient – it is imperative the Horns remain as strong as they can. When running up the score is a function of the general health of the team, your wisest decision is to opt for the health. Plus, the Horns could get some film on younger players to push the coaching edge in case those guys have to play. I’m sure Wells’ mistake will get a lot of attention.

Colt may have stayed in a little longer than necessary, but being close to the 300-yard passing mark was probably a consideration. It would have probably been with the RBs if one was close to 100 or 200 yards. I’m sure they understand that such padding is also a gamble.

Baylor really didn’t let up but they had no reason, too. They were about scoring and didn’t care if Texas ran it up even more. Briles can now say he got 21 and can tell recruits they could add to that total: Baylor wanted the leverage for their future and would have given up 70 to get 35. Briles is a wily character and completely hardcore.

Saturday forecast for Kansas looks clear and mostly sunny, but it will be cold, relative to here. Those lingering injuries won’t loosen up and stay loose near as well if it is colder. Long range forecast: 46 degrees, wind chill around 37, possibly breezy (North wind 15, gusts to 25), even a 20% chance of showers. Football weather for sure, but not the best for passing games.

Mack Brwon on "style points" during Monday's presser,
“That’s a question we’re asked a lot, and I don’t worry about style points. I worry about winning and doing the best you can. You would hope that people would put the best football team at that time in the right places, and that’s what we’re working toward. If you’re working on style points, number one, it’s an insult to the team you’re playing because it insinuates you can. You better be ready to go, because the last time we went to Kansas, there weren’t any style points. There was 11 seconds left when we scored to win the game. What we need to do is win.”

Don’t even talk about style points and UT in the same sentence because it is about winning the game first and accolades, if any, afterward.

We are who they (ie. human clone voters) think we are. The good news is we saw some movement this week after Penn State dropped out. The further good news is there is more BCS chaos coming (we hope, we hope, we hope).

Here’s to a good ol’ boy beatdown on Saturday. Let’s get focused and fired up about our next opportunity to win!

Agree or disagree

with Mack, he has a philosophy. And it clearly isn’t Jugular John (as we used to say about John Jenkins and his UH run-and-shoot bunch piling up scores like 95-21). Coach Brown believes in allowing the opponent a chance at some respect; when UT’s subs hit the field, the passing game goes virtually in mothballs and the defensive exotics are shelved.

Didn’t say I agree with this; I see Mack’s point, I also see the benefit of OU’s 60-point games and how that may trump Texas’ 45-21 and 38-14 wins over Baylor and Colorado — teams the Horns clearly could have dumped more points on.

cody johnson doesn’t hold while blocking and we’d have 52pts on like a 30 yd john chiles TD run..

style points are dominating a team, not necessarily scoring 70-3, but completely shutting down their offense, moving the ball at will, and not having drives stifled.

we did not do that against baylor. baylor should not be throwing on our secondary as easily as they did in the first half, they should not have tied the game 14-14.

I don't think BU threw that good against our secondary

The only play that was bad was when Earl Thomas was hurt and Ben Wells got beat deep. The run defense should be better, but Orakpo and Houston are out.

Baylor threw

for less than 80 yards or something ridiculous in that game. The secondary was not the problem. I’m surprised that nobody else seemed to think that Baylor would score some points against us. In checking the post game write-ups and watching the Bears a time or two prior to their clash with our beloved Longhorns, I felt that they would put up some points. Griffin is a talented young QB. He will be very Pat White-ish over the next couple of years.

Anyway, I was disappointed that our offense did not take it to the Baylor D on every single possession. Dominating an opponent for style points helps but, when voters across the country can’t watch the game, a very lopsided scoreboard in the end could mean even more. Respectfully distance yourself as much as possible. Apologize to the coach during the post game hand-shake, and walk away giving him a wink with a big ’ol dollar sign twinkle in your eye so he is aware his program will benefit from you taking those massive BCS payouts once the human voters give you those much deserved “style points.”

Payback

When you beat down a team that has already lost the game, you give them motivation for revenge. But the team that is down needs to raise the white flag by being the first to pull their starters.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
