What's ultimately better for a BCS bowl next week?
I think OU is better then Tech at home but I wonder, assuming OU would jump Texas with a win against Tech, if Texas would have a better BCS bowl opportunity if Tech wins out - Fiesta?
One the one hand I can root for OU and hope for a three way tie Bid 12 South and a bid to the Conference championship-seems unlikely, or root for Texas Tech to win out and then go to Phoenix.
God forbid were 11-1 and stuck in the Cotton Bowl while an ACC team gets a a BCS bid.

This is what Im thinking
Texas Wins Out
OU wins out causing 3 way tie in south and Texas fate in BCS hands
>Tech likely falls below OU, maybe Texas(voters are fickle)
>If OU jumps Texas, advancing to CCG, Texas likely misses BCS bid
>If Texas stays ahead of OU, Texas advances to CCG
>If Tex beats Mizzou, advances to NCG
>Texas loses to Mizzou, goes to Cotton Bowl
OU beats Tech then loses to OSU, Tech wins the south
>Tech wins CCG, advance to NCG, Texas goes to Fiesta Bowl in their place
>Tech loses CCG, Missouri goes to Fiesta Bowl & BCS chaos
Tech wins out, advances to CCG
>Tech beats Mizzou for CCG, advances to NCG, Texas likely goes to Fiesta
>Tech loses to Mizzou, Mizzou advances to Fiesta Bowl, Texas misses BCS bid
Texas (gulp) loses to aggie
>Texas BCS hopes are out the window
>OU could clinch south with win over Texas Tech…Texas out of discussion
Tech beats OU, clinches south, loses to Baylor:
>Tech goes to CCG but eliminated from NCG, USC now in NCG discussion.
>With Tech winning B12 Fiesta bowl is theirs, Texas misses a BCS bid
Tech loses to OU and Baylor
>Texas wins South via tiebreaker with OU
>Texas plays for CCG, maybe NCG
so basically what you're saying is...
…help us, Baylor Wan-Kenobi, you’re our only hope. :(

Only note...
if Texas loses to A&M, OU doesn’t clinch South with victory over Tech. We’d win South with a victory over Baylor and an OU loss to OSU.

i dont understand, if we lose to A&M.. we have 2 losses. if OU beats Tech then Tech has 1 loss. If OU loses to OSU then OU has 2 losses.
TX – 2 loss
TT – 1 loss
OU – 2 loss
how do you figure we’d go to the BigXII champ game?

Disagree...
1. OU beats Tech then loses to OSU, Tech wins the south
>Tech wins CCG, advance to NCG, Texas goes to Fiesta Bowl in their place
>Tech loses CCG, Missouri goes to Fiesta Bowl & BCS chaos
- Tech more than likely falls behind Texas in the final BCS standings, thereby Texas receives a BCS bid and Tech goes to the Cotton Bowl
2. Tech wins out, advances to CCG
>Tech beats Mizzou for CCG, advances to NCG, Texas likely goes to Fiesta
>Tech loses to Mizzou, Mizzou advances to Fiesta Bowl, Texas misses BCS bid
- Just like #1 Tech likely falls behind in the final BCS standings
3. Tech beats OU, clinches south, loses to Baylor:
>Tech goes to CCG but eliminated from NCG, USC now in NCG discussion.
>With Tech winning B12 Fiesta bowl is theirs, Texas misses a BCS bid
- As long as Texas wins out and remains in the Top 4 in the final BCS standings, Texas will receive a BCS bid as long as both Tech and OU are not ahead of Texas, not likely if Tech beats OU
4. Tech loses to OU and Baylor
>Texas wins South via tiebreaker with OU
>Texas plays for CCG, maybe NCG
- Under this scenario Texas WILL go to Miami no questions asked as long as they win in KC

Are BCS bowls really that much better?
Much time and “ink” has been expended trying to calculate not just how we might make the NC game, but failing that, how we could at least make a BCS game, and what an injustice it will be if we don’t. The more I think about it, the less that seems to matter. Aside from money for the school, if we can’t play for the NC, I don’t much care whether we play in the Cotton (or Holliday Bowl) or the Fiesta Bowl, Orange, or Sugar Bowl. Now I’m not saying the Alamo, of Houston, or Poulan Weed-eater Bowls are OK. However, in terms of final standings, we would do better defeating a #10 or 12 -ranked team in the Cotton Bowl than losing to a #3 or 4 -ranked team in the Fiesta Bowl. (Of course, beating a #3 or 4 would be even better…) I’m just saying our season does not hinge on getting into a BCS Bowl, which are a big deal mainly because the BCS and TV tell us they are.

Yes, the BCS bowls are way better.
Unless you want to play a 9 am game in Dallas against LSU on Fox. Or, play the Oregon Ducks on ESPN2 on some random Wednesday night.
I want to play the best opponent possible on the largest stage.
The silliness of the polls
never ceases to amaze me.
You’re spot-on, OBdoc, when you say beating a No. 10 (like Washington in the 2001 Holiday Bowl) is better in the final poll than losing to No. 3 in the Sugar Bowl. . .
But BCS games have a pedigree to them that the Holiday/Cotton do not. A big issue is the time slot and TV audience; in Texas’ case that may not matter for in-state recruiting - but it does help in the out-of-state picture and it does help the program in terms of donations and being an elite spot for up-and-coming assistant coaches to aspire to. All these are plusses; bad part of this season is the Fiesta is the likely destination, and the opponent figures to come from the Utah/Boise/Big East champ leftover.
Springboard for next season
History shows, win big in BCS bowl, return a lot of starters, and you are in great postiion next season
USC wins rosebowl, make it to NCG next year
Texas wins rosebowl, Makes it to NCG next year
Ohio St wins Fiesta bowl, makes it to NCG next year
LSU wins Sugar bowl, makes it to NCG next year
Georgia wins Sugar bowl, preseason number one
If you want momentum and put yourslef in good postion for a run, BCS bowls/wins go a long way
a program should always strive to prove how great they are. of course beating a team in a 2nd tier bowl is better than getting blown out in a BCS bowl…
but we should be striving to win those BCS bowls and proving we’re the best. we shouldn’t be settling for 2nd rate teams, we should play the best and beat them.
I think in the end, our best choice is for Tech to pummel OU, OU to fall in the rankings, have TT go to the Big12 championship, go on the NC game, and have Texas, for sure (almost), go to a BCS bowl.
that scenario plays out much better than the “by the skin of our teeth” method of having OU beat Tech, beat OSU, and still somehow by the grace of God be ranked lower than Texas…
I think if OU beats Tech and OSU… there is no way they will be ranked behind Texas. And if this situation plays out, there’s no guarantee that TT would be ranked behind Texas.

Tech
If Tech loses one of their last 2 or 3 if they make it to KC, they probably fall below Texas in the BCS even if they win the Big 12.

I'd rather just have tech lose to ou and baylor.
I think this is the only scenario I would actually be able to stand watching. I hate polls, so lets just hope that it doesn’t come down to that. It’s bad enough this gay system choose the two NCG teams, but it is even gayer if it is up to that same system to choose teams for conference championships.
One caveat...
this is all assuming that whoever is higher in bcs polls gets a bcs bid. this is not true, the bowls will take whichever school they think would bring in the most money. in just about every case, this would be texas. we have fans everywhere and we travel well. i would think that if texas beats a&m next week, it’s a pretty good bet we can get a bcs bid.
Auto BCS bid
Teams that finish in the top 4 of the final BCS standings receive an automatic BCS bid as long as there are not more than 2 from the same conference in the top 4.

Rembering When
Some of us are old enough to remember when the Cotton Bowl was a major bowl, on par with the Rose, Orange, and Sugar Bowls. I can’t recall the political maneuvering involved but when the BCS sprang up, suddenly there was the Fiesta Bowl involved (I guess with more money in their pocket) , and the Cotton Bowl suddenly became a “second-tier” bowl.
"Only angry people win football games." --DKR
The Cotton has lobbied for inclusion...
And moving the game to Jerry World is part of that master plan. Yes, the Cotton Bowl will be played this year for the last time at the Cotton Bowl.
It would be great for Texas to have a BCS game so close to home (a la Florida with the Orange, LSU with the Sugar, and USC with the Rose), but with the creation of the “MNC” I don’t see the inclusion of another bowl.
Every top team like Texas who was ranked #1 or 2 if they lose a game they go down 4-5 spots in the polls how come so many people have a hard time comprehending that if we win out we are ahead of texas tech it doesnt matter that they beat us we played them on there field and lost I don’t see us not getting into a BCS bowl. it will happen, which one I have no clue NCG or FIesta who knows
The best hypothetically..
It’s all hypothetical, so why not go for broke?
Texas wins out.
ALA loses to Auburn AND FLA.
FLA loses to FSU, beats ALA.
Oklahoma beats TT and loses to OSU.
If TT loses to OU and beats Baylor,
— then it could be Texas and TT in the NCG.
If TT loses to OU and stumbles against Baylor,
— then it seems like Texas would be number 1 and playing somebody (USC?) in the NCG.
Sure it’s crazy and unlikely, but often crazy and unlikely things happen in college football. If you’re gonna wish for a pony, might as well wish for the best one.
