Recruiting Spotlight - 2010
Bumped. A nice overview. --PB--
2009's class will hopefully compete with 2007's as one of the top classes in school history. However, its not too early to start to think about what could be in 2010. Here's a run down of some of the state's top talent, and its pretty impressive.
RBs
1. Lache Seastruck, RB Temple -- top RB in the state, but has had some unproductive games and discipline problems this year. Highly recruited by USC
2. Marcus Murphy RB DeSoto -- He's been under the radar but had an amazing game against Seastruck's Temple team.
3. DJ Jones RB Denison - Is said to be favoring the Longhorns early on. Denison is undefeated and in the playoffs. Jones had a big game last week including 3 scores. Averaged over 12 yards a carry and was explosive in special teams. Jones attended the Baylor game.
QBs
1. Scotty Young QB Denton Ryan -- Young is pro-style passer with good size and a good arm. He'll be highly recruited elsewhere though, and Gilbert may scare him away.
2. Matt Brown QB Allen - He's more versatile than Young, and has accumulated over 2,000 yards passing, and 1,000 yards rushing.
3. Connor Wood QB Houston Second Baptist - Wood has been compiling some sick numbers and has all the tools and size (6-4). He's a drop back passer in the mold of Gilbert.
OL
1. Dominic Espinosa OL Cedar Park - The junior class really doesn't have any standout linemen like the senior class, but he's a good one.
WRs
1. Darius Terrell WR DeSoto - Terrell is on a good team w/ Marcus Murphy and has size and speed similar to DJ Grant and Malcolm Williams.
2. Darius White WR Dunbar - Another good size/speed guy 6-2 4.45
LBs
1. Corey Nelson LB Dallas Skyline - Highly touted LB from a high school we've had some success from in past (Christian Scott) and is long on the Horns. One of the top recruits in ths state. There aren't that many top LBs in the state though and the Horn's may need to try to go out of state for one if they don't land Nelson.
DBs
1. Adrian White CB DeSoto - Another DeSoto guy who you would love to have. Good size (5-11) and speed.
DL
1. Jackson Jeffcoat DE Plano West - Probably the top recruit in the state. 6-4, 220 or 230 and 4.5ish speed. He's being recruited heavily.
2. Reggie Wilson DE Haltom City - Not a bad consolation if they don't land Jeffcoat. Similar size as Jeffcoat, though probably not as fast.
3. Daniel Noble DT Marcus -- Noble is one of the top recruits in the state and has good size 6-4, 280 and decent speed (sub 5) for a tackle.
Texas is supposedly high on the list for a lot of these guys and I expect that a strong finish once again by the Horns will lead to a big recruiting haul in February and March when these guys are invited to camp.

Jordan Hicks
Top LB prospect from Ohio has Texas as his early favorite. FWIW.
In Mack Brown We Trust!

another from Colorado
QB Austin Hinder from Steamboat Springs is very well regarded. He has us high on his list and rumor says we’ve already offered.

Hinder and Hicks
yeah, both have Texas among the schools they are considering but I haven’t heard that we’ve offered either of them yet.
With Penn State and Ohio State in Hick’s backyard, its hard to see a LB leaving that part of the country to come to Texas. We’re just not highly regarded for our LBs.

Traylon Shead
What do you think about this kid? He’s the RB from Cayuga, I believe. He’s put up huge numbers, but plays in a pretty small classification (2A maybe).

Don't know much about Shead
He’s got similar size to some of the top backs listed, but his speed is a touch slower according to some of the services and I think its pretty apparent just by looking at his highlights here:

The RBs on the top of the list are on teams that are in the 4A and 5A playoffs, and have proven themselves against better talent. I would be surprised if a guy like Shead ended up somewhere other than TCU or A&M.

Jones didn’t come alone!
He also had several teammates with him!

Lamik Mckinnon "The Rio Grande Express"
I live in Round Rock now, but I went to Del Rio High from 92-95, and I still follow their football team. Not many of us around here pay any attention to those border schools.
Maybe Major should make a drive to Del RIo?
P.S. 700 yards rushing in the first 3 games.

South Texas
There are some pretty impressive numbers being put up by RBs in south Texas. The funny thing is that two of them are freshman – Trent Jackson (Cuero) and Dennis Smith from (Wimberley). Both are over 1,000 yards for the season and have good size and speed.
McKinnon is a transplant from New York and there had been some question as to his eligibility. He was ruled ineligible last month, but apparently played 2 weeks ago.

Steamboat Springs
Austin Hinder isn’t that great of a QB.

Curious
I’m not a huge follower of recruiting in general, UT recruting specifically. But outside of Texas, what state(s) does Brown and his staff consistently pull players from?
by Tech92 on Nov 18, 2008 2:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
UT recruits 95% in state.
I don’t think there’s any state we specifically target. You could say Colorado, but I’m sure the Houston’s affected each others decision, and Nolan was undoubtedly affected by Tim’s previous dealings with Mack.
2009 – 1/18 OOS – Arkansas (Derek Johnson)
2008 – 1/20 OOS – Colorado (Nolan Brewster)
2007 – 1/24 OOS – California (Blaine Irby)
2006 – 2/25 OOS – South Carolina, Colorado (Ben Alexander, Lamarr Houston)
2005 – 2/15 OOS – New Mexico, Colorado (Aaron Lewis, Michael Houston)
2004 – 0/20
2003 – 0/28
2002 – 5/28 OOS – Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arizona, Colorado (Marquis Johnson, Bryan Pickryl, Chase Pittman, Lyle Sendlein, Kasey Studdard)

heavily invested in Texas
Mack has built an extensive network of relationships with HS coaches throughout Texas. There’s plenty of talent in the state to go around.
They typically test the waters with the top out of state recruits to see if their is an interest or a connection with the state and the university before they commit resources to an out-of-state recruit. There really isn’t a geographic focus outside of Texas.

Makes sense
Shoot, half the kids in the state grow up wanting to be a Longhorn so he has the luxury of being picky. What a great position to be in. Just wasn’t sure if there was a number two on their list. Florida or California specifically. You guys take very few if any JUCO kids too, right?
by Tech92 on Nov 18, 2008 4:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't recall mack having ever brought in a juco guy
the 2002 class was really the turning point to all this. Only Sedlein and Studdard panned out and they felt like if they had had more history with recruiting Johnson, Pickryl, and Pittman they may have made a different choice and gone elsewhere.
That has only cemented itself over the last couple of years with the Perriloux debacle and John Brantley deciding to stay in Florida late in the game.

Chase Pittman's older brother Cole(a Longhorn at the time) died....
That was the reason he transferred to LSU to be back home in Louisiana and close to his family, classy move by Mack to let him transfer there…

Alfio Randall, OL was a Juco guy
We also signed a DT in the early part of the decade, but he didn’t end up getting in. Can’t remember his name though.

Benson
Cedric Benson’s little brother is also supposed to be one of the top rated LB’s in the 2010 class.
