What if Sam McGuffie came to UT?
MGoBlog is reporting that freshman running back Sam McGuffie is probably leaving Michigan after their disastrous season.
This Michigan Daily article about him says that among other things, he's homesick for Texas (I assume that means the state, not our university). He may not play this week due to a death in the family, which is bringing him back to Texas. He went to school at Cy-Fair in Houston. According to the article he picked UM over Notre Dame, Southern Cal, A&M, and Florida.
"I miss Texas," McGuffie said. "When you’re born and raised in Texas, of course you’re going to miss Texas. I miss my family most of all. I miss my friends, my best friend. You know, it’s just like any other kid would miss their family and their friends and just being in their own bed, in their own warm bed, watching cartoons or whatever on Saturday mornings."
After the 2006 season, the Houston Chronicle named him Houston-area offensive MVP, just behind another talented Houston-area running back who got all-around MVP, a guy named Fozzy Whitaker.
He misses Texas, and I hope he doesn't want to be an Aggie after this year's team. Wonder if Mack would give him a call if he decides to transfer?

I dont remember him doing anything this year
Is he any good? (not being facetious, I just really have no idea about his play this year)

Here’s one of the many Youtube videos of him in High School. He was among the top 50 prospects in the country.

He finally picked Michigan
just over A&M. It will be curious to see if he will go to A&M or a different school considering A&Ms new “system”

Two points about McGuffie
1. Texas did not recruit him in the first place (or if they did, he wasn’t interested).
2. Texas is not in the transfer business. Can you remember the last one Mack Brown took? (Other than a kicker, Greg Johnson)

Ryan Nunez
that’s the last transfer I remember taking before Greg Johnson.

Do y'all remember Xavier Lee?
the thug from Free Shoes University?….yeah, we originally recruited him and he was interested in transferring to TX the year we won the national championship b/c he had got into it wth a coach, and the TX coaches just laughed off the idea of him transferrin…

We should totally go after him.
We dont hardly have any young running backs, red shirted freshman running backs, or incoming signee running backs.

If he transfers, he probably will go Aggy
He was a strong A&M lean in HS, and I think his dad played for Aggy back in the day. Anyway, he’s more of a fullback type player. (all that backflip crap doesn’t work against college players).

McGuffie is extremely undersized, and had Lloyd Carr still been the coach at Michigan he would never have recruited him for his power running game. He can’t develop into a fullback either, he doesn’t have the size or strength to be a reliable pass or lead blocker. He’s outmatched in every area by the existing set of Texas running backs (athleticism, strength, speed), and if there aren’t any great redshirts or offers I’m sure Mack Brown will get them soon enough. I think he’s even too small/slow to be a slot receiver akin to Wes Welker/Ryan Nunez. I’m from the Houston area and followed McGuffie’s high school career, but new all along that he wouldn’t succeed at the next level.

Depends on how you define success
In the two games I’ve seen him (ND and ILL.) he looks like he could be a quality backup for just about anybody, or a solid starter for a mid range BCS team (ND could use him), especially one that platooned regularly. Just contributing at that level is a raging success for most high school players.

actually,
he committed to Michigan long before Carr was axed. Supposedly, he was to be a KR and WR or possibly a hybrid. I think it speaks to Michigan’s failings this season that he could get meaningful field time at RB as a true freshman.
