UT vs. Tulane Quick Game Thoughts
The Good
1. The defense was impressive. Tulane shot 32%, Horns had 46 rebounds, 16 steals. Barnes called off the press about 5 minutes into the 2nd half. Horns were up at that time 63-27.
2. Damion James, Oh Jeez, Oh Man. Shooting from the hip - We're probably looking at the Big XII player of the year. 16 points (3 highlight dunks) 8 rebounds, and my favorite 3 steals.
3. Athletically, Justin Mason is on par with anyone in the country. The guy is a freak. He may not wow you on a stat sheet, but you always know when he is on the court and when he isn't. Who else can you say that about?
4. Dexter Pittman, Player of the game. 10 points, 6 rebounds in 15 minutes. He owned the paint.
5. 27 minutes of very good basketball
The OK
1. Dogus Balbay - First game, no jitters, quick footed, long arms, really good handle on the offense, defended pretty well. Criticism - 26 minutes, 2 points, 0 assist, 4 fouls. His first game is out of the way, now it's time to show us you can be something besides another guy on the floor. If you hear the way his name is pronounced, you'll understand why i think we should call him Summer's Eve.
2. AJ had a quiet 15. He made some nice shots but overall it was just ok. I personally don't think he has any business being a point guard. I think we will be ok with Mason and Balbay taking most of the minutes and AJ bringing the ball up every once in awhile. AJ's strength is is quick release. I can't think of any PGs known more for their quick release than their court vision or ball handling skills.
3. Everyone got playing time except Varez Ward, who was out with an injury.
The Ugly
1. The final 5 minutes of basketball was nauseating. Turnovers, poor defense, no offense. I said in the game thread, some line drills were being earned with that final 5 minutes. Absolutely brutal.
2. From an educated guess I would say attendance was 5,000. Must be some big tests tomorrow.
3. Harrison Smith and Matt Hill, That's all I'm going to say about that.

should mention Atchley
A pretty ho-hum game by his standards, but still had 12 points on 4-6 shooting (and 4-4 from the line!) and added four blocks in 25 minutes. Solid.

Conner looked a little tentative
Understandable after the knock he received on his chin

Good stuff
That uptempo basketball is so much more fun to watch. It’s probably better suited to the horns as well. It seemed like everyone on the team had multiple highlight dunks and steals. Should we get some sort of make lots of noise initiative going in the drum? It’s dead freakin silent except for the ’zone.

Attendance
The 24th ranked Jayhawks drew 16,000 tonight. The 7th ranked Horns drew 5 or 6,000.

"our football team is better than yours"
Cute, but doesn’t apply here.
As an FYI
KU Enrollment
UT Enrollment

Hi, we are a football school.
Surprised you didn’t know that before now. Attendance will go up once the football season goes away. Sad? Maybe, but its how it is. It has no bearing on what we are ranked. Barnes has increased attendance since hes been here, but you aren’t going to drub up interest against a shitty Tulane team when the football team is in the middle of one of the most exciting divisional races in history.

What day does the football team play on?
Who do they play this week?

I hear you, but it doesn't matter.
These early season games are basically preseason, and thanks to the greatest post season in all of sports, regular season basketball games mean next to nothing on an individual basis.
I guarantee you people watching the game at home were talking as much football as they were basketball during halftime. When bball is the only sport in town, attendance picks up. Its insane to compare us to Kansas for basketball fans, irregardless of school size.
If a bball game was on a football gameday, THEN you would see truly terrible attendance. They are too smart to ever let that happen though.

What happened to Ward?
and even though this game didn’t get a great crowd, I’m expecting the new rewards program they have for student ticket holders to produce at least some improvements on attendance.
Also, does anyone know the attendance for the 1st game? I was as the opener last season and there couldn’t have been more 1 or 2,000.

Big 12 Player of the Year
is, unfortunately, most likely going to a Sooner.

OU is a football school too
I got to watch most of the OU/Davidson game (in Norman), and there is no doubt that the atmosphere there was MUCH better than the library atmosphere in Austin. Us being a football school is no excuse for that pathetic turn out for that game.
I thought Blake Griffin had a rather quiet game but then exploded in the 2nd half and ended up with 20+ points and 20+ rebounds.

Davidson is a better draw than Tulane after last years tourney.
By a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong shot.
Hell if you just had Stephan Curry playing DamJam in one on one it would be a more compelling matchup than UT vs Tulane.

Balbay
I don’t care much about the lack of scoring. He was fantastic on defense, putting his man under constant pressure and showing a quickness we have not seen since TJ. On offense, he was confident in running the team and communicated well with the other players. I saw several good entry passes that put the ball right where it needed to be. All in all, a terrific debut.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

scoring aside
I think most people would like to have their point guard have at least one assist in 26 minutes of work.

I believe at LEAST...
..one assist would’ve been given had Connor knocked down the three

Blake Griffin overrated?
Did anyone watch the OU Davidson game? Little scrawny Stephen Curry was making 3 pointers over griffin. Griffin was defending curry most of the night. And curry still made 42 points

Point being, if stephen curry can outplay Griffin, so can we, on offense at least
