My letter to Mr.Wilbon
Dear Mr. Wilbon
Your comments about the University of Texas deciding on their new coach to succeed Mack Brown were offensive and inappropriate. Will Muschamp has done a phenomenal job as the defensive coordinator and has earned his right to become the next head football coach at the University of Texas. I think that based upon the prior conduct of the University of Texas, they would have hired Will Muschamp even if he was black. If the University of Texas was racist in their hiring they wouldn’t have 6 assistant coaches on their football staff that are black!!. If the University of Texas was racist they would not have dismissed Buck Brunette for his racist comment on his facebook about Barrack Obama being the next President of the United States. And oh by the way, if the University of Texas were racist they would not have given Barrack Obama a tour of the facility during the democratic debate and done it with such enthusiasm, honesty and pride.
Accusing the University of Texas of racism is no small matter and you should be accountable for saying such false statements. The University of Texas has a recent history of nonracist actions. In closing, as a professional I hope you do your research next time before you insult all who support or associate with the University of Texas. .
Sincerely, David Kennedy

In the far past, The University has had problems with racism, but I think The University has done an incredibly job address racial issue in recent years. With that said, I agree with David, for the most part. Wilbon is an idiot!

Does anyone have a link to a transcript or video? So far I’ve only seen a reference to it, and even then, it has only been here on BON. I would like to get down to brass tacks on it, so a link would be very much appreciated.

I’d like to hear the Wilbon comments too. I wonder if the Tirico & Van Pelt podcast from yesterday would have it…
While it’s true that the University’s diversity hiring practices, with respect to academics, have been questioned before (see Prof. Loftus Carson’s lawsuits against the school), Wilbon’s allegations would seem to be baseless. Again, though, I’d like to hear them.

I don’t see a direct quote, do you? Granted, I didn’t completely read all the comments, but i wasn’t in the original post, and I didn’t spot it while skimming through comments.

Haha I figured it would be from Jason Whitlock. Either way it’s hard to call UT out on this when they just recently won a title with a black qb, not to mention they went out of their way to coddle him and make sure he wasn’t being criticized by the coaching staff for his inability to read a defense. Either way Mack Brown nor UT is racist and VY is still the truth.

sour grapes/ much worse!!
if true, (I did not hear the conversation) the notion that Wilbon accusing Texas of rasism
is much more serious than sour grapes. it is a pattern of sports personalities playing the race card recklessly and without merit. He should review the entire Texas sports
program and realize we have gotten past rasism at UT and he owes a retraction and
apology to the University on his show. Shame on you, Wilbon. Ty Willingham was not fired because he is black. he was fired because he LOST and LOSERS get fired in the
strange world of college football. Is his memory so short that we have had recently two
African-American quarterbacks who did quite well, thank you, James Brown and VY?
Accusations of racism are no longer going to go unchallenged be fans like me, who will
support any player or coach regardless of color. Didn’t we just elect an African-American
President? Wilbon has deminished his place with me and other and will never recover.
It is just time to move on and ignore persons like Wilbon.

sorry...
..but the it’s raCism…bugged me
I think you’re right, though. Why do we care about ESPN and their writers/commentators. They are obviously trying to get a rise out of its audience. They no longer care/want to research their work and think before they talk.

The fact that a black president was elected has no bearing on whether or not racism is still prevalent in society or even in hiring practices. And I wouldn’t go pointing at black athletes an attempt to refute racism, just FYI. I’m not trying to be the PC police or anything, but rather illustrating the logical fallacies.
Anyway, IF Wilbon said this, of which I’ve yet to see anything other than second-hand evidence here on BON, it was a stupid and careless misuse of the race card, and the guy should kiss Mack Brown’s lily white arse.
