Texas - Texas Tech Postgame Thoughts Forthcoming

I've got quite a bit to say tonight, but it'll take a few to get it all spelled out.  In the meantime, this thread is the beer to shed your tears in.

Congratulations to Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, the Tech D-Line, Mike Leach, and Texas Tech. They delivered a football game their fans will never, ever forget. Tonight, they celebrate--worthy South Division leaders.

A ten gallon hat tip to them tonight. They deserve every bit of glory they're enjoying right now.

More on the view from our side soon.

Tech played great

And this loss sucks but we are not out of the chase for the National Title. Its back to hoping teams lose ahead of us. Season is not over! And i am still proud as ever to be a longhorn fan!

I'm dead inside

I swear that last pass defied the laws of physics. I haven’t looked at the numbers yet, but that was definitely a hell of a show. We had the game won at 1:40, a dropped interception FTL.

I’ll say what I said at the beginning of the season, “We beat OU, everything else is icing on the cake.”

Well lads, the icing ended. We had a hell of a run. Let the cards fall as they may.

I need some encouragement.

Not really about our season, i still have the top prize as the goal.

That was a tough, tough loss. All the more so because we were getting bat so badly for 3+ quarters, then came back like Colt has gotten us accustomed to happening. Then we take the lead, need a stop (they hadnt scored an offensive td all half), and then leave with a w and a harrowing scare.

Instead, we are scared with a good kickoff return, watch them march down the field, erupt in ecstasy when gideon looks like he intercepts it, but still have hope.

Then the worst. And we look for crabtree’s foot to go out of bounds. Then the kickoff and the wish for a miracle.

Then, the realization that we just lost a game that it feels like we should have won, while at the same time we had no business being in after being down 19-0.

And after having won 3 incredible games in a row and only needing this one more victory to do what many of us thought was impossible. This hurts worse than KSU+A&M from ’06. At least at this point.

It was absolutely terrible coaching by Mack

Why would you try and score with a minute and a half left when you are only going to go up by one? You know Tech is only going to have to go fifty yards at the most, down the ball on third down. Don’t give them more than 30 seconds. DON’T SCORE WITH A MINUTE AND A HALF LEFT! Comically bad time management by Brown. I’ve been impressed with him all season but good god what makes you run the ball there and score with so much time left.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

ure crazy man

You dont take shit for granted there. Texas made every effort to not pass but to run. They milked substantial clock on that drive. Ure f’n nuts if you’re serious about that complaint

by Michael Bean on Nov 2, 2008 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

No

You can’t tell a player not to score… “Hey, take a knee on the 1! That way we’ll shut them down!” You give your defense the opportunity to stop them ( Which they did…. ::cough:: dropped interception ). Tough, tough, beat.

by notsofst on Nov 2, 2008 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think we should have taken no knee or anything

but I do think that Colt should have milked the clock to 2 or 3 sec. After all, we still would have had two downs, 2 timeouts, and a minute to score

We couldn't take the risk

of losing the momentum to just slow down. Part of the reason that last drive looked so good was because of the offense that set up shop quick.

by pianterreno on Nov 2, 2008 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

We were on the three yard line with

3 downs to try and score. I think the cost of a down is absolutely worth the 45 seconds less that Harrell and co. have to get into FG position. If you couldn’t get 3 yards in two downs you don’t deserve to win.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

if you can't keep a team from scoring with 1:29 to play

you don’t deserve to win either.

by zamm on Nov 2, 2008 12:51 AM CDT up reply actions

We new damn well

that we couldn’t stop them. That is why it was bad coaching, because somebody decided it was a good idea to lean on our defense when we hadn’t been able to slow down TT all. It is like going for two in overtime when you can just tie; it is a calculated risk, but you do what it takes to win. We just decided to score and then pray for some offensive miscue.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Nov 2, 2008 12:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the RZ failures against OSU

might have had something to do with it. I also don’t think Tech was terribly interested in stopping us once we got down there.

so much happened in this game. id give you 1000 dolalrs to go say that to macks face. ’WHY DIDNT YOU TAKE A KNEE ON THE THREE YARD LINE!"

Go say that to Muschamp too. Cus what it says really is that you have no faith in him and his defense.

by Michael Bean on Nov 2, 2008 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

If I did have faith in the defense

I would look stupid right now. It isn’t that I wasn’t on my knees praying for a stop, but the deck was stacked against us, and I don’t think it was the best game management. It would have seemed odd, but the way our offense was moving the ball on that drive, and the fact that TT must have been scared as hell at that point, I think that taking a knee just to chew clock would have been the right move.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

I'll say

I’m proud of the reactions I’ve seen from Texas fans so far tonight. Even with Texas not able to get in sync in this game, Texas Tech deserved it, and for all the appropriate scrutiny of what-could-have-been that we’ll go through, you have to give the Red Raiders credit for coming out and seizing this thing in the 1st Quarter. Anything less and this Texas team wins it.

As is, Tech had the ball last with a chance to win it, and Graham Harrell—who I don’t like much—delivered. He’s as much of a pirate punk as his coach, and yet… he was great tonight. Kid played great in the biggest game of his life. Kudos to him.

For Texas, we’ve got LOTS still in play, and in my post-game wrap I’ll walk through a lot of it. We’re very, very alive for the Big XII and, possibly, national title.

Tough loss for this team. For this YOUNG team. And, I hope, some lessons learned for our coaching staff. They deserve so much freaking credit for getting us to 8-0. Hopefully, they learned some important lessons from the game that takes us to 8-1.

I’m writing a long post on all this. It’s a devastating loss, but… there’s much to feel good about.

Even, I painfully say, after losing a game we shouldn’t have. We just… shouldn’t have. But Tech had what it took tonight. Damnit.

Still: the positives for the Looking Forward are good. Real good.

We’ll be okay. Especially if our coaches continue their trend of learning form mistakes.

colt didnt play terrible. still finished with 300+ yards, plenty of good throws. he was bit rattled at times, but he delivered like big time players do. he was pacing on the sidelines and could have rushed and forced things but he took what was there on that last drive and engineered an impressive Heisman worthy last drive. Tech doesnt pull off late heroics, Colts legacy is cemented in stone. He played ok for the circumstances. Not terrible

Shipley

By the way, how clutch is this guy? Yeah, he dropped the big one early, but he again came through with a special teams TD when our offense couldn’t get moving. He’s been right behind Colt as MVP of the O this year.

Yes

It makes me want to die when I think of every single moment when it could have been different… but our guys didn’t perform as if hungry enough/starving. I am not putting us down, but there were really times when we looked weak and not particularly motivated. That is the reason why we lost a game we should have won. I no longer live in Austin because, I swear, something about the culture breed underachievement.

May Colt be with you. Yeah, that's right.

by bfaut86 on Nov 2, 2008 1:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I hear you about not being able to sleep.

The biggest if I honestly think of, is just the play of the offense for the first 3 quarters. Even Mark May realized if Texas had come out played offense like we all know they can, that this game would not even of been close. I am not putting this on Gideon, or any individual player. As a whole the team came out flat and they just could not recover. But that’s what makes this game, so much fun. The best team does not always play the best and does not always win.

I'm really not upset with anybody

Nearly everyone who made mistakes: coaches and players alike; redeemed themselves at some point. Tech played a marvelous game and we didn’t. That’s that.

Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.

by zamm on Nov 2, 2008 12:55 AM CDT reply actions

Damn

This game kills. I moved to Austin from California in 1993, and I have watched nearly every Texas game since then. I have watched Texas lose close games, I have watched Texas get blown out, but I have never seen THAT. I never knew exactly how the Buckeye fans felt after 25-22, or the USC fans after 41-38. I definitely do now. Hell, the first K-state debacle in 06 didnt even hurt this bad.

I don’t want to believe what just happened. I absolutely hate Texas Tech; sorry, its just one of those things. Every year its been the same thing; someone inevitably says “You haven’t played this version of a Mike Leach offense yet,” which causes all of the Tech fans to gear up and get super-rowdy and nasty for the Texas matchup, and more often than not, Texas wins. Dude, Texas’ pass defense was outside of the top 100 two years ago and they still beat Tech and their high flying offense in Lubbock. Unfortunately, not this year. Mike Leach had a gameplan, a home stadium, not to mention a rowdy fanbase that believed, and he created a perfect storm finally dropped down and took a dump on everything Texas had. And even through all of that, TEXAS ALMOST WON.

I’m hurt, I’m crushed, I’m defeated, and I’m just the guy watching the damn game. I feel bad for Gideon, because while he was not the sole reason for losing the game, it would be hard pressed for him to make him believe otherwise right now.

But, look at the big picture. These guys are 8-1, after playing (not even debatable) THE TOUGHEST 4 game stretch of any team this year. Exhaustion was evident tonight, and I think if Texas had played Tech last Saturday and OK State tonight, Texas beats Tech and loses to OK State. Players were worn down, and a hostile crowd wanting to keep them down doesn’t help. Regardless, Texas is still an elite team, and while MNC hopes are obviously dimmer than they were 7 hours ago, they are still on pace to do amazing things this year and next. I’m pissed off at the outcome, but I am proud of these guys for not laying down and allowing themselves to be violated like most other teams would in a three-score hole (*cough*Georgia*cough) and turning the game into a knockdown, drag-out fight to the finish. BEAT BAYLOR!!!

BCS and Big 12 CG Not Intertwined

We don’t necessarily have to win the conference to sneak into the National Championship Game. Suppose TT gets to KC and loses to Mizzou…other things shake up, Bama losing once or twice…human voters don’t have a hard-on for USC and we could be in? Your thoughts.

i dont quite agree

MNC is out of reach for us if we don’t get to the big 12 title game

if mizzou wins, no big 12 team in in the MNC

in that case, by far the most likely scenario would be bama, florida, penn state, and usc (some combination of those two teams, but not bama and florida obviously) going at it in the national championship.

i think we have to pray for
a penn state loss to iowa or michigan state (or both)
florida and bama to win out
tech to lose to OU and OSU
we beat mizzou in big 12 championship

and then we would either play bama or florida. depending on the winner of the SEC championship game. that’s just my best guess though.

Colt Deserves the Heismann Trophy and Texas isn't out yet! Keep your Horns Up!

Even with being bashed around and having his receivers drop a lot of balls, McCoy engineered a comeback that would be the envy of many college quarterbacks. Now we have to hope the Okies beat Tech and Okie State. That would again put us in the drivers seat if we win the rest of our games. As to the game, I was very disappointed in the officials and their lack of holding calls on Tech’s defense. I saw many outright tackles that were ignored by the referees. I thought the kicking game was great and kept the offense in the game. Unfortunately, kick coverage was again lacking.

The Tech fans lived down to my lowest expectations as they always do. What can you expect from a bunch of two-bit redneck peckerwoods? Rushing the field three times showed real West Texas class, boy! They’re so dumb, they don’t know the game isn’t over until the clock shows zero.

At least the pressure is off of us. The horns played so nervous for most of the game so I think this will be a bit of a breather for our guys. Great Game

I am a Tech fan and so proud for the team. I was at the game and still say Texas is a great team. I did enjoy talking with Texas fans during the game. It was a great game that all I can say.
