Get on the Bus!
Okay,
I have slept it off, went to church (really struggled to focus but at least I'm honest), wife said everythings gonna be alright, and my 15 month old son is beating his cold which means its time for this Marine and the rest of us BONers to don our "Go Oklahoma (sucks)" hats and t-shirts and get down to business.
Point #1 There is still a lot of football left to play by a lot of different teams. If last year was any indication than the month of November will usher in change ( and not just for the presidency) than hold on for a very bumpy ride. Turkey anyone?
Point #2 We are not out of anything! You better believe that. My HS football coach once said as we were about to get on the bus to play Converse Judson, "If you don't think we can beat these guys than don't get on the bus"! Get out of my way 54b and PB...I'm getting on this bus first!
Point #3 We could easily finish the year 11-1 and in the Big XII Championship with a berth in the BCS Championship waiting for us.
So here I go, feet first... if you're game, come along with me. The water is warm and very clear.
Let's take a look at the who is in front of us in the polls and what I expect to happen. Call me crazy but I do consider myself a borderline addict of college football and not just because of my beloved Horns. I am going to go with worse case scenario here which in this case is the USA Today Nazi poll. (I am pretty sure that the BCS is gonna show our Body of work some respect but we shall see tomorrow). The AP, who I have always trusted more just because they are pretty good at doing this since they have been at it since 1861 A.D., seems to get it right. I'm not sure why the Coaches poll put us so low at #7 but it is what it is. So, in order:
Alabama Still has to play(in order): @LSU, Missisippi State, and Auburn I see the Crimson Tide losing at LSU. They will blast the Bulldogs and the Tigers/War Eagles and they WILL be the SEC West Champion. How do the Longhorns benefit? A loss in November for the Tide drops them a heck of a lot lower than it did us. As we get further into November this is gonna be the case for anyone as you all already know. If they lose at LSU on Saturday, as I predict, they are out of the top 9, the best they can hope for is #10 even in a close loss and assuming they win their last two, which I think they will even with a rival game like Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Mark my words on this. Alabama just hasn't done it for a lot of people and they have been suspect. Even if they win out my money is on them getting BLASTED by a very good Florida team in Atlanta for the SEC Championship.
Penn State Still has to play(in order): @Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan State. I see the Nittany Lions losing one more maybe 2 but I'm not sure where the second one is. At Iowa is a strong possibility but I don't quite see it yet. If they can go into the Horseshoe and win; they can win there. They will paste Indiana but they WILL lose when the host Sparty and Happy Valley will be shocked. You guys want to see a CRY PICTURE, watch that game and you will see plenty! PB, lets put some money on that one. How do the Longhorns benefit? A Penn State loss anywhere means they are out and they fall way past us...PERIOD. The Big 10 is more like the Little 10 this season but they could win out in which case that hurts us big time! This is one of the most important of all these scenarios and teams...WE NEED PENN STATE TO LOSE A GAME!
Texas Tech Still has to play(in order): Oklahoma State, @Oklahoma, and Baylor. I honestly see a 70-30 chance of Tech losing to the Pokes at home next weekend and then, even though they get a bye week, they WILL lose to Oklahoma in Norman. They will blast Baylor but Tech loses at least 1 more. How do the Longhorns benefit? This one is the most talked about simply because our loss is so fresh but it also has the most of our investment. #1, we need Tech to lose twice, which they very could well do which puts us into Kansas City against (most likely) Mizzou. But even if they just lose at Oklahoma, they drop outside the top 5. That game is in 3 weeks. Im not on drugs! They lose to Oklahoma (who still sucks) and they are outside the top 5 maybe even the top seven. Who wants to bet me on that statement? #2, Yes, that would mean they go to KC instead of us but a one loss Tech means they are out of it. They could lose 1 more, go to KC and win the Big XII but not go to the BCS title game. I honestly feel this is a likely scenario if some other things dont play out. They are just starting their gauntlet.
Oklahoma Still has to play(in order): @Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and @Oklahoma State. Oklahoma (sucks) wins against A&M easily, beats Tech, but loses to the Pokes. How do the Longhorns benefit? The Big XII South canablizes itself as expected. The SEC East has been doing this for a while now and its our turn at feasting on each other. I think, even if Oklahoma wins out thats still good for us granted we get to KC. It weighs heavily on the BCS in our favor if they win out. A win against OKST doesn't hurt us nearly as bad vice them not beating Tech. They have to beat Tech! I will say it only once, "Go Sooners". I cant' believe I just wrote that. I feel so cheap and dirty! someone hold me.....sob
Florida Still has to play(in order): @Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Citadel (Go Bulldogs) and @Florida State. Florda blasts everybody and wins the SEC Championship and gets a berth in the BCS game in Miami. They are very good gang as you all have seen for yourself. When they lost to Ole Miss at home I was shocked but I said to the Mrs ("if they dont lose again they go to Miami"). I said it then and I say it now. They win out and they are in. How do the Longhorns benefit? This is who we play for the title! A loss helps, of course because it elimnates them completely but my money says Florida is in the title game. They will beat whoever the West sends to Atlanta. PB? How much cash baby? How much?
USC Still has to play(in order): California, @Stanford, Notre Dame, and @UCLA. They win out hands down. This is my wild card. They aggravate me more than anyone else today. The one thing we have going for us is that they play in the Soft 10 (Pac 10). If they lose they are out of it but that's a BIG IF!!! How do the Longhorns benefit? I'm not real sure. I dont see them winning out as affecting us to bad to begin with simply because their SOS (strength of schedule) is so darn weak! if they win out they are ahead of us in the coaches poll but not the AP which doesnt count for anything in the BCS which is a felony but the BCS does have us ahead of them anyway. I will gladly take a USC loss just to remove them from the room!
SubTotal: We need the OkSt, OU, Tech 3-way shootout to continue in this order: OkSt beats Tech. Tech loses to OU (sucks). OU loses to OKSt. That is what we need the most. Folks, the above scenario has potential for happening just like that. Thats not subjectivity or myopia talking...thats objectivity. If, OU wins out, that still puts us in a good spot with the BCS but not the polls. So, forget the polls. I would however feel safer (BCS Poll) with an OU loss ONLY to OKST.
TOTAL: I know, this could only be written by a Longhorn fan, right? You're right! This is what we need to happen...Hands Down. It very well could. If Tech, Penn State and Alabama lose at any point during the rest of the regular season not only does that help us towards getting to the Big XII Championship we are also back in it for the National Championship!
The Marine predicts: Florida vs. Texas for the BCS National Championship. (we wear white and Florida wears Blue Jersey's with blue Trousers).
Call me Crazy but last year was CRAZY!!! App State beats Michigan in Ann Arbor...Colorado beats OU/KState beats Texas on the same day....Stanford beats USC....South Florida gets as high as #2 and South Carolina gets as high as #6...# 2 West Virgina loses with a berth in the title game waiting for them...come on man, that Crazy!

How can you disagree...
When the guy even predicts the colors worn against the Gators in Miami? Great post, and a much needed reminder that this thing ain’t over. Semper Fi, sir.

What the ***k happened to the Horns I used to know? Where’s the spirit? Where’s the guts, huh? This could be the greatest season of our lives, but you’re going to let it be the worst…“Ooh, we’re afraid to go with you, 98horn, we might get in trouble.” Well just kiss my ass from now on!

Sir, you can't beat me to the bus...
because I never got off the bus. Remember, I subscribe to the “if it’s meant to be, it’ll be” philosophy, so I can’t hurt emotionally anymore…I can’t be trusted to operate large machinery right now either, but whatever, details.
Here’s how I see going down…
Alabama loses this weekend, but regroups to win the SEC.
Penn State doesn’t lose again, but gets trumped because their SOS sucks.
Tech beats OSU, but loses to OU.
OU loses to OSU sending Tech to KC by virtue of our head to head loss to them, but Tech loses to Mizzou.
Thanks to our incredible SOS and win over Mizzou who is now the Big XII Champion in a year when they would have been the 5th best team in the Big XII South (oh, sweet, sweet irony), Texas gets vaulted past Penn State to play Bama in Miami.
Honestly though, I’m just thinking about Baylor. All of this means absolutely nothing if we drop another game. And no I don’t think we’re going to lose to the Bears, but we’ll have a game on our hands up in KU, especially if we’re still nursing a bunch of injuries on D.
Good times.

If you had told me that
we’d be 9-1 at his point, I would have said the 1 loss better be to someone other than ou. I never get off the bus but I do change seats periodically. Great post SC… Lets just "Win Out " and see what happens. Oh, I had no idea Malcom Williams had that kind of spend………Damn

Texas to Miami
How can Texas make it to Miami without being the conference champ? I thought this ended with the Nebraska representing in the national Title and did not even play in the conf championchip and again with Oklahoma losing the champ game to K state… I thought you had to be your conf champ to play in the MNC….

As far as I know
Conference champ has nothing to do with it, just have to be BCS #1 and #2. Thats harder to do if you arent the conference champ, but not impossible. Just need everyone elses houses of cards to fall in the right order for us.

You are correct
BCS rules don’t have a conference champion mandate. Though it is unlikely to happen again because the USA Today and Harris voters will make sure of that not happening again. It probably should be a rule, though. Seems a bit goofy to have a team that didn’t win its conference playing for a national title.

I would not be that absolute
While I agree it is unlikely because the votes might try to punish a team for not being a conference champion, I don’t think it is impossible. If every other conference champ had two losses and an undefeated Big 12 or SEC team loses a letdown game in the championship game to leave them as the only 1 loss team, it would be tough to leave them out.

Number 2 after this weekend? I have a funny feeling that says that Alabama loses this weekend in Baton Rouge and I think Dez Bryant and company tear it up against Tech. Any thoughts?

SEC Game of the week
BONers,
the SEC G.O.W. is without a doubt, Alabama at LSU. There are som many folks across the nation that want to see a not so welcome return for Mr Saban to LSU. Also, the national implications in this one if alabama were to lose. Penn State fans are praying for this one! My only concern is that kickoff is at 330pm not after sundown. LSU DOES NOT….I repeat DOES NOT lose at night! However, they really don’t lose at home either no matter the time played. This one means too much to Les Miles. I say 70-30 that LSU pulls off the upset. This is the only realistic chance that I see Alabama losing before going to Atlanta and getting trounced by the Gators. We need ’Bama to lose this one.
OSU beating Tech is much more complex. The Red Raiders can play defense! (caveat) up front. I would exploit their linebackers and secondary and OSU, in my mind has one hell of an O line to give Zac time to do what he needs to do. Also, let me point out one thing here. Yes, I want Tech to lose because we benefit but its important that I get that out of the way 1st so that you can see the rest of this as objectivity. Tech knew we didn’t have arunning game effective enough to keep them honest. I am very grateful for the FOZ stepping up as the game went on but I am being honest. They forced Colt to try and beat them and he almost did just that. Their defensive line beat our O Line…there is noy way anyone can say otherwise. What OSU can do better than we have been able to at this point is consistently run with confidence and effectiveness. Mr Hunter can flat out tote the rock and he is great in space. Get him in a phone booth and he will run you over. Thet will be the difference in the game I predict. It is absolutely possible that he can have over 100 yards by halftime and if so Tech better watch out. OSU also has more than just Hunter. keep that in mind. Tech did a very good job with the rotation of fresh legs on the D Line but they played the pass. They will have to play more "6-7 in the box’ this weekend than they did against us. They cannot stop the run with 4 guys…PERIOD! If I can see this boys and girls dont think for a second that Coach gundy can’t. He can coach offense and will run a whole of play action this weekend. If OSU can stop that bubble screen they will match up nicely. 60-40 prediction that OSU pulls off the upset. Semper Fi

Poor Bears
The only people in the country that shouldn’t want to get on any bus this week are the baylor bears. Mack rarely loses two games in a row (though it has happened recently), and the Horns wil be ready to get a back in the win column to continue their run to Miami. Texas 63 Baylor 10. Get ready for a baylor bears beatdown in Austin!

Penn State's remaining schedule:
IOWA
The Hawkeyes have a stud in the backfield with Shonn Greene. That said, their offense has been completely one-dimensional since Drew Tate graduated. They also haven’t faced a defense as good as Penn State’s yet, and their starting QB, Stanzi (sounds like a secret police organization) has already been sacked 15 times and thrown 6 interceptions compared to just 9 touchdowns. They’re just too easy to defend when you load up the box. On defense they’re actually pretty solid, but again, Penn State may be the best offense in the conference right now. Let’s hope that Iowa can hold onto the ball and just run the clock. It’s also at Iowa, which helps a lot. I also believe there’s an intangible of the kids trying to help Kirk Ferrentz, who is on the hot seat. This game probably has the best odds of Penn State stumbling.
INDIANA
Indiana has won three games this year…Western Kentucky, Murray State, and an upset of Northwestern (which was battling injuries that week). There’s no way the Hoosiers don’t get embarrassed in Happy Valley. Their latest loss was to Central Michigan, whose QB, Dan LeFevour, is the team’s leader in rushing because of their spread. Imagine what Penn State’s talent will do with that scheme. No hope for the Nittany Lions to drop this game.
MICHIGAN STATE
I just ducked into my closet here at work and lit some candles under my shrine to Javon Ringer. If Sparty wants to pull the upset in Happy Valley he’s going to have to have the best day of his already great season and let them control the clock. Their QB, Brian Hoyer, is slumping and hasn’t had to win a game on his arm yet. With 4 interceptions and 9 touchdowns so far, let’s hope eliminating Penn State from Miami doesn’t come down to him on the last play. (I know, I know, you’re going to mention Michigan…don’t. Their D was abysmal in that game). On the other side of the ball, Michigan State has a good pass defense because of their star safety and pass rush, but they still give up a healthy amount of yards on the ground. (Which doesn’t bode well since Jo Pa’s team has the number 11 rush offense in the country and they haven’t faced anyone of this caliber yet). Overall, I think Sparty would need the momentum of Iowa beating Penn State (because that means by winning this game they take the conference), a special teams touchdown, and a turnover to win this game…all while having Ringer turn in a Superman performance. Those stars might just not align. It’s a lot to ask.
Anyway, more than anything, WE need to win out!
HOOK ’EM!
