Top 10 player rankings revisited
Back in June, PB put out his list of top 10 players on this year's squad. Here's a recap of what it was as well as stats so far:
10. Tie - Sergio Kindle/John Chiles - Kindle's Stats - 30 tackles, 7 tfl, 6 sacks, 4 hurries
9. Vondrell McGee - 270 yards, 2 tds, 49 yards receiving
8. Colt McCoy - 2285 yards, 21 tds, 4 ints, 412 yards rushing, 7 rushing TDs
7. Roy Miller - 27 tackles, 4 tfl, 2 hurries
6. Quan Cosby - 56 rec, 688 yards, 4 tds
5. Roddrick Muckelroy - 80 tackles, 2.5 ftl, 1 fumble return for TD, 3 pass breakups
4. Ryan Bailey - 5 PATs
3. Deon Beasley - 19 tackles, 1 pass breakup
2. Brian Orakpo - 30 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 2 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles, 11 hurries
1. Lamarr Houston - 18 tackles, 1 sack, 3 pass breakups, 5 hurries
After nine weeks of the season, the cream has risen to the top. While I don't believe in bashing anyone for their performances thus far, its surprising to see how some of our "sure bets" have turned out. Additionally, I think that taking another look at this ranking at the 3/4 mark of the season should drive home the notion of how close the Horns are to putting together an amazing string of seasons over the next few years. Here's my top 10 as it stands now:
10. Chris Ogbonnaya - 323 yards rushing, 3 rushing TDs, 35 rec, 432 yards receiving, 3 rec TDs,
9. Quan Cosby - 56 rec, 688 yards, 4 tds, several huge blocks
8. Earl Thomas - 46 tackles, 7 pass breakups, 1 hurry, 2 INTs, 3 forced fumbles, 1 blocked punt/FG,
7. Roy Miller - 27 tackles, 4 tfl, 2 hurries
6. Chykie Brown - 22 tackles, 2 tfl, 1 sack, 5 pass breakups,
5. Sergio Kindle - 30 tackles, 7 tfl, 6 sacks, 4 hurries
4. Roddrick Muckelroy - 80 tackles, 2.5 ftl, 1 fumble return for TD, 3 pass breakups
3. Jordan Shipley - 64 recs, 779 yards, 10 TDs, 1 Punt return for TD, 1 KO return for TD
2. Brian Orakpo - 30 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 2 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles, 11 hurries
1. Colt McCoy - 2285 yards, 21 tds, 4 ints, 412 yards rushing, 7 rushing TDs
There have been some surprises (Shipley, Chykie), some dissapointments (Deion Beasley), and some questions - like what to make of Lamarr Houston's move to DT. It's also worth noting that there have been some stellar performances from some not in this list - Malcolm Williams, Curtis Brown, Blake Gideon. With only 4 seniors on this list, the future is bright.

accidentally pushed enter. but anyways, back to my post… Earl Thomas has played fairly well, but I think that I would take Gideon over thomas. Besides the play last night, he has been a hard hitting, covering machine (ok, he needs to work a bit on the covering), and he is only a true freshman… I think he is turning out to be one of my favorite players.

really think he’s hard hitting? i dunno, my assessment is that he’s always in the right place, at the right time, and makes the tackle. however, he doesn’t seem to have that bone crushing pop you want to see when a safety hits a guy. however, he wraps up, takes out the legs, and/or slows down a guy enough to get some gang tackling in.
whether that is because muschamp wants him to make the stop rather than being over anxious to hurt people…. or for whatever reason… i’m ecstatic with the way he’s playing and the player he could potentially be.

anyone disappointed in Ulatowski?
he has been playing pretty poorly in past couple of games…this man is 6’8’’ monster who is THE LT of a team that has a right handed QB…sometimes his pass blocking technique is plainly awful….I thought he was going to a be the next great OL coming out of UT…
I lost it when tech was rushing 3!!! and still got to colt (maybe they had one delay blitz but still…)

i felt the OL let the team down big time in the first half.
colt had no time to throw and they got no push for the run game which resulted in that safety, although i will admit the play calling was awful on that play.

Glad you dug this up
I’d totally forgotten this list, actually, and I’d rather forget some of the selections—Beasley at #3? Man, he’s disappointed in the worst way. Hunter Lawrence has been automatic, good enough to slide in for Ryan Bailey even. Roy Miller goes near the top of the list; Lamarr has been solid but slides down. Shipley’s break out is, as you note, a pleasant surprise. And there’s a surge of young talent on or near-to-join this list. My Top 10 in value (not just pure talent) as of today:
1. Colt McCoy
2. Brian Orakpo
3. Roy Miller
4. Jordan Shipley
5. Quan Cosby
6. Roddrick Muckelroy
7. Sergio Kindle
8. Chykie Brown
9. Lamarr Houston
10. Blake Gideon/Curtis Brown/Aaron Williams/Earl Thomas (Imagine the 2009 and ’10 Texas secondaries. Wow.)

no love for ogbannaya? while he still frustrates me to no end, he’s been breaking off a few big runs here and there.
personally i’ve been loving cody johnson, his ability to pound the ball north-south with frequency, and his ability to somehow get to the edge and still punch the ball up a few yards at his size impresses me. he doesn’t get enough carries in my opinion (i’d love to see at least half the 4th and 1’s that ogbannaya gets go to CJ), and several times has had perfect body control to get the touchdown when he shouldn’t have (i’m thinking of the stretch play to the right from like the 2 yd line, he pushed forward and got the TD with 3 defenders in his face. another time where he took the ball left from inside the 5, was stopped just short, but just as his body/knee were about to hit extended his arm just enough to break the plane and get the TD on the review).

Value-wise
Roy Miller as the sole legit DT is probably on plane with Colt in terms of value because they are both completely irreplaceable on this team.
I have to give the nod to Shipley at #3, because he’s not just a receiver. Along with leading the team in every receiving category he also has had 2 game-changing special teams plays.
Ranking my #4 – #7 (Muck, Kindle, Brown, Miller) is almost a toss-up and you can make many good arguments for why any of these guys belongs at #4.
I agree, the secondary should be sick over the next couple of years. Hopefully guys like Ben Wells and Christian Scott develop, and then you add prospects like Marcus Davis, Eryon Barnett, and Kenny Vaccaro over the next few years. The 4 players you listed at #10, plus Chykie Brown is a heck of nickle package.

Good point on Shipley special teams contributions
I’m comfortable with moving him up a place (or two?) on that.
Good thread, BMG.

If you’re a Texas fan, here’s the good news on the injury situation for Longhorn stars Brian Orakpo and Quan Cosby.
Neither has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Baylor.
Orakpo, the defensive end, sprained his left knee against Texas Tech. Cosby, the team’s second-leading receiver, was having problems with his back.
Orakpo was checked Saturday night and Sunday.
Here’s the statement issued Sunday night by athletic trainer Kenny Boyd: “Brian Orakpo (sprained left knee) and Quan Cosby (back) will be evaluated during the week. Depending how the week goes for them, we will have an update on their game availability on Friday.”

All I know
is that he hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday’s game.

The Williams'
Aaron and Malcolm are my players to watch for the rest of the season. Both were great on special teams last night and they seemed like they were fired up to play. I want to see that in our players…especially our young guys.
Kindle was my player to watch at the beginning of the season and he is doing just fine. I’m actually fearful that he might leave early and go to the NFL. He is that much of a freak that his combine numbers could give him a good grade and great paycheck.
I really hope Malcolm starts from now on. He just looks so good out there. His size and strength are what this team needs! He’s our vertical threat and we need to use him.
Aaron williams is a stud. Put him in the starting secondary RIGHT NOW!

Kindle
I haven’t seen any draft prognosticators giving Kindle much attention at all. The general consensus is that his potential is off the charts, but his talent is just too raw still. My guess is that he’d likely be no better than a 4th or 5th rounder this year, but another year at Texas could vault him to 1st or 2nd round next year.

Here's one mock draft that has him in the first round:

I know it’s only one mock draft..but scouts out there are well aware of his talents and potential.
