The Case for Rooting for Okie State

I think a case can now be made for me to root for Okie State next week, and the upside is I don't have to root for ou again (I just threw up a little in my mouth).

My greatest non-Longhorn rooting will of course be for Baylor, come on Mr. Griffin channel the real #10.

I think, though, that if that doesn't work out we would be better off if Okie State won next week.  Tech was destroyed enough tonight nationally in prime time that I don't think they will be able to catch us in the BCS even if they win the Big 12 by backing into the championship game (plus they may lose to Mizzou).  They just got their hats handed to them, and their asses were in them, in front of EVERYONE.  Noone is going to want to see them play Florida in Florida after tonight.

The second loss knocks ou out and Tech stays behind us even if they beat Mizzou.  We back in to the championship by beating the crap out of the ags in front of everyone and then resting, ala a Big 10 or Pac 10 team.

Root for Baylor...

…because if they pull off the incredible upset, then we’re in the B12 champ. game for sure, BCS standings be damned.

But if OK State beats OU and hands them a second loss, then it’s just Tech and us tied for first place— and they’ll get the nod over us because of the head-to-head win, and BCS standings will not matter.

If we trust the computers and the pollsters to remember 45-35 and our Cannonball Run thru four top 11 teams, then we NEED OU to beat OK State so we can end up in a 3 way tie, which is the only time BCS standings come into play…

I think the author's point was that

you need OU to lose to OSU to get into the National Championship. I think this argument is premised on: Odds of Tech losing to Missouri > Odds of Texas being ahead of OU in the BCS polls if they beat Oklahoma State + Odds of OU beating Missouri given they beat Oklahoma State and remain ahead of Texas in the BCS rankings.

I think that’s a plausible argument.

Er...

I am mixed up. The author’s point is that the way Tech damaged itself, even if we BEAT Missouri (given an OU loss to OSU) Texas would go to the National Championship.

That likewise seems plausible.

Not so fast my friend....

If OU loses to OSU, then Tech goes to Kansas City by virtue of having the head to head victory over us – assuming that Tech beats Baylor. LIke HoMC said, if you want to win the Big 12, you need to end up in a 3 way tie with Tech and OU.

If you don’t care about the Big 12 and just want to get to Miami, then who cares what happens to anyone else the rest of the way out. Just hope that we are ahead in the BCS standings.

That is the whole point of this post...

What he is saying is that this is the most reasonable (Baylor winning, probably not as reasonable) outcome to put us as the top ranked Big 12 team in the last BCS standings.

Guess that I missed the point

A conference championship trophy still means something to me, especially since it would only be Mack’s second one.

Agree Okie State is our best hope

Based on the coaches poll reaction to OU’s beatdown of Tech last night.
It is entirely possible, if unfair, that if Baylor upsets Tech and we beat Mizzou again, we will be off to the Fiesta Bowl while the land thieves go to Miami to play for all the marbles.

If Okie State can’t pull it off, our only remaining hope is for Mizzou to somehow beat OU. I don’t think that is likely, but at least we can dream.

So what you're saying...

is that Texas can win the Big 12 CG and OU still would be in Miami for the MNC. That goes against what most voters would do. There is something about being a conference champ that should be rewarded, especially if Texas is 12-1.

by HornsFaninCalifornia on Nov 23, 2008 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I agree.

It is unreasonable to say that Texas would not go to Miami if they go and win in Kansas City. The boner the computers would have for Texas assuming an 11-1 Oklahoma and two wins over Missouri would be so long that it would come through my computer and stab me through the eyeball.

Go register. Or else.

I agree that it would be unreasonable

I just don’t think it isn’t possible. There’s lots of unreasonable stuff going on here. Letting the pollsters decide the Big 12 South champ is unreasonable. If OU dominates in Stillwater, and we don’t play well enough against the Aggies to get lots of love, OU could be ahead of us in the BCS by too much for another win over Mizzou to help. Not saying they definitely would be, but just saying it’s possible.

I agree completely.

Tech is going to be too far back in the BCS to overtake Texas even with a Big 12 championship. So if OU loses to OSU or to Missouri in the Big 12 championship game, Texas will go to Miami. Likewise, if Tech loses to Baylor, Texas will go to Miami if we beat Missouri in the Big 12 championship game. And finally, Texas still has a very slim chance of being ahead of OU in the BCS at the end of the regular season even if OU beats OSU, and will go to Miami if they then beat Missouri.

This is why I was rooting for OU to beat Tech. There are a ton of options for Texas at this point. None of them are extremely likely, but there are a lot of them.
